Perceptions of Public Drinking Water in Newfoundland And PERCEPTIONS OF PUBLIC DRINKING WATER IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR: A MIXED METHODS STUDY By © KELLY DAWN BUTT A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Medicine Department of Community Health and Humanities Faculty of Medicine Memorial University ofNewfoundland St. Jolm's, Newfoundland and Labrador August 2010 ABSTRACT From a health promotion perspective, it is important to understand what water sources the public is using and why, and to address any potential health risks relating to public and alternative water sources before negative health outcomes relating to water-borne contaminants are experienced. This study examined perceptions of public drinking water in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) including factors that influence public drinking water consumption patterns, reported reasons for alternative water use, and the expressed need for information on drinking water. Three focus groups were conducted in October 2006 and a telephone survey in March and April 2007 with residents ofNL. Consumers appeared to use water aesthetics as a proxy measure of water safety for tap water and alternative water sources. When participants were unsure about the quality and safety of their tap water, they tended to find an alternative drinking water source. Low compliance with boil water advisory notifications was also observed, which may increase risk of waterborne illness in this population. Transparent communication enhanced trust and general perceptions by public water consumers. In general, public tap water consumers in NL felt that more information about their household drinking water quality would provide more confidence in the product. Enhanced information dissemination may improve perceptions of the safety of drinking water, and minimize health risks to the general public. No single information dissemination method was found to be extensive enough to communicate with the entire population; a combination of distribution methods is recommended to ensure widespread and timely information transfer. A health 11 promotion framework was used to make upstream recommendations for changes in drinking water policy and programs in NL. The rise of the FPU ushered in a new era of class politics. But fishermen were divided in their support for the union; Irish-Catholic fishermen have long been seen as at the periphery—or entirely outside—of the FPU’s fold. Appeals to ethno- religious unity among Irish Catholics contributed to their ambivalence about or opposition to the union. Yet, many Irish Catholics chose to support the FPU. Gaulton In 2001 archaeologists working at the 17th-century English settlement at Ferryland, Newfoundland, uncovered evidence of an early structure beneath a mid-to-late century gentry dwelling. A preliminary analysis of the architectural features and material culture from related deposits tentatively identified the structure as a brewhouse and bakery, likely the same “brewhouse room” mentioned in a 1622 letter from the colony. Further analysis of this material in 2010 confirmed the identification and dating of this structure. Comparison of the Ferryland brewhouse to data from both documentary and archaeological sources revealed some unusual features. When analyzed within the context of the original Calvert period settlement, these features provide additional evidence for the interpretation of the initial settlement at Ferryland not as a corporate colony such as Jamestown or Cupids, but as a small country manor home for George Calvert and his family.

    Report on Harbour Grace People, Places & Culture Workshop November 2018 1 Introduction Heritage NL’s program “People, Places & Culture” is designed to assist communities to identify their cultural assets and to consider ways to protect and develop them. It is based on a recognition that heritage/cultural assets are some of the strongest elements that a community has to: define its unique character; create new economic opportunities; and enhance the quality of life for residents and instill local pride. This report represents the output of a “People, Places & Culture” WorKshop facilitated by Heritage NL in Harbour Grace in November 2018 comprising two parts: I) a cultural mapping activity that considered the community’s tangible and intangible cultural assets; and II) a session to explore opportunities for protecting, safeguarding and developing these assets. Workshop Session I: Heritage Assets What Participants Want from the Workshop WorKshop participants expressed that they were attending the session because they wanted to help realize the potential of Harbour Grace’s heritage, much liKe other communities in the province have done. A discussion was held at the start of the session around what participants hoped would come out of the worKshop. Three Key areas were identified by the group: A. Inventorying our Heritage The group identified a need to identify and catalogue what exists in the community, so there is a good record of assets. There is a sense that there is already great material out there, based on previous research, collections, and oral histories, both public and privately owned. How do we find this information and maKe it useful for our town? And then how do we identify themes or areas of focus (church, courthouse, family history, etc.) and undertake new research, such as oral histories, to fill in the gaps? B.

After a very foggy flight of 4 hours, 24 minutes with two men, Bill Stultz, a pilot, and S,lim Gordon, a mechanic. People were in dories with ropes. They used the ropes as tools 'to help the crew land the plane safely. Amelia called the people in the dories "Maritime Cowboys." 2.. - , f .. ":_-- ~- ".:~.)r \ . ·1 . ·•. ' . Amelia was not happy and. in Trepassey because there were other female pilots who Were waiting b the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. tryin9 to e Amelia and her crew left Trepassey on June 17, 1928 in their plane called The Friendship. Amelia was the flight commander on the plane which meant that she got to make the decisions.
