CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Literature, most generically, is anybody of written works. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage. According to Klarer (2004:1)

"Literature is referred to as the entirety of written expression, with the restriction that not every written document can be categorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word." From the theory above the example of the document in question is poetry, songs, novels, short stories, prose, etc.

Literary work is the result of human thought. Every human being has his own way of expressing his thoughts / opinions through written or oral media.

Mursal Esten (1978: 9) also state that "Literature is the expression of artistic and imaginative facts as manifestations of human life. (and society) through language as a medium and has a positive effect on human life (humanity)."

Literature is classified according to whether it is fiction or non-fiction, and whether it is poetry or prose. It can be further distinguished according to major forms such as the novel, short story or drama; and works are often categorized according to historical periods or their adherence to certain aesthetic features or expectations (genre). Shahnon Ahmad (in Pradopo, 1993: 7) concludes that the definition of poetry above has broad outlines about the poem actually. These elements are in the form of emotions, imagination, thoughts, ideas, tones, rhythms, sensory impressions, wording, figurative words, density, and mixed

1 Universitas Sumatera Utara

feelings. One of the literary works that has similarities with song is poetry. Most poetry also involve elements of sound and language in their expression. It can be observed that the elements of the language contained in the song are the same poetic language or language that uses the figurative meaning as well as the language contained in poetry. In the preparation of a song or poetry, of course it has building element which is an important part in the creation of a literary work including themes, tastes, tones, mandates, language styles, rhymes, topography, imagery and concrete words. But in this paper I will focus on discussing the theme a theme which is the basic foundation poets to develop poetry or songs. The theme is also the main idea expressed in literature.

Songs are works of art in the form of poetry, tones or sounds that have sequences, scales, chords, combination and and are usually accompanied by musical instruments to produce musical compositions that have unity and balance (contains rhythm). One of the basics in music art is a framework that combines several things so that it can become a work of art or we call it elements in music including melody, rhythm, tone, ladder of tone, harmony, , dynamics and timbre. In a song, it cannot be separated from a lyric that has and important role as the core of the song. The definition of lyrics or song poetry can be considered poetry and vice versa. The same thing was said by Jan van

Luxemburg (1989), “namely the definition of poetic texts not only includes types of literature but also proverbial expressions, advertising messages, political slogans, pop songs and prayers”. Syair / songs lyric are the intent or message contained in a song works. Song lyric can be included in the type of poetry in the

Universitas Sumatera Utara2

literary work. This can be indicated by the similarity of the elements between poetry with song lyrics.

According to Damayanti (2013: 102), words or poetry terms come from languages Arabic namely syi’ir or syu’ur which means “feeling of realization”.

Then the word syu’ur developed into syi’ru which means poetry in general knowledge. At this time the song has changed in terms of the lyrics and music.

Whereas according to Mihardja (2012: 40) reveals that the Syair / lyrics are poetry or essays in a bound form that emphasize rhythm rhyme. Lyrics that once had the theme of love, friendship and life can now turn into freedom, free association, and event contain elements of sex and explicit content. Therefore, parental advisory is very much needed in the era of song production development which is very fast now. In this case the role of singer is very questionable, does he sing only to seek sensation and spread negative effects for the current generation or provide useful and education entertainment for his listeners.

In my paper entitled “A Description of Theme in Selected Songs From The

Beatles' Rubber Soul Album”. I will focus on describing the theme of each of the songs in The Beatles' Rubber Soul Album. Theme are the basis of stories or general ideas of literary work (Nurgiantoro, 2009: 70 ) Stanton (via Nurgiantoro,

2009: 70) explain that the theme can also be called the main idea or main goal.

Based on the basic story or main idea, the author will develop the story. In general theme are the main idea of a thing, one of them in writing. Each writing must have a theme, because in a writing it is recommended to think about what theme will be made. So if it’s supposed to be like a house, the theme is the foundation

This paper uses the qualitative method according to Jamalus (1988:

1)”Understanding music art is a result of art, in the form of songs or compositions that express the thoughts and feelings of the creator through the main elements of music, namely rhythm, melody, harmony, and the form or arrangement of songs and expressions as a whole”.

