As the variety of media exhibition platforms expands and as discourse about films permeates a greater number of communication media, the use of generic terms has never been more multiform or observable. Fundamental problems in the very conception of film genre have yet to be addressed adequately, and film genre study has carried on despite its untenable theoretical footing. Synthesizing pragmatic genre theory, constructivist film theory, Bourdieusian fan studies, and rhetorical genre studies, the dissertation aims to work through the radical implications of pragmatic genre theory and account for genres role in interpretation, evaluation, and rhetorical framing as part of broader, recurring social activities. This model rejects textualist and realist foundations for film genre; only pragmatic genre use can serve as a foundation for understanding film genres. From this perspective, the concept of genre is reconstructed according to its interpretive and rhetorical functions rather than a priori assumptions about the text or transtextual structures. -

NOTES, DOCUMENTS, REVIEW ARTICLES, OPINION The Invention of Genres1 ANNE FREADMAN The decision to discuss these books together arose from a personal compulsion, not to say obsession, but brings with it a deeply regrettable consequence. My obsession is with the nature of genre, with its importance and with what I can learn about genre and its theorising from studies of particular genres. I have therefore read them as if they participate in the genre of genre theory, taking little account of their other, perhaps principal, concerns, with philosophical topics (Cavell) and with the politics of cultural participation (Chambers), even with their local topics — marriage in modernity, the genderedness of skepticism (Cavell), the culture of AIDS and the practices of subjectivity (Chambers). The seriousness of this omission is evident when we consider that for each of these humblingly brilliant books, the postulate of genre is germane to the issues they open up. Just how this is so carries implications for all the vexed issues in genre theory. So — but — these vexed issues will override my discussion of the topics raised by these authors, making the latter secondary. The study employs a digital humanities method (dependent on digitally facilitated data analysis), conducting descriptive discourse analysis on collected online discussions from fan spaces concerning the fantasy genre and matters related to fantasy.
