Leicester City Football Club- The Fairytale Story

Sport has provided us with so many remarkable stories over the years. The greatest sporting moments of all time have been so wildly astounding that no one could even begin to predict their existence before they occur right in front of our eyes. Steven Bradbury sliding nonchalantly past six men sprawling on the ice to claim gold, Germany’s incredible drubbing of Brazil in front of their own fans at the 2014 world cup, the miracle on ice at the 1980 olympics, there are too many of these stories that bring shivers up our spines to list off. Something is becoming ever more apparent as time ticks on, and it’s that City Football Club’s 2015/16 season could be the biggest story of the lot.

Lets wind back to this time last year. Leicester stood dead last on the table, staring down the barrel of what seemed to be an imminent relegation to the Championship. The Foxes rallied, however, and lead by their talisman ’s goals, they grasped survival on the final day of the season. This run of form to finish the season was clearly a sign of things to come, but no one in their right mind would have suggested that Leicester would finish in the Premier League’s top ten this season, let alone be seven points clear at the top with only six matches remaining. In saying that, a Leicester fan just cashed out 72,000 from a 50 pound bet on his beloved team to win the title that was set to win 250,000 pounds. He puts the bet on his side to win the league every year, but he has admitted that usually it is for the Championship, and not the Premier League. I suppose loyalty can pay off after all, gives us Demons fans some hope!

The true beauty of Leicester’s rise to prominence is that it is a win for football. Ranieri’s troops come to a total cost of a mere 54.4 million pounds, with their best player warming the bench this season at a cost of 10 million. To put this into perspective, Manchester City’s squad totals 418.8 million pounds, Arsenal’s players have set their club back 251.9 million and Spurs, Leicester’s main competitors for the title, cost 161.1 million. Manchester City’s summer signing costed the same as Leicester’s entire team. Leicester have proven to us all that there is no substitute for dedication, teamwork and unity. Despite being paired against these costly superstars, Leicester have risen to the top. They are a champion team, and not necessarily a team of champions. Well, before the Leicester fans stop reading due to that last statement, Jamie Vardy’s 19 goals and ’s absolutely world class performances have been pretty spectacular from an individual sense. Leicester’s box to box midfielder N’Golo Kante has come from the 7th division of French football to dominate Premier League matches with his thirst for the contest. 71% of the planet is covered by water, the remaining 29% is said to be covered by N’Golo Kante.

It seems that the whole world wants Leicester to claim the title. They are the feel good story that comes around once in a lifetime, so let’s just sit back and appreciate it. Title or no title, Leicester have encapsulated why we love sport. Go on then, Foxes.
