Great Narratives of the Past. Traditions and Revisions in National Museums Conference proceedings from EuNaMus, European National Museums: Identity Politics, the Uses of the Past and the European Citizen, Paris 29 June – 1 July & 25-26 November 2011. Dominique Poulot, Felicity Bodenstein & José María Lanzarote Guiral (eds) EuNaMus Report No 4. Published by Linköping University Electronic Press: http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp_home/index.en.aspx?issue=078 © The Author. Nordiska museet and Skansen: Displays of Floating Nationalities Magdalena Hillström Department of Culture Studies, Linköping University Abstract This article explores how national narratives were performed and displayed at Nordiska museet and Skansen from late 19th century until the end of the 20th century. It shows how the museum’s national narratives were negotiated and transformed in the wake of new political orientations, from the utopia of “folkhemmet” to contemporary visions of the multi-cultural society. Nordiska museet and Skansen have strongly been associated with successful nation- making. This notion however tends to suppress a prevailing tension between the museum’s Nordicness and its Swedishness. From very early on Artur Hazelius collected objects from an indecisive Nordic area, including Russia and Germany. After his death in 1901 efforts were made to nationalize Nordiska museet and Skansen. From time to time the museum’s Nordic identity has been mobilized, a story that run parallel with tendencies to reject the museum’s Scandinavianist legacy, a legacy dating back to a period when the contemporary Nordic nation- states were yet not politically or culturally defined. 33 Sweden in Miniature In 1890 Artur Hazelius, the founder of Nordiska museet in Stockholm, received as a gift some houses and a garden named Framnäs at Djurgården, close to the building site of the present Nordiska museet.

THE STAGING OF NYNÄS CASTLE From Private Home to Museum Ellionore Schachnow Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University Spring 2020 ABSTRACT Department: The Department of Culture and Aesthetics Address: 106 91 Stockholm, Sweden Supervisor: Sabrina Norlander Eliasson Title and Subtitle: The Staging of Nynäs Castle - From Private Home to Museum Author: Ellionore Schachnow Author’s Contact Information: Midskeppsgatan 1, 120 66, Stockholm, [email protected], 0722502894 Essay Level: Master’s Thesis Ventilation Semester: Spring 2020 The thesis examines the reason behind the overtaking of Nynäs castle by the State Art Museums and how Nationalmuseum choose to stage the period rooms during 1984-2020 and how it relates to contemporary trends within museology. Furthermore, the thesis examines possible similarities in how the National Trust stages their historic houses. The thesis emanates from Emma Barker’s art historical approach to critical studies of the historic buildings owned by the Trust and discusses the possibilities and limitations of the historic house museums in the context of house museology. This thesis also discusses the differences between an ethnographic and an art museum in a historic house context and the function of the period room. The State Art Museum managed to receive funds for the acquisition of Nynäs collections through private donations and funds from the State. The original intention was to stage the interior rooms as it was found, and this approach partly resembles the staging of a house owned by the National Trust. This approach was questioned by Nationalmuseum during 2008 and they initiated a project of re-arranging the rooms which resulted in a chronological display.

  • Carl Kylberg. with Colour Beyond the Surface 18 June – 25 September, 2016
Carl Kylberg. With colour beyond the surface 18 June – 25 September, 2016 Flowing brushwork and vibrant colours distinguish the Swedish artist Carl Kylberg’s (1878-1952) paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes. He combined his artistic practice with a spiritual quest that imbues his oeuvre with an existential dimension. The dissolved shapes in his works were debated in both art and politics. This exhibition shows parts of Kylberg’s entire body of work, from the early paintings and cartoons from the 1910s, the children’s books and more colourful paintings from the 1920s, to his famous classical motifs from the 1930s and 40s. Kylberg’s breakthrough to the wider public came late, but he is counted as a key figure of Swedish art since the 1930s. The exhibition highlights the artist role and puts his paintings in the context of the period before, during and after the Second World War. Ernest Thiel, the founder of The Thiel Gallery, stopped collecting art after selling his collections to the Swedish state in 1924. In 1937, Thiel was asked in an interview in Nya Dagligt Allehanda, one of the national daily papers, what he thought of the latest modern art. Thiel replied that he had recently seen Carl Kylberg’s exhibition at the Royal Academy Of Fine Arts in Stockholm: “It was a revelation. Swedish art is in a promising state of development...” Thiel never bought any works by Kylberg, but there are parallels between the artist’s spirituality and Ernest Thiel’s interest in belief systems and philosophy. Kylberg’s constant self-examination and search for meaning beyond material values still is relevant today.
