Directions: Road, on SH43, 21 km southwest from Taumarunui. Access: Road or by river. Take care when turning into the reserve. A large vehicle turning area is located 2 km west of the entrance. Booking: Only required if staying as part of the Whanganui Journey Great Walk (book online).

3 Simpsons Domain 20 A very basic campsite set in a spectacular forest just 5 min off State Highway 1. Directions: From SH1, just north of Hunterville turn west into Murimoto Road. Continue down Murimoto Road until you reach the domain. Access: Short gravel road. Note: No water provided, bring your own.

4 Piripiri 4 The campsite is in a small clearing next to the Pohangina River, with good trout fishing and hunting upstream of the campsite. Directions: From Ashhurst, drive north along Cambridge Ave/Pohangina Road, then right into Pohangina Valley East Road. Follow for approx 25 km. The camp is just past the Takapari Road turn-off by the Piripiri Bridge. Access: Access for campervans only in dry weather. Sealed road. Short, steep access track may be slippery when wet. Notes: Keep dogs on a leash at all times.

5 Pohangina Base 3 The campsite overlooks the Pohangina River to the west of the Ruahine Forest Park. Directions: From Ashhurst, drive north along Cambridge Ave/Pohangina Road, then right into Pohangina Valley East Road. Follow for approx 25 km. Camp is approx 1 km past the Takapari Road turn-off. Access: Sealed, then mown grass. Note: Campsites must be booked online or through the Visitor Centre (04) 384 7770.
