His face is scarred and thick around the nose... His black hair shines and hangs in his eyes. Rocky fights in a plodding, machine-like style. The BLACK FIGHTER dances and bangs combinations into Rocky's face with great accuracy. But the punches do not even cause Rocky to blink... He grins at his opponent and keeps grinding ahead. The people at ringside sit on folding chairs and clamor for blood... They lean out of their seats and heckle the fighters. In the thick smoke they resemble spectres. Everyone is hustling bets...     For Immediate Release BalletX Pop Up at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Iconic Rocky Steps, May 15 Philadelphia—May 2019—BalletX, led by Artistic & Executive Director Christine Cox, will perform a Pop Up dance at the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s East Steps–also known as the Rocky steps–overlooking the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The Pop Up performance will take place Wednesday, May 15 from 5:30pm-6:30pm, and feature two works from BalletX’s repertory of over 70 world premieres, as well as a special appearance by members of the BalletX Dream Team, a group of student dancers. BalletX Pop Ups are free and open to the public, thanks to generous support from The William Penn Foundation. “As a lifelong Philadelphian, born and raised in West Philly, I am beaming with pride that BalletX will perform at such an iconic site and intersection of fine arts, pop culture, and civic pride. It truly is a dream come true, and captures the spirit of what BalletX is all about,” says Cox. For the museum Pop Up, BalletX will perform two signature works by company co- founder and choreographer Matthew Neenan, 2010’s The Last Glass and 2014’s Increasing. Neenan’s The Last Glass was commended by The New York Times for “making something both serious and passionate to the pop music of our time,” namely the indie rock band Beirut, whose music can be heard throughout the work. The latter work, Increasing, covering another end of the musical spectrum, is set to the first movement of Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, and will be performed live by a local chamber ensemble, comprising graduates of Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.

University Microfilms, Inc. PREFACE From a literary perspective, the first half of the nineteenth century was an era neither of great plays nor of great dramatists. It has often been assumed that because the dramatic literature was a derelict wallowing in the heavy swells of the times, the theatre itself was foundering and unworthy of more than a cursory glance. While there may be some truth to this judgment, it is a generalization that does not do justice to what is otherwise an exciting and complex period in the history of the theatre. There have been greater periods of dramatic writing, and perhaps of individual acting or of scene design. Without doubt, the theatre had been financially stronger in other times. But in no way should this negate either the importance or vitality of the theatre in the first half of the century. The period was one of con­ stant transition and adaptation to new social and economic conditions.

"Stand" consists of 10 stacked cast iron block sculptures, each standing about 10-feet-tall. Look to the top of the Rocky Steps – or do your best Balboa impression and run up – and you'll now see ten cast-iron sculptures by British artist Sir Antony Gormley. They're each 10-feet tall and weigh nearly 3 tons. Each was created from a "lived moment," according to Gormley. "I use to be molded in the position I wanted the sculpture to be in, now I get scanned," he said at the installations' official unveiling Thursday. The figurative blocks sculptures, collectively called "Stand," are a temporary installment. They will be at the museum's east terrace through June 16. This is the first time they've been publicly displayed. Each one has its own simple title. If approached from street level the sculptures are, from left to right, "Home," "Assuage," "Lull," "Switch," "Daze," "Prop," "Ponder," "Rate," "Reserve" and "Assay." Knowing their labels isn't so important, though.
