What impresses readers most is the frequent usage of Gothic features, like murders, ghost, witches, and so on. The paper will make a tentative study on Gothic settings, Gothic characters, and Gothic plots in Macbeth. The age of confusing right and wrong and horrible environmental settings will be expounded; then, the detailed analysis of Gothic characters like Macbeth, the trio of Witches and Lady Macbeth will be elaborated on; the plots of noumenal horror and mental terror will be elucidated finally. It is helpful for deeply understanding the drama’s theme and interpreting the work from a new perspective, which plays a positive role in the research and development of Gothic literature and possesses certain significance for literary reference. Keywords: Macbeth, Gothic settings, Gothic characters, Gothic plots Introduction Gothicism in literature has different stages of development and it is generally believed that it is pioneered by Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story (1764) and flourished through the early 19th century. The Gothic fiction is characterized by depicting the events of horror, ghost, violence, nightmare, and so on; besides, its locale is often a gloomy and mysterious castle. The Gothic works are destined to depend on terror and horror, though bringing about emotional changes in distinctive ways. -

Michael Sadleir, XIX Century Fiction It seems appropriate that the Sadleir-Black collection of Gothic fictions, a genre peppered with illicit passions, should be described by its progenitor as the fruit of lust. Michael Sadleir (1888-1957), the person who cultivated this passion, was a noted bibliographer, book collector, publisher and creative writer. Educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford, Sadleir joined the office of the publishers Constable and Company in 1912, becoming Director in 1920. He published seven reasonably successful novels; important biographical studies of Trollope, Edward and Rosina Bulwer, and Lady Blessington; and a number of ground-breaking bibliographical works, most significantly Excursions in Victorian Bibliography (1922) and XIX Century Fiction (1951). -

Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. Cette étude fait l’analyse d’ouvrages de littérature cyberpunk écrits entre 1981 et 2005, et situe la littérature féminine cyberpunk dans le contexte d’une discussion culturelle plus vaste des questions féministes. Elle établit les origines du genre, analyse les réactions culturelles et, par la suite, donne un aperçu des différentes manières dont la littérature féminine cyberpunk a transformé les usages du genre afin de promouvoir en particulier le point de vue féministe. -

No conventions in October, which is rare these days, but there was the Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com. They had some seriously good stuff, including writing from Diana Vick, who also appears in these pages, and myself! There was a great piece from Nisi Shawl that mentioned the amazing panel that she, Liz Gorinsky, Michael Swanwick and Ann VanderMeer were on at World Fantasy last year. Jaymee Goh had a piece on Commodification and Post-Modernism that was well-written, though slightly troubling to me. Stephen Hunt’s Steampunk Timeline was good stuff, and the omnipresent GD Falksen (who has never written for us!) had a couple of good piece. Me? I wrote an article about how Tomorrowland was the signpost for the rise of Steampunk. You can read it at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/goodbye-tomorrow- hello-yesterday. This much attention is a good thing for Steampunk, especially from a site like Tor.com, a gateway for a lot of SF readers who aren’t necessarily a part of fandom. -

118 Reviews of Books does, the book is a pleasure. He roots it in feminist, race, and sf scholarship, just as he grounds Butler in black American women’s writing traditions and sf tropes. Moreover, he stays focused on his literary argument and doesn’t get lost in the weeds of debates about agency, humanism, and the problematic legacy of the Enlightenment. Ultimately, Of Bodies, Communities, and Voices is indispensable for any Butler scholar, primarily because of the ways he connects so many of her work’s central concerns without reducing its complexity or variety. It will function more as a source of research than pedagogy, except maybe in upper-level classes centered on Butler. I recommend it not only to scholars of Butler but sf in general, especially in terms of afrofuturism, posthumanism, or any of Bast’s focal points (agency, bodies, community, voice). Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2016. 288 pp. ISBN 978-1-78-138376-6. £75 hc. Reviewed by D. Harlan Wilson Biopunk is among the more recent sf subgenres to emerge from the virtual citadel of 1980s cyberpunk. There have been others—most prominently steampunk, but also splatterpunk, nanopunk, dieselpunk, bugpunk, even elfpunk and monkpunk—but biopunk narratives are perhaps the first truly authentic descendant of the cyberpunks, featuring gritty dystopian settings, beat characters, corporate terrorism, techno-pathology, and body invasion. Instead of hacking computers, however, biopunks hack DNA and operate in worlds where the processes and products of genetic engineering are brought to bear by various forms of mad scientism. -

The Figure of the Vampire Has Been Inextricably Linked to the History Of
ENTERTEXT From Pathology to Invisibility: The Discourse of Ageing in Vampire Fiction Author: Marta Miquel-Baldellou Source: EnterText, “Special Issue on Ageing and Fiction,” 12 (2014): 95-114. Abstract A diachronic analysis of the way the literary vampire has been characterised from the Victorian era to the contemporary period underlines a clear evolution which seems especially relevant from the perspective of ageing studies. One of the permanent features characterising the fictional vampire from its origins to its contemporary manifestations in literature is precisely the vampire’s disaffection with the effects of ageing despite its actual old age. Nonetheless, even though the vampire no longer ages in appearance, the way it has been presented has significantly evolved from a remarkable aged appearance during the Victorian period through Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872) or Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) to outstanding youth in Anne Rice’s An Interview with the Vampire (1976), adolescence in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight (2005), and even childhood in John Ajvide Lindquist’s Let The Right One In (2007), thus underlining a significant process of rejuvenation despite the vampire’s acknowledged old age. THE DISTRICT MESSENGER The Newsletter of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London Roger Johnson, Mole End, 41 Sandford Road, Chelmsford CM2 6DE no. 125 9th November 1992 The (London) Evening Standard of 29th October had an article "Is This the Real Sherlock Holmes?" by Bill West, who identifies Edwin Holmes and his assistant Thomas Watson, pioneers of the electrical security system in the 19th century. I can provide photocopies if you're interested. The BBC Radio 4 series The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,Holmes, with Clive Merrison and Michael Williams, concluded a couple of weeks ago with a full-blooded "Final Problem", written by Bert Coules. Tape cassettes of the plays were already in the shops, and very good they are too. Vols 1 & 2 each contain four stories, while vol. 3 has three ("The Final Problem" occupies a whole cassette, being split neatly in the middle). Bert tells me that the recording of The Return is well under way. Guest stars include Denis Quilley as Bob Carruthers, Peter Sallis as Jonas Oldacre, Peter Vaughan as Milverton and David March as Lord Bellinger; Michael Pennington and Frederick Treves will be heard again as Moriarty & Moran in "The Empty House". Charles Hall (12 Paisley Terrace, Edinburgh EH8 7JW; phone 031-661 2822) has a new list of SheSherlockrlock Holmes Mementos & Related Items, featuring the various aspects of his own artistic versatility: caricature postcards, in colour and black & white, earthenware busts and mugs, metal figures, and the few remaining copies of his book The Sherlock Holmes Collection --- all very collectable stuff. The latest additions to Charles' range are three low-relief metal sculptures: a double-sided profile of Holmes about 1½" high (£2.60), and full-figure caricatures of Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson about 2" high (each £2.70); the pieces each come mounted on a shallow wooden plinth.
