A. Migid Dr. Chand Midha ______________________________________ Date ii ABSTRACT This thesis examined the hiplife genre in Ghana and explored the various genres that led to the discovery of hiplife. The purpose of this research was to offer an analysis of the hiplife movement in Ghana as a contributor to youth empowerment applying new forms of entertainment strategies, artist management, and technology enhancement that could broaden the awareness of hiplife and create economic opportunities for artists. This thesis also discussed the event management company, The Afro Giants (tAG), which was created to groom, manage, record musicians, and produce shows around the world. Information for this thesis was gathered from personal contact with industry insiders from most of the entertainment houses, entertainment magazines, and record labels in Ghana. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A special thanks to God for giving me life and my ancestors who passed the touch to me. I would like to express my special appreciation to my thesis committee members, Christopher Hariasz, Adel Migid and, especially, my thesis supervisor, James Slowiak, for his excellent guidance, care, patience, and for providing a good atmosphere for doing this research. -

1 Studio Improv As Compositional Process Through Case Studies of Ghanaian Hiplife and Afrobeats
Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation Vol 10, No 2 Studio Improv as Compositional Process Through Case Studies of Ghanaian Hiplife and Afrobeats Leila Adu-Gilmore Introduction Drawing on interviews and an analysis of music by two Accra-based producers, Appietus (Appiah Dankwa, b. 1977) and DJ Breezy (Patrick Sika-Nartey, b. 1990), I will show how formal and informal education networks and geographic location shape musical production in Accra. Appietus’ richly harmonic music is best approached through the tradition of highlife music, so I will give a brief history of Ghanaian musical styles of the past seven decades, from the pre-independence period to the emergence of electronic music in the 1980s. A series of transcriptions will serve to focus my discussion of Appietus’ music. In analyzing DJ Breezy’s timbrally precise minimalist music, I focus on his number one single, ‘Tonga’ (2014), using ecological acoustics, a form of critical analysis that looks at how music is perceived in space. These producers’ music demonstrates that, as in many other forms of non-notated music, the definitions of the words ‘composition’ and ‘improvisation’ continuously disrupt each other. This blurring of the creative processes of improvisation and composition is highlighted in the studio, where hardware and software serve as both performative and compositional instruments. Although Black music tends to be read through an ethnographic lens focused on rhythm, text and culture, I hope to show that the blending of music analysis and on-site interviews suggests new methodological frameworks on its study. Pre-Independence to Electronic “Ghana Music” Contemporary Ghanaian music producers are creating a combination of styles that have their roots in music from overseas and in Ghanaian highlife, which is itself a musical hybrid. -

Autotuned Africa (Info)
AUTO-TUNED AFRICA VOL. 1 WONDERFUL WARBLES Auto-Tune has bad press among the so-called "organic music" lovers, as proven by the amount of friends who cringed when I mentioned I was working on this compilation! Cher’s metallic shrieks on 1998’s "Believe" seem to have left some scars. From the T-Pain swagger era to Lady Gaga’s stadium-sized antics, up to today’s robotic-sounding trappers, the overuse of this audio processor has become one of the standards of mainstream pop music. Long used behind the scenes as a barely noticeable and almost shameful pitch/time corrector, it is now played for effect, loudly and proudly distorting many voices on FM radio. As a result, it has become synonymous with "bad taste" and "fake," many listeners believing that it is employed as an easy trick to cover a lack of musical talent. This first mixtape is an attempt at showing the incredible beauty and variety of music featuring Auto-Tune manipulations. Let’s turn our ears away for a moment from the dominant musical output from the Western world, and focus on the plethora of unfairly overlooked African songs. Auto-Tune has indeed democratized access to music making and quickly become hybridized and assimilated into the popular African music tradition, particularly in North Africa. After digging for sonic gold for days and nights, lending a curious and attentive ear to these songs, I remain convinced that all the singers featured here can actually sing. The ill-reputed software is actually often employed not as a quick fix to patch up mistakes made by self-conscious amateurs, but as a purposeful aesthetic flourish, a bold artistic choice even.
