MIKE COOPER Eastern Standard Time 609-654-7272 & JONATHAN WRIGHT 609-654-6852 (FAX) THE HARD REPORT 3 JANUARY 10, 1992 ToPriori Psychefunkapus, "Surfin On Jupiter", Atlantic... "Funk rock" may be the rep on this Bay Area band, but "Surfm" is about as suburban as you can get --that is, if a time machine took you back to '63. Many have tried to recreate Cv7-3,7'.431.749those surf sounds of that golden era just before the Beatles changed all the rules, but most succeed only :0 I in sounding dopey --or at best, saccharine. This, on the other hand, is actually too hip. Surfmg in January? On Jupiter? Hey, no nuttier than anything else going on in the world. Producer Jerry Harrison pays proper homage to the Chantays, and thanks to Dick Dale's rad twanging and the band's killer Orange County crooning, this is the best new instant reaction record on the radio. It's old, it's new, there's legitimate alternative, metal and AOR appeal, and all kitch aside, ain't no way this perfectly timed period piece won't wind up as the first quarter's fastest starting multi- format darling. Already a big hit on our call -in rate -a -record research system --and believe me, after a week on Hard Hold, we know when we've got a winner. Record AFE Week War Babies, "Hang Me Up", Columbia... Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have established Seattleas THE hotbed of commercial cutting edge rock, so weren't we surprised to find that Columbia's number one priority sounds like they're straight outta somewhere considerably further south, one with lots of smog and people pissed off about helmet laws. But that's not to say they're not Jet City favorites, as noted by KXRX's Dean Carlson, and "The Seattle story continues; riffs, growls, and plenty of crunch. How ironic. Another war on January 15th, only this one rocks." They're already doing well in Denver, where KAZY played two tracks from the advance tape, had the band in for a New Year's Eve show and now report Top 10 calls. "92's Black Crowes to be" was the prediction from MD Lois Todd. A little TSL with the album will tell you these Babies have that critical grit/gloss ratio down pat. And between Paul Stanley's co -writer credits and the label's commitment, you know the War Babies aren't kidding the first time out. OTB at KUPD and KRXQ. Hard Acts John Lee Hooker, "Strip Me Naked", Charisma... As you probably know, Carlos Santana is just one of many luminaries who wanted to pay tribute to John Lee on this album, and his inclusion on this tune would seem reason enough for healthy exposure. Then again, there's the fact that just last week John Lee was Grammy nominated in the traditional blues category, with fellow labelmates Johnny Winter and Albert Collins (also on the album) both nominated for contemporary blues. KRQR's Larry Snider has further encouragement, "Back when I was in Tucson, I threw this song on at about nine in the morning, and the phones started ringing right away. We featured it for three weeks with great response, so I know it would work here. Once we had a chance to play it, my hunch was backed up. Great phones, good sales, here we go!" Also note the early adds from KLOS and KZAP. Northern Pikes, "Dream Away", Scotti Brothers.. In the midst of all the wheeling and dealing that characterized Promotion '91, the job John Schoenberger and Co. did stands out as one of the two or three most successful and legitimate long term projects. Week after week they convinced skeptical programmers as the record that wouldn't die inched and clawed its way along for 22 weeks on the chart. Nearly half a year on the AOR charts and still a story at CHR. Now even MTV is hip to the song, and it's time for AOR to take that big second step, as well we should. Ed Stasium's energized remix really juices the trademark harmonies, so much so that 0107 readded a song they've already played for over six months. As Joey Vendetta said, "The song displays great pop sensibilities without compromising what makes rock and roll great --the attitude. Perfect 18-34." Debut at 91*, with KBCO, KISW, KSJO, KUPD, KBOY, KWHL and ten more just in. Marc Cohn, "29 Ways". Atlantic... While on the subject, howzabout Mr. Marc snagging three Grammy Nominations? No one around here can remember the last time a new act was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Vocal Performance and Best Song? When we asked around at year's end, our segment of the radio and record community definitely seconded the emotion that he was the best new male, if only because rock radio put 'em on the map.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Name a game-changing media moment during the last 35 years, and chances are Bob Pittman’s fingerprints were all over it. CONTEMPORARY ANIMATION: THE SIMPSONS TO SOUTH PARK-FILM 4165 (4 Credits) SPRING 2015 Tuesdays 6:00 P.M.-10:00 P.M. Social Work 134 Instructor: Steven Pecchia-Bekkum Office Phone: 801-935-9143 E-Mail: [email protected] Office Hours: M-W 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. (FMAB 107C) Course Description: Since it first appeared as a series of short animations on the Tracy Ullman Show (1987), The Simpsons has served as a running commentary on the lives and attitudes of the American people. Its subject matter has touched upon the fabric of American society regarding politics, religion, ethnic identity, disability, sexuality and gender-based issues. Also, this innovative program has delved into the realm of the personal; issues of family, employment, addiction, and death are familiar material found in the program’s narrative. Additionally, The Simpsons has spawned a series of animated programs (South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, Rick and Morty etc.) that have also been instrumental in this reflective look on the world in which we live. The abstraction of animation provides a safe emotional distance from these difficult topics and affords these programs a venue to reflect the true nature of modern American society. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to provide the intellectual basis for a deeper understanding of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, and Rick and Morty within the context of the culture that nurtured these animations. The student will, upon successful completion of this course: (1) recognize cultural references within these animations. (2) correlate narratives to the issues about society that are raised.
