2015_RJR_Baseball.indd 5 3/31/15 3:34 PM 2015 RJR Demon Season Outlook

Flashback to 2014…the Reynolds Demon baseballers won 22 games, a CPC title, and advanced to the 4th round of the state playoffs, all the while placing 6 players on the All-Conference list and one All-State selection!! AND…Coach Welch expects “at least” a repeat performance in 2015! “Based on the player participation, the energy, and dedication in my BOOTCAMP this off-season, I see no reason why my 2015 squad should not be a force in the North Carolina 4-A race to the state title.

ON THE BUMP The Reynolds 2015 pitching staff should be strong, talented, and battle tested. Coach Welch returns 17 wins, 150+ IP, and 167 to the mound in 2015. The RJR staff will be senior heavy: Logan Welch(10-0 with 97 strikeouts in 2014), Robby Casey(1.71 ERA in 53.33 IP in 2014), Ben Casstevens(.257 opponent BA in 2014), Sam Doughton(2.63 ERA in 2014), and junior Bo Kenan(7 appearances in 2014). “My pitching staff is full of bulldogs! They are talented, crafty, and fearless on the mound. Every time I send any of them to the mound, I expect immediate outs.” If the 2015 Demon ARMS stay healthy, the 22 win performance of 2014 should be surpassed and titles will be won!

DEMON LEATHER The 2015 Reynolds need to fill the strike zone up and make hitters put the ball in play because the Demon “leather” will be TIGHT! Athleticism, speed, quality arms, and versatility will blanket the Reynolds diamond this season. We will have guys playing 1-2-3 positions in a single game,.…3@SS,4@2B,4@3B,4@1B,7OF,3@C…25 players??? Nope, just 13, but these kids are skilled and can play anywhere I ask them to play.” New faces all over diamond, but Coach Welch believes same results…no errors and very few runs.

SWINGING THE HAMMER The 2015 Reynolds offense needs to really step it up. 2014 graduated the likes of career BA leader- Drew Fisch, career doubles leader-Shane Sullivan, and career SB leader Ty Andrus …but Coach Welch sees the 2015 squad as very capable of scoring a lot of runs. Maturity, experience, speed, and strength are characteristics of the Demon offense in 2015. “We have power guys, batting avg. guys, skilled bunters, singles guys and gap guys…but most importantly, we do not strike out, we draw a lot of walks, and we can really execute the bunt…all of which put pressure on defenses.” The RJR hitters will continue their history as very aggressive at the plate and are focused on doing whatever is necessary to win a lot of ball games.

OVERALL “One coach asked me before the season if we were ready for the “BULLS EYE” on our backs? I guess he was saying we are expected win a lot of games and should see everyone’s best?? My response is this…we must get better every day in practice…I am an intense practice guy, and practice tells everything. If this squad comes focused for practice, and my staff and I do what we are supposed to do at practice, we will compete, and that is all I can ask.”

2015_RJR_Baseball.indd 6 3/31/15 3:34 PM 2015 Varsity Team Coach’s Notes

#19 ROBBY CASEY—SENIOR—2 YR LETTERMAN—UNCW COMMIT All-Conference selection in 2014… Expectations are soaring for Casey and those high goals are more than achievable. Casey was dominant on the mound in 2014 with a 1.71 ERA in 53+ IP, 52 strikeouts and opponent. BA was .197! Casey will definitely pitch for the Demons, but Coach Welch also needs run production from Casey as he will be in the middle of the RJR batting order. “RC needs to pound the strike zone with his 3 college level pitches and pound balls into the gaps!!” If the Demons 6’8” RHP can do what he is capable of, Casey, will help lead the Reynolds 2015 baseball team to another fantastic and exciting year.

#25 BEN CASSTEVENS—SENIOR—2 YR LETTERMAN His teammates call him “Franchise” and Coach Welch needs Casstevens nickname to come true. Casstevens has a “rubber arm” and has been tagged the Demon closer for 2015. “Ben throws 6 different pitches with 2-3 arm angle changes and he throws them all with complete confidence…the closer I need!” “Franchise” must stay healthy and embrace his new role. In doing so, Casstevens will baffle opposing hitters and help the Demons repeat as CPC champs!

#15 BEN COOK—SENIOR—4 YR LETTERMAN Ben Cook has exploded offensively and Coach Welch has a big grin on his face. “Cookie mashed the baseball during the 2014 playoffs, summer of 2014 and the fall of 2014. And we expect more of the same in 2015.” Cook must help fill the large offensive void left by the 2014 grads and continue the traditional superb play of RJR centerfielders. “Cookie” may also toe the rubber a bit in 2015??” Cook is capable of tremendous defense and big offensive numbers and the Demons look to him for both as they start their journey toward the state title.

#17 SAM DOUGHTON—SENIOR—2 YR LETTERMAN “Sam is a very determined and focused player. He played a vital role in the success of the 2014 season. He did not get a lot of game time innings but he did get valuable experience, and most importantly, he challenged the Demon hitters with his crafty live pitching during almost every practice.” Doughton(a Morehead Scholar semifinalist) is a student of the game and has gotten bigger and stronger for his senior season. Doughton has also refined his pitching and hitting and showed great promise during fall ball. The Demons need to follow Doughton’s lead in desire and focus every day. If they do this, they will mold themselves into a state contender!