1.2 Problem of the study

How’s the theme of love portrayed in the selected album in The Beatles'

Rubber Soul Album?

1.3 Objective of the study

To describe the theme of love portrayed in The Beatles’ Rubber Soul

Album.

1.4 Scope of the study

The scope of the study is limited to the theme in 4 (Four) The Beatles’

selected songs from Rubber Soul Album Which Titled: You Won’t See Me, Girl,

What Goes On, Wait

1.5 Significance of the study

Theoretically, the significance of this description is to increase the literary understanding in terms of literary works as poetry, lyric and the song. Practically, it has significance for the readers to understand what theme in the song.

Universitas Sumatera Utara4

1.6 Method of the study

The writer uses the qualitative method in doing this paper. The primary data is in the lyric of the song of The Beatles’ Rubber Soul Album and the secondary of data sources from internet. The writer collects some data to support the description, finding the related data to the research then narrowing data of the internet research to the related element which are about theme. Having understood the theme of the songs, the writer describes theme of the songs and make the conclusion.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 The Definition of Theme

Ideas take the form of an underlying theme or central idea, which helps to tie the work together. (Edgar V. Roberts, Henry E. Jaacobs, 1992:53).

Tarigan (1993:125) suggests “that the theme is a certain view of life or a certain feeling about life or a set of certain values that form or build the main foundation / idea of a literary work”.

Whereas Rusyana (1988:67) argues that: “The theme is the basis or meaning of a story, a theme is a particular view of life or a certain feeling that forms or builds the basis of the main idea of a literary work, and all fiction must have a basis or theme which is the goal of the goal”.

Another opinion was also expressed by Aminudin (1995:91)”The theme is the idea that underlies a story so that it also acts as the starting point for the author in describing the work of fiction he created”.

2.2 Song

Song (Oxford Leaner Pocket Dictionary 2003 : 412) is a short piece ofmusic with words that you sing. The song or lyric is a free stanzaic form that was originally designed to be sung to a repeating melody. The structure and rhyme acheme of the first stanza are therefore duplicated in all subsequent stnazas.

(Edgar V. Roberts, Henry E. Jaacobs, 1992:753).

6 Universitas Sumatera Utara

Songs are compositions of tone or sound in sequence, combination, and temporal relationships (usually accompanied by musical instruments) to produce musical compositions that have unity and continuity (containing rhythm). And various rhythmic tones or sounds are also called songs.

In the Big Indonesian Dictionary (2003:486) understanding of songs exists several types: (1) a variety of rhythmic voices (in speaking, , reading, etc.);

(2) struggle songs; (3) film become the basis of national film stories of official country songs.

Hardjana (1983:486) explains that “songs are a variety of sounds rhythmic

(in speaking, singing, reading, etc.). Song is part of music and music is one part of artwork. By therefore, it can be said that the song is an integrated rhythmic sound with certain rhythms in rhythm, so that different types will appear songs, like keroncong, dangdut, pop, and rock”.

According to Prier (1996:2) “the form of music is an idea / idea that is appears in the processing / arrangement of all elements of music in a composition

(melody, rhythm, harmony and dynamics). This idea unites the notes as well the composition parts are sounded one by one as a framework. Or in other words, the form of music is a container that is filled by a composer and someone processed in such a way that it becomes live music”.

Universitas Sumatera Utara7

2.3 Love

Love is an incredibly powerful word. When you’re in love, you always want to be together, and when you’re not, you’re thinking about being together because you need that person and without them your life is incomplete.

This love is unconditional affection with no limits or conditions: completely loving someone. It’s when you trust the other with your life and when you would do anything for each other. When you love someone, you want nothing more than for them to be truly happy no matter what it takes, because that’s how much you care about them and because their needs come before your own. You hide nothing of yourself and can tell the other anything because you know they accept you just the way you are and vice versa.

