It is the place where both the next generation of actors, playwrights, and directors are developing their voices and veteran talents return to explore their artistic passions. While there is a multitude of Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theaters, producing hundreds of new works each season, most of these shows play just a few weeks and many are seen by only a small audience. The new series, Theater Close-Up , a unique collaboration between THIRTEEN and that large community of non-profit Off-Broadway theaters, will finally bring a diverse cross- section of those provocative plays to primetime and online audiences. The series – which will be hosted by acclaimed actress Sigourney Weaver -- premieres Thursday, October 2 at 9 p.m. on THIRTEEN with John Van Druten’s “London Wall” from the Mint Theater Company, dedicated to bringing worthy but neglected plays back to the stage, and continues on successive Thursdays at 10 p.m. with repeat broadcasts on Sunday evenings following Masterpiece . (WLIW21 will air the series on Monday evenings beginning October 6 at 10:30 p.m.) THIRTEEN is using its unrivaled expertise in producing national PBS arts programming – starting with such classic series as Theater in America , part of the award-winning series Great Performances and special limited series such as Stage on Screen -- to provide New Yorkers with unparalleled access to one of the City’s greatest underexposed cultural assets. -

This season, the series expands its geographic reach to include the Crossroads Theatre Company in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This season’s offerings will be hosted by Blythe Danner , Tony Award-winning star of stage, screen, and television. No stranger to public television, Danner memorably starred in the Great Performances productions of Chekhov’s The Seagull and Tennessee Williams’ Eccentricities of a Nightingale . Last October, THIRTEEN debuted nine plays on Theater Close-Up , encompassing works ranging from vintage playwright John Van Druten to today’s Richard Nelson, and drawing on the resources of some of New York’s finest theater companies. The second season of Theater Close-Up on THIRTEEN will continue to bring a diverse cross-section of those provocative plays to primetime and online audiences, premiering Thursday, October 1 at 9 p.m. with Rasheeda Speaking from The New Group , with Cynthia Nixon making her directorial debut. -

Frank Baum’s Tin Woodsman from Oz features life-size puppetry and original music Theater Close-Up -- the unique collaboration between THIRTEEN and the large community of New York City area non-profit Off-Broadway theaters -- will present The Woodsman , captured live on-stage, in THIRTEEN’s trademark “up-close” style. The Woodsman premieres Friday, September 2 at 9 p.m. on THIRTEEN, with an encore presentation on Sunday, September 4 at 1 a.m. The play will also air Sunday, September 4 at 10 p.m. on WLIW21. (The play will be available for streaming to BroadwayHD subscribers beginning September 6, 2016.) The Woodsman concluded its critically-lauded Off-Broadway run in May at New World Stages. The play opened to critical praise with Time Out New York describing it as “evocative and haunting” and naming it a Critic’s Pick; NBC New York called The Woodsman an “achingly beautiful play,” and The New York Times declared The Woodsman “breathtaking,” “abundantly beautiful” and a “spectacle infused with breath and light.” New York Magazine exclaimed, “Marvelous! Overflows with vivid imagery and emotion” and Rosie O’Donnell heralded the production on Twitter as “beautiful, stunning, haunting.” Based on the beloved writings of L. Frank Baum, The Woodsman , an imaginative retelling of the origins of Oz’s Tin Woodsman, is the story of the Tin Man, the woman he loved, and the witch that would stop at nothing to keep them apart. -

