SUBSTITUTE ORGANIST LIST 13 On August 5th, 1984, Hampton, one of the most unique voices in church music, was silenced by complications of HIV/AIDS. This year marks the KIMMEL CENTER NEWS 14 30th Anniversary of his death. Hampton’s student and close friend, Harry Huff, will kick off the evening with a lecture and remembrances starting at WHERE AM I? 15 7:00 p.m., followed by a concert at 8:00 p.m. Through the generosity of Huff, the Saint Mark’s Choir will sing several works that are as of yet TALE PIPES 15 unpublished: Hampton’s arrangement of the John Jacob Niles song “I Wonder as I Wander;” a multi movement Cantata “Sing My Tongue” based upon a new setting of the English translation of the ancient Latin text by John Mason Neale and composed for Philip Brunelle; the Ascensiontide Motet “Ascendit in Caelos;” and Hampton’s sublime set- ting of “We Plow the Fields.” The audience will also have the opportunity to sing a few of Hampton’s hymns! Huff’s solo organ selections by Calvin Hampton will be “Three pieces for Organ” – “Prayer and Alleluias,” “In Paradisum,” and “Pageant,” along with “In Praise of Humanity,” and Hampton’s “Voluntary on Engelberg.” CALVIN HAMPTON was born on December 31, 1938 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and died August 5, 1984, in Port Charlotte, Florida. He grew up in Ohio and studied at the Oberlin Conservatory with Fenner Douglas, and at Syracuse University with Arthur Poister.