Love can make you do anything and sacrifice for what will be better in the end. Love is intense and passionate. Everything seems brighter, happier and more wonderful when you’re in love. If you find it, don’t let it go.

Mifflin (1987:80) “Love is a strong affection or deep concern for another person. Love can be communicated in many different ways. It is expressed through words, for example, or though touch or other actions that show admiration and concern. Love often grows with time. The ability to love is one of the most pleasurable parts of living. All people have the ability to give and the need to receive it”.

Universitas Sumatera Utara8

Les Parrott III and Leslie Parrott "Love is a strange mixture of things that are contradictory. In love there is love and anger, excitement and boredom, stability and change, restriction and freedom. The most fundamental paradox of love is that two become one, but still two".

Descrates “Love is a passion that can be seen as an object that causes it good or bad”.

2.3.1 Types of Love

1. Agape — Unconditional Love

First, we have agape love. This is an altruistic, selfless, unconditional love.

The Greeks thought it was quite radical, perhaps because so few people seem capable of feeling it long-term.

Some people would describe agape as a type of spiritual love. For instance, Christians believe that Jesus exhibited this kind of love for all humans.

He was selfless and sacrificed Himself so that others could be rid of their sins. He suffered for the happiness of others.

2. Eros — Romanic Love

Eros is named after the Greek god of love and fertility. Therefore, it is usually associated with romantic, passionate, and physical love. It is an expression of sexual passion and desire.

Universitas Sumatera Utara9

The Greeks were actually quite fearful of this love, strangely enough. They thought that because human beings have an instinctual impulse to procreate, that this love was so powerful and it would result in a loss of control.

Although the Greeks thought this kind of love was dangerous, it is still the kind of love that is associated with passionate, sexual love. Even in modern days, some people believe that this kind of love “burns hot and bright, but it burns out fast.”

3. Philia — Affectionate Love

The Greeks defined this kind of love as “affectionate love.” In other words, it is the kind of love that you feel for your friends.

Ironically, the ancient Greeks thought this kind of love was better than eros

(sexual love), because it represented love between people who considered themselves equals.

While a lot of people associate the word “love” with romance, Plato always argued that physical attraction wasn’t necessary for love. Hence, why there are many different types of love. This type, in particular, is often referred to as

“platonic” love – love without sexual acts.

4. Philautia — Self-love

Philautia is self-love. In our modern day society, most people associate self-love with being narcissistic, selfish, or stuck on themselves. However, this is not what the ancient Greeks meant by self-love.

Universitas Sumatera Utara10

Self-love is not negative or unhealthy in any way. In fact, it’s necessary to be able to give and receive love from other people. We cannot give to others what we don’t have. And if we don’t love ourselves, how can we truly love others?

Another way to look at self-love is by thinking about it as self- compassion. Just as you might show affection and love to another person, you must also show that same affection and love to yourself.

5. Storge — Familiar Love

Storge can be defined as “familiar love.” Although that’s a strange term, let me explain what it really means.

This type of love looks and feels a lot like philia – affectionate love felt between friends. However, this love is more like a parent-child love.

Just like philia, there is not physical or sexual attraction. But there is a strong bond, kinship, and familiarity between people.

6. Pragma — Enduring Love

The ancient Greeks define pragma as “enduring love.” In other words, it’s almost the opposite of eros (sexual love). Eros tends to burn out quickly because of its passion and intensity. However, pragma is a love that has matured and developed over a long period of time.

Universitas Sumatera Utara11

The kind of old married couples who have been together since their teenage years and still hold hands, well, that’s a great example of pragma.

Unfortunately, this kind of love is somewhat rare to find – especially in society today. These days, people seem to think the grass is always greener on the other side. And therefore, they don’t have the patience or desire to watch love grow over time.

This type of love doesn’t require a lot of effort in a relationship. Both people are good at making compromises, and each of them puts in equal efforts to make the other person happy.