GEORGE FOSTER PEABODY AWARD WINNERS THE PEABODY AWARD The George Foster Peabody Award recognizes distinguished and meritorious public service by radio and television stations, networks, producing organizations and individuals. Reflecting excellence in quality rather than popularity or commercial success, the Peabody is the industry’s most competitive honor, with an average of about 25-35 winners chosen annually from more than 1,000 entries. In 1939, the National Association of Broadcasters formed a committee to recognize outstanding achievement in radio broadcasting. Committee member Lambdin Kay, manager of WSB in Atlanta, thought the award would be more credible if it were academically sanctioned and independently administered. He approached John E. Drewry of the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady School of Journalism, who enthusiastically endorsed the idea. The Peabody Award was established in 1940 with the school, now the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, as its permanent home. George Foster Peabody, born in 1852 in Columbus, Georgia, moved with his family to New York after the Civil War. Largely self-educated, Peabody became a successful banker and supporter of humanitarian causes, especially education. He helped finance a library, a forestry school, and a classroom building at the University of Georgia and was the school’s first non-resident trustee. In appreciation, the University awarded him an honorary degree and named the new broadcasting award for him. 1940 CBS Radio (First Radio Winner), Public Service by a Network. Press Contact: Harry Forbes 212-560-8027 or [email protected] WNET Contact: Harry Forbes 212-560-8027 or [email protected] Original Off-Broadway Production of Comedy Hit “Buyer & Cellar” Starring Michael Urie, from Westport Country Playhouse, on Theater Close-Up Monday, December 5 at 10 p.m. on THIRTEEN Theater Close-Up -- the unique collaboration between THIRTEEN and the large community of New York City area Off-Broadway and regional theaters – presents Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer & Cellar , captured live on-stage at Westport Country Playhouse, Monday, December 5 at 10 p.m. on THIRTEEN, with an encore presentation on Sunday, December 11 at 1 a.m. The play will also air Sunday December 25 at 10:30 p.m. on WLIW21. The play will be available for streaming beginning at the time of broadcast. Opening in June 1931, the Playhouse was founded as a try-out house for Broadway transfers, evolving into an established stop on the summer stock circuit. Following a major renovation in 2005, the Playhouse became a year-round, producing theater. Their production of Buyer & Cellar was originally produced by Manhattan’s Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. The one-man production stars Michael Urie as Alex More, an out-of-work L.A. actor. In a city overflowing with struggling actors waiting for their big break, Alex finds himself with one of the oddest jobs of all: working for a certain beloved lady of stage and screen named Barbra who has a mall in the basement of her Mailbu mansion. The estate’s basement space has been turned into a private gallery of shops, displaying the star‘s lifelong accumulation of rare collectibles. -
Digital Theatre: a “Live” and Mediated Art Form Expanding Perceptions of Body, Place, and Community
ABSTRACT Title of Document: DIGITAL THEATRE: A “LIVE” AND MEDIATED ART FORM EXPANDING PERCEPTIONS OF BODY, PLACE, AND COMMUNITY Nadja Linnine Masura, Ph.D., 2007 Directed By: Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Franklin J. Hildy, Department of Theatre Keywords: Digital Theatre, digital performance, dance technology, body, place, telematic, community, collaboration, agency, media, Internet, “live,” computer, theatre, cyberplace, cyberspace, multi-site performance, Access Grid, Virtual Reality, MIDI, Digital Performance Archive This work discusses Digital Theatre, a type of performance which utilizes both “live” actors and co-present audiences along with digital media to create a hybrid art form revitalizing theatre for contemporary audiences. This work surveys a wide range of digital performances (with “live” and digital elements, limited interactivity/participation and spoken words) and identifies the group collectively as Digital Theatre, an art form with the flexibility and reach of digital data and the sense of community found in “live” theatre. I offer performance examples from Mark Reaney, David Saltz, Troika Ranch, Gertrude Stein Repertory Theatre, Flying Karamazov Brothers, Talking Birds, Yacov Sharir, Studio Z, George Coates Performance Group, and ArtGrid. (The technologies utilized in performances include: video-conferencing, media projection, MIDI control, motion capture, VR animation, and AI). Rather than looking at these productions as isolated events, I identify them as a movement and link the use of digital techniques to continuing theatrical tradition of utilizing new technologies on the stage. The work ties many of the aesthetic choices explored in theatrical past by the likes of Piscator, Svoboda, Craig, and in Bauhaus and Futurist movements. While it retains the essential qualities of public human connection and imaginative thought central to theatre, Digital Theatre can cause theatrical roles to merge as it extends the performer’s body, expands our concept of place, and creates new models of global community. -

DISCUSSION GUIDE CONCEIVED, WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY Anna Deavere Smith LOS ANGELES DIRECTED BY Marc Levin I have been particularly interested in how the events in Los Angeles give us an opportunity to take stock of the changing racial landscape in America. Since the 1992 riots, our attitudes about race have shifted. As the character Twilight Bey indicates to us, we are in “limbo,” that time between day and night. Part of perceiving the light is seeing race as more than a black-and-white picture. Where do theater and film fit into this? Using the power of entertainment, spectacle, and dialogue, theater and film can participate in civic discourse and even influence national attitudes. At a time when our national conversation about race has become, to some extent, merely fragments of monologues, Twilight seeks to create a conversation from these fragments. It seeks to be a part of that conversation. Twilight is a document of what I, as an actress, heard in Los Angeles. In creating a “social drama,” I am not proposing a specific solution to social problems. I turn that over to activists, scholars, legislators, and most importantly, to you, the audience. As an actress, I am exploring the process of becoming something that I am not — the process of walking in someone else’s shoes. Laws and legislation can create a context in which we can work toward better relations with one another. Yet laws are limited in their ability to teach us how to move from an individual position to a larger community. We need to reach for the core of our humanity with all its glory and all its challenges.