#2 STEPHEN GREENE—SENIOR—4 YR LETTERMAN—UNCG COMMIT 2014 All-Conference catcher…Greene is the backbone and workhorse of the RJR defense as he caught 25 of 28 games in 2014 and his bat exploded to the tune of .346 BA during the pitching dominated CPC. “My expectations for Stephen are through the roof. He needs to be a human backstop, control my pitching staff with confidence and calmness, control the running game, and mash doubles into the gaps…that’s all!!!” Greene is a determining factor deciding whether the 2015 Demons are a contender or just a pretender in the 4A state title race.

#8 BOBBY SCANLON—SENIOR—2 YR LETTERMAN Scanlon showed tremendous promise in 2014…so much so that Coach Welch decided at the end of 2014, that Scanlon would most likely be the 2015 second baseman as long as he continued to improve through the fall and summer. “Bobby showed hand quickness and natural 2B footwork. He has a great opportunity to play there, and he is an excellent outfielder and can also catch. ” Scanlon’s versatility will earn him a lot of playing time for Coach Welch and if he controls the bat, Scanlon will be play a very substantial role in the Reynold‘s baseball 2015 campaign.

#7 LOGAN WELCH—SENIOR—4 YR LETTERMAN—UNC COMMIT 2014 All-State and 2-time All-Conference selection, Welch is the ACE of the talented Demon pitching staff. Welch heads into the 2015 season with tremendous opportunities. “Logan has a chance to set every RJR pitching record covering the last 2 decades… but “those are just numbers…Logan says he wants a state championship ring for the 2015 Demons!” To get that ring, Welch(10-0 in 2014, 97 strikeouts and 1.58 ERA) must lead the Demons with dominating pitching and a highly productive bat at the plate. Welch, along with the others Demon seniors, must lead Coach Welch’s squad as a unit if they are to capture the first state title in RJR baseball history.

2015_RJR_Baseball.indd 7 3/31/15 3:34 PM 2015 Varsity Team Coach’s Notes

#5 MASON BRIGGS—JUNIOR—1ST YR ON VARSITY Briggs joins the 2015 squad after a MVP season on the Demon JV in 2014. “Mason made a huge talent and strength jump from 2013 to 2014. I hope to see another jump this year.” Briggs is very versatile and will challenge for playing time in both the outfield and the infield. Briggs can also catch and works tremendously hard. If Briggs can step up to the varsity skill level quickly, he will find himself helping the Demons defend their CPC championship possibly on an everyday basis.

#10 JACKSON CARTER—JNUNIOR—1ST YR ON VARSITY Carter brings great work ethic and attention to detail to the 2015 Reynolds squad. “Jackson is a very hard worker and is focused on improving his skills both offensively and defensively.” Carter had arm problems in 2014 but has fully recovered. He must be a student of the game and catch up to the speed of varsity baseball by improving each day in practice and taking advantage of any opportunity he earns. 2015 holds many opportunities for Carter and the Demons as they hope to take that next step and win a state championship.

#23 BO KENAN—JUNIOR—2YR LETTERMAN Kenan got his feet wet in 2014 with 1 win and 7 appearances. “With Bo’s dedication to the weight room and his improved bat and arm strength, I expect Bo to really challenge for a lot of playing time.” Kenan’s real playing time will be determined by his consistency at the plate and on the mound. Kenan has nasty natural movement and has developed 5 pitches from 2 arm angles. Coach Welch would like nothing more than to see Kenan be a strike monster and a consistent bat earning him playing time as the Demons try to top the 22 wins of 2014.

#11 LANEY ORR—JUNIOR—3 YR LETTERMAN—UNC COMMIT Coach Welch hopes 2015 is a breakout year for Orr. “Laney is a freak athlete with unlimited potential. If he stays healthy, he will help us in every way.” Orr has power, speed, arm strength, and defensive skills that put him into a category with only a few high school players. The Demons need Orr 100% healthy to truly make a run at the 4A state title.

#4 JAKE LANG—SOPHOMORE—2 YR LETTERMAN Lang is the speediest of the Demons and gained great experience his freshmen year on the varsity. “Jake has excellent speed and competes like crazy at the plate. If he takes what he learned last year and applies it, he could very well be a 3 year starter for me.” Coach Welch would like nothing more than to see Lang use his athleticism and learned baseball skills to help the Reynolds baseballers dominate all Demon opponents in their 2015 season.

#9 JAVIER SOCORRO—SOPHOMORE—1ST YR ON VARSITY Socorro joins the 2015 Demons with a lot of natural skill. “Javier can throw, run, hit and can play various positions, including catcher…but he needs polish and must really catch on quickly to the quality and speed of varsity baseball. When this happen, Javier has a chance to be very good for the Demons.” Socorro has a very good chance to see a lot of playing time in 2015, and in the near future be a part of the Demon train headed for that big ring!