7. Ludus — Playful Love

Ludus is known as the “playful love.” However, a better way to describe it is the feeling of infatuation in the early days of romance. If you’ve been in love before, you know what I’m talking about.

It’s the butterflies in your stomach, the giddiness you feel when you see your love walk through the door, and the feeling of never wanting to be without them.

Studies show that when people are experiencing this type of love, their brain is acting much like it does if it was on cocaine. In other words, your brain is lit up and active just like someone who is literally high on a drug. It makes you feel alive and excited about life.

Universitas Sumatera Utara12

8. Mania — Obsessive Love

Mania is not necessarily a good type of love, because it is obsessive. It’s the type of love that can lead someone into madness, jealousy, or even anger. That is because the balance between eros (sexual) and ludus (playful) is terribly off.

Many people who experience this type of love suffer from low self- esteem. They fear losing the object of their love, and this fear compels them to say or do some “crazy” things in order to keep them.

If not kept under control, mania can be very destructive in some cases.

Universitas Sumatera Utara13

CHAPTER III

A DESCRIPTION OF THEME OF LOVE

3.1 A Desciption of Theme of Love

This paper uses qualitative methods to describe the fragments of the lyrics contained in the song. Themes are usually divided into two, namely major themes and minor themes, but usually minor themes are not too prominent in a literary work compared to the more prominent major themes.

From the explanation above, the author will only focus on the major themes contained in the song to be discussed. Some of the songs I selected on the album Rubber Soul contained the theme of love. This can be seen from the song lyrics on Rubber Soul Album that I listened by myself. The most important to describe in this paper is the songs that I will describe here

3.1.1 You Won’t See Me

"You Won't See Me" is a song by the English the Beatles from their 1965 album Rubber Soul. It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to

Lennon–McCartney. As with songs such as "" and "I'm

Looking Through You" from the same period, the lyrics address McCartney's troubled relationship with and her desire to pursue her career as a stage and film actress. The Beatles recorded the song during what author Mark

Lewisohn describes as a "marathon" final recording session for Rubber Soul, to ensure the album's pre-Christmas release.

14 Universitas Sumatera Utara

When I call you up, your line's engaged I have had enough, so act your age We have lost the time that was so hard to find And I will lose my mind If you won't see me, you won't see me

I don't know why you should want to hide But I can't get through, my hands are tied I won't want to stay, I don't have much to say But I get turned away And you won't see me, you won't see me

Time after time you refuse to even listen I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few they're filled with tears And since I lost you, it feels like years Yes, it seems so long, girl, since you've been gone And I just can't go on If you won't see me, you won't see me

Time after time you refuse to even listen I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few they're filled with tears And since I lost you, it feels like years Yes, it seems so long, girl, since you've been gone I just can't go on If you won't see me, you won't see me

This song is themed about Ignorance. in the song the girl feels she does not want to connect with the man by ignoring her partner. from the fragment of the lyrics:

When I call you up, your line's engaged I have had enough, so act your age

We can see that the girl is busy with her other business because she is calling someone else so her partner can't call her, and the man feeling tired of the childish nature of the girl because she always ignores her partner.

Universitas Sumatera Utara15

After time you refuse to even listen I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missing

From the lyrics fragment above it can be concluded that the man feels constantly ignored by his partner, but the man if he knows what the reason for his partner does not care for him.

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the theme of this song is the Ignorance in relationship.

3.1.2 Girl

"Girl" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1965 album

Rubber Soul. It was written by and credited to Lennon–McCartney.

"Girl" was the last complete song recorded for that album. "Girl" is one of the most melancholic and complex of the Beatles' earlier love songs.

