  • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ Christian Arroyo: next piece of homegrown infield? John Shea SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants love shortstops. Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering. He’s plenty smart enough to realize his ticket to the big leagues might not be at his No.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 28, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 28, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ lineup takes shape on 14-run afternoon Henry Schulman SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the final Cactus League home game Monday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy constructed a fair preview for Opening Day. Brandon Belt batted second behind Denard Span, with Hunter Pence, Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford at three, four and five. Aaron Hill batted sixth as a place-holder for Eduardo Nuñez, and Joe Panik was seventh, which was fine with him. “I’ve got some protection behind me,” he said with a smile. That was Madison Bumgarner, who batted eighth, ahead of Gorkys Hernandez hitting ninth in the Jarrett Parker spot. That group had a field day in a 14-2 victory over the Reds. The Giants pinned 10 runs on left-handed starter Cody Reed, who had been having a nice spring. Bochy has not had a chance to tinker with batting orders because Posey and Crawford were at the World Baseball Classic for more than two weeks. Bochy is experimenting now, with Sunday’s season opener quickly approaching. “You look at the two guys at the top of the order: They’re on-base guys. The numbers show that,” Bochy said. “You’ve got experienced guys in the heart of the order with Pence, Buster and Craw. Look at what Craw is doing. You want him in that spot. “Going down the order, you’ve got power there with Parker versus right-handers. Panik’s another good hitter. Some days, you’ll see the pitcher hitting eighth.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Saturday, July 15, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Saturday, July 15, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle A’s Alonso, Giants’ Posey opine on game’s record pace for homers, strikeouts John Shea If there was any doubt the emphasis in baseball is on home runs and strikeouts, records will be set on both fronts when the 2017 season ends. The homers record of 5,693 set in 2000, a loosey-goosey time of steroid use, will fall — we’re on pace for 6,126. And strikeout records are being set every year — we’re at an all-time high of 16.489 K’s per nine innings. In related news, the average time of nine-inning games is longest in history: 3 hours, 5 minutes. Homers and K’s are time-consuming, after all. Commissioner Rob Manfred addressed all three areas during the All-Star break in a Q&A with the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and defended baseball’s drug-testing policy, his way of suggesting PEDs aren’t the reason for overpowering pitchers and batters. Here’s a player’s view: “The game has changed,” A’s All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso said. “The pitcher is going for the strikeout just like the hitter is going for the homer. It’s evolved into a heavyweight game, 1 the one-punch knockout. “It’s not so much the featherweight game where you’re going to jab, you’re going to make sure you get the runner over. “No, the game has changed. You’re expecting to win games by hitting a two-run homer or hitting a couple of two-run homers.

SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 14, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Buster Posey’s absence means more work for Giants’ backups John Shea SURPRISE, Ariz. — Life without Buster Posey continues for the Giants’ pitchers. It could be a while before they get their All-Star catcher back. “Hopefully,” Jeff Samardzija said. Not that Samardzija doesn’t like having Posey around. He’s just rooting for Posey and shortstop Brandon Crawford to play deep into the World Baseball Classic. The Americans advanced past the first round, meaning Posey and Crawford will continue suiting up for the United States at least through Saturday. Meantime, backup catcher Nick Hundley is getting extra work with the pitching staff, probably a good thing for the newcomer who signed a one-year deal in January. On Monday night, he caught Samardzija for the first time. The right-hander worked his pitch count to 76 but gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in 32/3 innings against the Rangers. “It’s always good to work out those kinks,” Samardzija said. “It’s good to have him back there so he can know what I shake (off pitches) to, what we’re on the same page with, getting a better idea of what we throw.” It was Samardzija’s fourth start. He has thrown to Posey twice and Trevor Brown once. His ERA is 9.82. 1 “Overall, it felt good. I was strong until the end,” Samardzija said. “You always care about results. It’s not the defining factor in spring training, but obviously you want to have good days.

SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, April 18, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants Triple-A reliever Kyle Crick sidelined by freak injury Henry Schulman KANSAS CITY — Right-hander Kyle Crick, who was off to a good start in his first Triple-A season, as a reliever, has gone on Sacramento’s disabled list because of a freak injury. Crick was hit in the head by a foul ball Sunday while sitting in the visiting dugout at Cashman Field in Las Vegas and sustained a concussion. Crick, 24, was the Giants’ sandwich-round pick in the 2011 draft. He fell off the prospect board as a starter because he could not harness his wildness. But the organization has stuck with him because of his stuff, including a swing-and-miss fastball. After a good big-league spring training, Crick pitched in three games for Sacramento and had four scoreless innings, no walks, five strikeouts and a save. He did not sustain any other head injuries in the mishap. Morse rehab: Outfielder Michael Morse (hamstring) and right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris (foot) have been assigned to Classs A San Jose on rehab assignments. 1 They were supposed to play Monday night against Visalia, but the game was rained out. The four-games series is expected to begin Tuesday, with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. Both players were injured in spring training. San Jose Mercury News Smashing cars, clubbing homers: Giants love watching Madison Bumgarner at the plate Andrew Baggarly KANSAS CITY – Randy Gomez is the maintenance director at AT&T Park. He parks his Dodge Charger in the private lot just beyond the oversized Coke bottle in left field.
