Some 92% of all U.S. credit card purchase volume is charged on rewards cards according to estimates from the Mercator Advisory Group, Inc, a payments research and consulting firm. The most generous credit card reward programs carry the highest fees. Therefore the high fees paid by merchants on these transactions pay for the rich rewards offered by the issuing banks.