Is there anybody going to listen to my story All about the girl who came to stay? She's the kind of girl You want so much, it makes you sorry Still you don't regret a single day

Ah, girl, girl

When I think of all the times I tried so hard to leave her She will turn to me and start to cry And she promises the earth to me And I believe her After all this time I don't know why

Ah, girl, girl

She's the kind of girl who puts you down When friends are there You feel a fool When you say she's looking good She acts as if it's understood She's cool, ooh, ooh, ooh

Universitas Sumatera Utara16

Girl, girl, girl

Was she told when she was young That pain would lead to pleasure? Did she understand it when they said That a man must break his back To earn his day of leisure? Will she still believe it when he's dead?

Ah, girl, girl, girl Ah, girl, girl

This song tells about Selfishness in a love relationship. Where the man feels lied to by his partner because the girl always lends hope to uncertain hope to the man. This is where problems occur in the relationship of love where the man is always disappointed with false expectations so that the man always feels disappointed in his partner.

When I think of all the times I tried so hard to leave her

From the fragments of the lyrics above the man tried as hard as possible to stay away from his partner, but the girl kept coming back to him, constantly begging and giving false hopes.

She's the kind of girl who puts you down When friends are there You feel a fool

From the lyrics above, the girl always embarrasses the guy in front of her friends. The conclusion of the whole theme of this song is Selfishness in endless love relationships and always gives false hope for unilateral interests.

Universitas Sumatera Utara17

3.1.3 What Goes On

"What Goes On" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, featured as the eighth track on their 1965 album Rubber Soul. The song was later released as the B-side of the US single "Nowhere Man", and then as the tenth track on the

North America-only album . It is the only song by credited to Lennon–McCartney–Starkey.

What goes on in your heart? What goes on in your mind? You are tearing me apart When you treat me so unkind What goes on in your mind

The other day I saw you As I walked along the road But when I saw him with you I could feel my future fold It's so easy for a girl like you to lie Tell me why

What goes on in your heart? What goes on in your mind? You are tearing me apart When you treat me so unkind What goes on in your mind

I met you in the morning Waiting for the tides of time But now I can see that I was blind It's so easy for a girl like you to lie Tell me why

What goes on in your heart?

I used to think of no on else But you were just the same You didn't even think of me As someone with a name Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die Tell me why

What goes on in your heart?

Universitas Sumatera Utara18

What goes on in your mind? You are tearing me apart When you treat me so unkind What goes on in your mind

The song is about the Lies of the girl to her partner, so the man always asks what exactly causes the girl not to care about him. A man who feels neglected feels hurt because the girl doesn't think he is in his life.

The other day I saw you As I walked along the road But when I saw him with you I could feel my future fold It's so easy for a girl like you to lie

From the lyrics fragment above explains that the boy saw the girl related to other men and the guy felt betrayed, and the boy felt that the girl always did lies as he pleased. The whole point of this song is about Lies in relationship and selfish relationship to the boy.

3.1.4. Wait

"Wait" is a song released by the English rock band the Beatles from their

1965 album Rubber Soul. The song is credited to Lennon–McCartney, although in the 1997 book, Many Years from Now, McCartney recalls it as entirely his. This is supported by a 1970 interview with John Lennon by Ray Connolly, in which he could not remember writing it; "That must be one of Paul's," he said.

It's been a long time Now I'm coming back home I've been away now Oh how I've been alone

Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

But if your heart breaks Don't wait, turn me away And if your heart's strong Hold on, I won't delay Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

Universitas Sumatera Utara19

I feel as though You ought to know That I've been good As good as I can be And if you do I'll trust in you And know that you Will wait for me

It's been a long time Now I'm coming back home I've been away now Oh how I've been alone

Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

I feel as though You ought to know That I've been good As good as I can be And if you do I'll trust in you And know that you Will wait for me

But if your heart breaks Don't wait, turn me away And if your heart's strong Hold on, I won't delay

Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

It's been a long time Now I'm coming back home I've been away now Oh, how I've been alone

This song is themed about Trust in a love relationship, where the guy hopes for his partner to always be loyal waiting for him to dissat the guy is away from the girl. The guy tries as hard as possible so that his partner doesn't leave him. and if the guy doesn't keep his promise, then the guy is willing to let go of the girl to leave him.

