He made the transition to molecular biology as a postdoctoral fellow in David Baltimore's laboratory at M.I.T. and the Whitehead Institute, where he identified the transcription factor NF-κB. The NF-κB transcription factor family plays critical roles in many normal physiological processes and pathological conditions such as cancers, inflammation and autoimmune diseases. In 1987, Dr. Sen was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and Rosenstiel Research Center at Brandeis University. He earned tenure in 1991 and was promoted to Professor of Biology in 1998. He moved to his present position as Chief, Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology and Immunology at the National Institute on Aging in 2003. In 2014, Dr. Sen was elected as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellow for his distinguished contributions to the fields of transcription factor biology and molecular immunology, specifically related to immune system development.
