the voice page 6 page 7 the voice TIME TO SPRING FORWARD After the long winter months, it’s time to look forward. The Spring flowers are in bloom and the days are becoming longer. The first Spring event that comes to mind is Easter. Along with the special Church and Chapel services, in the past other events took place in the village. The Band of Hope Union held an Easter musical festival at the Baptist Chapel in 1904. It may not be quite clear in the photograph of the poster, but it seems that people who met the choir regulations could come and join. The criteria was that: - • Every singer must be a ‘Band of Hope’ member and over 10 years of age. • Six practices must be arranged by each society taking part and every member of the choir must attend at least four practices and two combined rehearsals before 5th April 1904. • The words must be committed to memory. The poster does not tell us what musical delights are in store and may be just an advert to recruit choir members. We have this photograph on our archive of an Easter Fair. We think it was held at the Church Hall. Looking at the coats and hats it may have taken place in the 1950’s. A well-attended occasion with a myriad of items to buy including pork pie, fairy cakes, bags of sugar and Scott’s porridge oats. On the right of the picture it seems there has been a ‘bake off’ style competition in the fruit cake category; you can see some cut in half to judge the quality to find the winner. These are two events that we have information about on the archive. Over the years there must have been other activities that took place around Easter. Any information would be very welcome.

After a few years the clock face fell down in a heap of oak boards and copper sheet. We kept it in store for some time but eventually sent the copper for scrap; these were years of real austerity and we had found no way to use the stables. It was in 1974 that we finally started to convert the rooms into craft workshops, and the high platform came down when the granary became a gallery. For the next forty years the clock was forgotten. It was the chance reading of an old account which brought the subject to mind again. It remained to fit the hands and connect to an electric mechanism mounted on the gallery wall. The work will transform the building into a modern space with food stalls and an eating area, as well as traditional market stalls, pop-up traders and space for events. Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “We’re very excited to see work progressing to create Newmarket and bring Coalville’s market into the heart of the town. This is part of our regeneration work for Coalville – moving the market and creating a modern, vibrant space that will be exciting for shoppers and traders alike. We appreciate that there will be some disruption while the work is ongoing and we thank people for their patience during this time.” Newmarket is expected to open in 2020, with applications now open for new traders to take stalls.
