Wren and the English Baroque
What is English Baroque? • An architectural style promoted by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) that developed between the Great Fire (1666) and the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). It is associated with the new freedom of the Restoration following the Cromwell’s puritan restrictions and the Great Fire of London provided a blank canvas for architects. In France the repeal of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 revived religious conflict and caused many French Huguenot craftsmen to move to England. • In total Wren built 52 churches in London of which his most famous is St Paul’s Cathedral (1675-1711). Wren met Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) in Paris in August 1665 and Wren’s later designs tempered the exuberant articulation of Bernini’s and Francesco Borromini’s (1599-1667) architecture in Italy with the sober, strict classical architecture of Inigo Jones. • The first truly Baroque English country house was Chatsworth, started in 1687 and designed by William Talman. • The culmination of English Baroque came with Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) and Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661-1736), Castle Howard (1699, flamboyant assemble of restless masses), Blenheim Palace (1705, vast belvederes of massed stone with curious finials), and Appuldurcombe House, Isle of Wight (now in ruins). Vanburgh’s final work was Seaton Delaval Hall (1718, unique in its structural audacity). Vanburgh was a Restoration playwright and the English Baroque is a theatrical creation. In the early 18th century the English Baroque went out of fashion. It was associated with Toryism, the Continent and Popery by the dominant Protestant Whig aristocracy. The Whig Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham, built a Baroque house in the 1720s but criticism resulted in the huge new Palladian building, Wentworth Woodhouse, we see today. -

The Eastern region was allocated 57 constituencies under the initial and revised proposals, a reduction of one from the existing allocation. In Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Essex it was possible to allocate a whole number of constituencies to each county. 1 3. In response to the consultation on the initial proposals and secondary consultation the Commission received over 2,000 representations regarding the Eastern region. Statement from Hinxton and other South Cambridgeshire Parish Councils to the Uttlesford District Council Planning Policy Working Group meeting, Thursday 31 May 2018 Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the proposed North Uttlesford Garden Community. Although I speak for Hinxton, my comments are fully supported by the chairs of the parish councils of Ickleton, Duxford, Pampisford, Whittlesford, Little Abington, and Great Abington - that is, by all those parishes in South Cambridgeshire that are directly affected. It is clear that Uttlesford is not proud of this proposed new town. You could not have pushed it further away. More than half of its edge is actually defined by the Essex-Cambridge county boundary. What a bizarre site for a town purporting to provide homes for people working in Uttlesford! Whatever the short-term political convenience of this choice, it has profound long-term implications for our parishes. We abut on half the proposed new town boundary, but we shall have to bear far, far more than half of the infrastructural and amenity costs. This is because the town would be high in our River Cam watershed, with all the flooding and pollution management implications bearing on our down-stream villages. It is because the town would be on top of the main aquifers of our water supplier, Cambridge Water, but not of yours, Affinity Water. It is because the traffic for the new town cannot possibly rely on the winding road to Saffron Walden. It will overwhelmingly be forced onto the already congested roads of South Cambridgeshire. It is because, over the years while the new town grows, the costs of its health, education and other needs will unavoidably be borne by our nearby communities in South Cambridgeshire. -

BACKGROUND 1.1 Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CUHFT) launched e-hospital (EPIC) at 2am on Sunday 26 October 2014. At the same time, we have seen unprecedented demand in attendances at A&E and non-elective admissions across the system. E-hospital is a technology programme that provides an electronic patient record for hospital patients. CUHFT has been working with two partners over 18 months to implement the system. The software system is provided by a company called EPIC and the technology infrastructure is provided by Hewlett Packard. CUHFT developed a full business case outlining a number of benefits which will be realised over time following the implementation. These include quicker co-ordinated care for patients in which they can be more involved (through a patient portal to be introduced in 6 months), consistent access to better quality information for hospital clinicians, and GPs will have more structured and accessible information about their patients. These benefits will be delivered over time and were not expected to be evident in the weeks after system go- live. -

Appenidx A Shared Services Report of the Leaders of Cambridge City, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Huntingdonshire District Council. 1. Purpose Cambridge City Council, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire all made decisions in July to work in partnership to deliver shared services. A significant amount of work has taken place since then and this report sets out progress together with proposed next steps to ensure momentum is maintained. 2. Recommendations 2.1 To note the good progress to date by all three Councils working together to deliver shared services. 2.2 To agree the general principles set out in Paragraph 4, namely: The lead authority model in the first instance (4.1) Proposed lead and location arrangements (4.2) Proposed cost sharing proposals (4.3) 2.3 To agree to a phased approach to the development of ICT and Legal Shared Services, with interim project support appointed to assist with the process and develop full business cases. 2.4 To establish a Business and Legal Practice Manager in advance of the proposed shared legal service to assist with the transformation programme and development of the shared service. 3. Summary of progress to date The three councils have been working well together to deliver Phase 1 of a series of shared services. Progress on ICT and Legal is included later in this report. Waste Collection, involving the City Council and South Cambridgeshire, forms a separate report and Building Control, involving Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire, will be brought forward for decision in November. Other discussions involving shared services are also currently taking place through City Deal. -

RUSTAT MEMORIAL: FACULTY APPLICATION: INTRODUCTION In May 2019, the College Council of Jesus College Cambridge set up the Legacy of Slavery Working Party (LSWP) to undertake an extended review of the College’s historic links to enslavement and its long-term impact. The LSWP provided an interim report in November 2019, and a further set of recommendations in November 2020. Among the recommendations is action to be taken with respect to the large memorial to Tobias Rustat, which is featured on the west wall of the College Chapel.1 Tobias Rustat (1608—1693) was one of the College’s largest benefactors before the twentieth century. Rustat was also an investor in several trading companies including the Company of Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa, commonly called the Royal African Company, which was chartered in 1663 and reincorporated in 1672 as The Royal African Company (RAC). The Royal African Company played a major role in the slave trade at the time. The fact of Rustat’s involvement both with the College and in the slave trade is not in doubt. Further historical information and analysis by the Legacy of Slavery Working Party can be found in Appendix 1. By the time of the LSWP’s recommendations in November 2020, the Church of England had called for a critical dialogue over memorials which ‘have links to slave trading or the exploitation of people,’ noting that such dialogue ‘must have real outcomes’ which ‘may include re-interpretation, or gaining permission for the alteration or removal of monuments’.2 Since then, the report of the Archbishops’ Anti-Racism Taskforce, From Lament to Action, has been published (April 2021). -