Universitas Sumatera Utara20

But if your heart breaks Don't wait, turn me away And if your heart's strong Hold on, I won't delay

From the above lyric fragments, it is explained that the love relationship must have mutual trust and want to wait for each other. At the lyrics the guy said to the girl that if the girl can't afford to wait for the guy then the guy is willing to cut off his relationship with the girl, but if the girl is able to wait then the guy will try his best so the girl doesn't feel disappointed.

I feel as though You ought to know That I've been good As good as I can be And if you do I'll trust in you And know that you Will wait for me

From the lyrics fragment above, it was explained that the boy believed that the girl was able and believed that the girl was able to wait for her to return and the boy did everything he could not to make the girl wait and disappointed.

The overall conclusion of the lyrics above can be concluded that the theme of this song is Trust in a love relationship.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusion

The theme of love is the main idea contained in a literary work that confirms the life of romance in a relationship both in terms of fun and sadness.

After being analyzed or described about the theme of the song chosen in the album The Beatles' Rubber Soul, the writer can conclude that the theme of love contained in the songs discussed is themed about Ignorance, Selfishness, Lies, and

Trust in each of the four songs. discussed by the author. We can understand that the tries to tell the listener that the contents of the songs contained in the album Rubber Soul tend to contain more themes of love about sadness.

4.2 Suggestion

After describing the theme contained in the album The Beatles' Rubber

Soul, the author wanted to give two suggestions. here are two suggestions in this paper.

We must understand each other in a love relationship so that the relationship is maintained and can last long.

We must respect each other in a love relationship and have to find a way out in every romance problem so that there is no continuous sadness.

C. Lyrics

You Won't See Me

When I call you up, your line's engaged I have had enough, so act your age We have lost the time that was so hard to find And I will lose my mind If you won't see me, you won't see me

I don't know why you should want to hide But I can't get through, my hands are tied I won't want to stay, I don't have much to say But I get turned away

And you won't see me, you won't see me Time after time you refuse to even listen

I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missing Though the days are few they're filled with tears And since I lost you, it feels like years Yes, it seems so long, girl, since you've been gone And I just can't go on If you won't see me, you won't see me

Time after time you refuse to even listen I wouldn't mind if I knew what I was missing

Girl

Is there anybody going to listen to my story All about the girl who came to stay? She's the kind of girl You want so much, it makes you sorry Still you don't regret a single day

Ah, girl, girl

When I think of all the times I tried so hard to leave her She will turn to me and start to cry And she promises the earth to me And I believe her After all this time I don't know why

Ah, girl, girl

She's the kind of girl who puts you down When friends are there You feel a fool When you say she's looking good She acts as if it's understood She's cool, ooh, ooh, ooh

Girl, girl, girl

Was she told when she was young That pain would lead to pleasure? Did she understand it when they said That a man must break his back To earn his day of leisure? Will she still believe it when he's dead?

Ah, girl, girl, girl Ah, girl, girl

What Goes On

What goes on in your heart? What goes on in your mind? You are tearing me apart When you treat me so unkind What goes on in your mind

The other day I saw you As I walked along the road But when I saw him with you I could feel my future fold It's so easy for a girl like you to lie Tell me why

What goes on in your heart? What goes on in your mind? You are tearing me apart When you treat me so unkind What goes on in your mind

I met you in the morning Waiting for the tides of time But now the tide is turning I can see that I was blind It's so easy for a girl like you to lie Tell me why

What goes on in your heart?

I used to think of no on else But you were just the same You didn't even think of me As someone with a name Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die Tell me why

Wait

It's been a long time Now I'm coming back home I've been away now Oh how I've been alone Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

But if your heart breaks Don't wait, turn me away And if your heart's strong Hold on, I won't delay

Wait till I come back to your side We'll forget the tears we've cried

I feel as though You ought to know That I've been good As good as I can be And if you do I'll trust in you And know that you Will wait for me

It's been a long time Now I'm coming back home I've been away now Oh how I've been alone
