Foley1, Kathryn Green2, Chantelle Tebaldi2, Vicki Smith1, Tashina Bennett1, Kathleen Heaney3, Lisa Math3, Christine Royal3 and Fangshi Sun3 Abstract Background: A study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of two different oral flea and tick products to control flea infestations, reduce pruritus and minimize dermatologic lesions over a 12 week period on naturally infested dogs in west central FL USA. Methods: Thirty-four dogs with natural flea infestations living in 17 homes were treated once with a fluralaner chew on study day 0. Another 27 dogs living in 17 different homes were treated orally with an afoxolaner chewable on day 0, once between days 28–30 and once again between days 54–60. All products were administered according to label directions by study investigators. Flea populations on pets were assessed using visual area counts and premise flea infestations were assessed using intermittent-light flea traps on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and once between days 28–30, 40–45, 54–60 and 82–86. Dermatologic assessments were conducted on day 0 and once monthly. Pruritus assessments were conducted by owners throughout the study. No concurrent treatments for existing skin disease (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-fungals) were allowed. -

This article reports the results of a copromicroscopic and molecular investigation carried out on faecal samples of wolves (n=37) and brown bears (n=80) collected in two protected national parks of central Italy (Abruzzo Region). Twenty-three (62.2%) samples from wolves were positive for parasite eggs. Eight (34.78%) samples scored positive for single infections, i.e. E. aerophilus (21.74%), Ancylostoma/Uncinaria (4.34%), Trichuris vulpis (4.34%), T. canis (4.34%). Polyspecific infections were found in 15 samples (65.21%), these being the most frequent association: E. aerophilus and Ancylostoma/Uncinaria. Thirty-seven (46.25%) out of the 80 faecal samples from bears were positive for parasite eggs. Fourteen (37.83%) samples were positive for B. transfuga, and six (16.21%) of them also contained Ancylostoma/Uncinaria, one (2.7%) E. -

EMA/704200/2014 EMEA/V/C/003842 Nexgard Spectra (afoxolaner/milbemycin oxime) An overview of Nexgard Spectra and why it is authorised in the EU What is Nexgard Spectra and what is it used for? Nexgard Spectra is a veterinary medicine used to treat infestations with fleas, ticks, as well as demodectic and sarcoptic mange (skin infestations caused by two different types of mites) in dogs when prevention of heartworm disease (caused by a worm that infects the heart and blood vessels and is transmitted by mosquitoes), lungworm disease, eye worm and/or treatment of gut worms (hookworms, roundworms and whipworm) is also required. Nexgard Spectra contains the active substances afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime. How is Nexgard Spectra used? Nexgard Spectra is available as chewable tablets in five different strengths for use in dogs of different weights. It can only be obtained with a prescription. The appropriate strength of tablets should be used according to the dog’s weight. Treatment for fleas and ticks should be repeated at monthly intervals during the flea or tick seasons; Nexgard Spectra can be used as part of the seasonal treatment of fleas and ticks in dogs infected with gut worms. A single dose of Nexgard Spectra is given to treat gut worms. After which, further flea and tick treatment should be continued with a monovalent product containing a single active substance. For demodectic mange, treatment should be repeated monthly until the mange is successfully treated (as confirmed by two negative skin scrapings one month apart) whereas for sarcoptic mange treatment is given monthly for two months, or longer based on clinical signs and skin scrapings. -

The raccoon dog has recently invaded into Europe from the east. The contribution of this exotic species to the epidemiology of parasitic diseases, particularly parasitic zoonoses is unknown. The helminth fauna and the abundance of helminth infections were determined in 310 carcasses of hunted redfoxes and 99 of raccoon dogs from Lithuania. Both species were highly infected with Alaria alata (94·8% and 96·5% respectively) and Trichinella spp. (46·6% and 29·3%). High and significantly different prevalences in foxes and raccoon dogs were found for Eucoleus aerophilus (97·1% and 30·2% respectively), Crenosoma vulpis (53·8% and 15·1%), Capillaria plica (93·3% and 11·3%), C. putorii (29·4% and 51·5%), Toxocara canis (40·5% and 17·6%) and Uncinaria stenocephala (76·9% and 98·8%). Twentyfive mustelids were examined for hel Vytautas Mažeika*, minths: 2 pine martens (Martes martes), 4 stone martens (Mar tes foina), 9 American minks (Neovison vison) and 10 European Algimantas Paulauskas polecats (Mustela putorius). Nine taxa of the parasitic worms were found: trematodes Isthmiophora melis (Schrank, 1788) and Stri Faculty of Natural Sciences, gea strigis (Schrank, 1788) mesocercaria, cestodes Mesocestoides Vytautas Magnus University, lineatus Goeze, 1782 and Cestoda g. sp. and nematodes Eucoleus Vileikos str. 8, aerophilus (Creplin, 1839), Aonchotheca putorii (Rudolphi, 1819), LT-44404 Kaunas, Lithuania Crenosoma schachmatovae Kontrimavičius, 1969, Molineus pa tens (Rudolphi, 1845) and Nematoda g. sp. However, human activities and politics (e.g., fragmentation of the environment, land use, recycling in urban settings) have consistently favoured the encroachment of urban areas upon wild environments, ultimately causing alteration of many ecosystems with changes in the composition of the wild fauna and destruction of boundaries between domestic and wild environments. Therefore, the exchange of parasites from wild to domestic carnivores and vice versa have enhanced the public health relevance of wild carnivores and their potential impact in the epidemiology of many zoonotic parasitic diseases. The risk of transmission of zoonotic nematodes from wild carnivores to humans via food, water and soil (e.g., genera Ancylostoma, Baylisascaris, Capillaria, Uncinaria, Strongyloides, Toxocara, Trichinella) or arthropod vectors (e.g., genera Dirofilaria spp., Onchocerca spp., Thelazia spp.) and the emergence, re-emergence or the decreasing trend of selected infections is herein discussed. In addition, the reasons for limited scientific information about some parasites of zoonotic concern have been examined. A correct compromise between conservation of wild carnivores and risk of introduction and spreading of parasites of public health concern is discussed in order to adequately manage the risk of zoonotic nematodes of wild carnivores in line with the ’One Health’ approach.
