9 The Norfolk Keel was the predecessor of the Norfolk Wherry as a trading boat on the Broadland waterways, seen mainly during the 17 th & 18 th centuries. There were still a few trading in the 1870’s whilst being replaced by the Wherry. The last Norfolk Keel, thought to be called “DEE DAR”, was in regular trade from Norwich, survived until the 1890’s. Then derelict she was sunk in the , between Gardens and Whitlingham, to mark the channel. She was rescued in 1912, for a short period by staff of the Science Museum, South Kensington, who recorded details and dimensions for the construction of an accurate display model. This sole survivor appears to have had a small transom stern although later types were double-ended. The cabin was in the fore part of the craft rather than the stern, while the cargo space was without covering hatches. The single mast, carrying a large sail, was amidships, stepped in a tabernacle but also secured by crosswise deck beams. Most Norfolk A Norfolk Keel involved in collecting Reed by Harry Clow keels were much stronger but far less elegant than the Norfolk Wherries and were likely to have been much slower under sail. The hull was of clinker build and had an average length of 54 feet with a 14 foot beam. The depth was 4 feet, drawing slightly less than 4 feet of water. Cargo capacity was between 30 and 40 tons" Having been laid to rest the valuable wreck was relocated in 1984 The Norfolk Keel Trust, led by marine archaeologists, began the task of cleaning the remains. In September 1984 she was moved to Corporation Wharf in Norwich. Following several moves and complications within the trust, plans for conservation and a possible rebuild or display fell through. Fortunately, “Dee Dar” was recorded for posterity and models have been made of her. The Museum of the Broads tried to secure a token piece of the keel, but was unsuccessful. Although decayed and incomplete, the surviving remains were thought to be laid out safely and stored at Whitlingham Hall Barns, near Norwich. In 2012 Whitlingham Barns underwent major redevelopment and the irreplaceable remains of the keel were piled into a heap and set fire to. It was sad that someone short-sightedly, deliberately burnt the remains of the keel, not recognising her historic value.

“Dee Dar” now no longer exists but positive moves are being made to launch a new keel project.

13 The Hobbit NORTH NORFOLK COMMUNITY An Unexpected Journey TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION NWACTA changes its name . It was in 1999 that the community transport operation Friday 26 tthhth April based in North Walsham to serve sections of North East Norfolk was created, and its full title was North Walsham Area Community Transport Association (NWACTA). In the course of the last dozen years our operations have extended into a much wider area. It was in 2004 that our sister organization, based in Holt, had to cease operations and NWACTA took on the provision of their services. In subsequent years, we have also taken over the community transport provided by other organizations that were unable to continue. We are currently exploring how to further extend the area we serve, particularly in a westerly direction. It means that for some time we could more accurately have been described as the North Norfolk Community Transport Association, which is the title that the Trustees have now adopted. One reason for informing you about the change of name now is that Waitrose have very kindly agreed that in April we will be one of the 3 charities that it will support. (Waitrose is a popular destination for some of our passengers.) We would be delighted and grateful if your readers would put their green discs in the container labelled North Norfolk Community Transport Association. We are in the process of improving our fleet. We have just taken on 2 new vehicles, a Mercedes 16 seater mini-bus and a Kia Seconda mpv (generously financed by Victory Housing some of whose tenants travel with us) which we can use when a small vehicle is more suitable than a mini-bus. Both are fully accessible. We would like to remind readers that we provide a range of services – our dial-a-bus services are door-to-door and take people to the various market towns; we provide group transport for charity and community organisations to take their members to meetings or on excursions; we have a car service to take people to medical appointments both to hospitals and to doctors’ surgeries and for other medical purposes. To learn more, access our new web-site at www.northnorfolkcommunitytransport.co.uk, on which you can also make bookings if you wish. Most people still prefer to email us at [email protected] or phone us Matey set sail from Dartmouth on the same on either 01263 839009 or 01692 journey as the Pilgrim fathers to JAMESTOWN. 14 Then & Now The editors are creating a gallery of pictures of the Marlpit area. Here we have two pictures kindly given for our archives by Geoff Williams of Coltishall.

The picture on the left shows The Wesleyan Chapel Band, relatives and friends about to depart on their annual Sunday School outing to Mundesley in 1913.

The picture on the right shows the premises of Robert Hook who was a general Horticultural builder, Carpenter, Wheelwright and hot-water engineer, a real jack-of-all-trades. Dated 1905. We would be pleased to receive your pictures of “Then and Now” of your own homes or local area - Not just views but people around the area too. It would be helpful if you could include a date and a little detail of were the picture was taken. Please send your photographs to [email protected] . Alternatively post ( with return address) in the Marlpit boxes at the Post Office, Chemist or Farm to Fork and Fish.

Heather Boulter has retired from working at Coltishall Post Office after 23 years continuous service. Heather, who lives in Horstead, started working here in 1990 when Sandy Rose was Sub postmistress and was our longest serving employee. Having paid out pensions to thousands of people over the years, she has now decided to visit us from the other side of the counter to collect her own Photo Supplied with article pension. We shall miss Heather greatly, not least because she seems to know everyone in the village on first name terms! However we have been very lucky to secure the services of Ken Bacon to take over in the Post Office. Ken was formerly sub postmaster at his own village shop in Felmingham before moving to Coltishall two years ago. For the last year he has been working at the Post Office in Roys at Magdalen Street, so is well up to date with all the latest Post Office services. Heather has been a tremendous asset to the Coltishall and Horstead community and I'm sure will be missed by our staff and customers alike. Steve Haines.
