  • Wally Koppisch: Great Expectations
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 23, No. 6 (2001) Wally Koppisch: Great Expectations by Jeffrey Miller Walter Koppisch was a local hero. While playing high school ball at Masten Park High--now City Honors-- in Buffalo, he led his team to three consecutive Harvard Cup championships. He went on to star at Columbia University, where he captained the Lions for three seasons--playing in a backfield which also featured future New York Yankee immortal Lou Gehrig--and was selected to Walter Camp’s All-America squad in 1924. So when it was announced in September 1925 that Koppisch would be returning to Buffalo to coach--at 23 years of age, making him one of the youngest head coaches in league history-- and play for the Bisons, local sports enthusiasts were indeed delighted. But Koppisch’s signing almost didn’t happened. The New York Giants, a new N.F.L franchise in 1925, were seeking a big name around which they could build a team, and Walter’s was the top name on their list. Koppisch’s four brilliant years at New York- based Columbia gave him name recognition and the Giants instant credibility in the league. However, according to Giants historian Dr. Harry March, the Gothamites called off their pursuit at the request of the Buffalo Bisons. As March later recounted in his book, Pro Football--Its Ups and Downs: Koppisch was a distinct asset in New York by reason of his four years at Columbia, but when the Buffalo management came to us and pleaded that he would be the making of the Buffalo team-- his home town--we turned Santa Claus and let them have him to manage, play, captain, and coach.

  • Hinkey Haines: the Giants' First Superstar
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 4, No. 2 (1982) HINKEY HAINES: THE GIANTS' FIRST SUPERSTAR By C.C. Staph Oh Hinkey Haines, oh Hinkey Haines! The New York Giants' football brains. He never loses, always gains. Oh Hinkey Haines, oh Hinkey Haines! -- anonymous New York sportswriter, 1926 Hinkey Haines was one of those running backs who blaze across the NFL sky for only a short time, yet burn so brightly that they are honored long after their last touchdown. Gale Sayers is a recent example; George McAfee was another. Haines completed his playing career before the league began keeping statistics. As a consequence, he is remembered not for huge yardage totals but for brilliant individual performances. During his short but spectacular career, he put together enough outstanding plays to be ranked with Grange, Driscoll, and Nevers as one of the great runners of his time. He was a phenomenal breakaway runner, famous for his speed. Bob Folwell, the New York Giants' first coach, insisted that in his twenty years of coaching he had never seen a faster man on the gridiron than Haines. If he were playing today, he would almost surely be turned into a wide receiver. Even in those rather pass-sparse days, Hinkey scored several of his most spectacular touchdowns on passes. On punt and kickoff returns, he was deadly. He joined the Giants in 1925 at the comparatively ripe age of 26. For four years, he was the toast of New York. He put in one more season with the Staten Island Stapletons and then retired. He was lured back in 1931 as player-coach of the Stapes, but, at 32, he played only sparingly.

  • Statistical Leaders of the ‘20S
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 14, No. 2 (1992) Statistical Leaders of the ‘20s By Bob GIll Probably the most ambitious undertaking in football research was David Neft’s effort to re-create statistics from contemporary newspaper accounts for 1920-31, the years before the NFL started to keep its own records. Though in a sense the attempt had to fail, since complete and official stats are impossible, the results of his tireless work provide the best picture yet of the NFL’s formative years. Since the stats Neft obtained are far from complete, except for scoring records, he refrained from printing yearly leaders for 1920-31. But it seems a shame not to have such a list, incomplete though it may be. Of course, it’s tough to pinpoint a single leader each year; so what follows is my tabulation of the top five, or thereabouts, in passing, rushing and receiving for each season, based on the best information available – the stats printed in Pro Football: The Early Years and Neft’s new hardback edition, The Football Encyclopedia. These stats can be misleading, because one man’s yardage total will be based on, say, five complete games and four incomplete, while another’s might cover just 10 incomplete games (i.e., games for which no play-by-play accounts were found). And then some teams, like Rock Island, Green Bay, Pottsville and Staten Island, often have complete stats, based on play-by-plays for every game of a season. I’ll try to mention variations like that in discussing each year’s leaders – for one thing, “complete” totals will be printed in boldface.

  • 23 Guys with Hobbies
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 9, No. 7 (1987) 23 GUYS WITH HOBBIES By L. Robert Davids The decision by Bo Jackson, who played hit-or-miss baseball for the Kansas City Royals this summer, to play with the Los Angeles Raiders this fall, has been greeted with some skepticism. Well, it has been many years since an athlete has attempted this dual role in the same year. The last time was in 1954 when Vic Janowicz, the only other Heisman Trophy winner to play major league baseball, was a substitute third baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He batted only .151 in 41 games. He performed better as a halfback for the Washington Redskins, but certainly did not star that year. Of the approximately 60 athletes who played both major league baseball and football since 1920, a surprising 23 did it in the same year. Almost all of these multiple efforts were made in the early decades when the baseball and football seasons did not overlap as much as they do now. Also, several of the players made only token appearances in one of the sports, usually baseball. Tom Whelan and Red Smith played in only one game each, Jahn Scalzi in two, and John Mohardt in five. However, the latter had only one official at bat and collected a hit for a "lifetime" 1000 average! Only one or two players performed reasonably well in both sports the same year. In 1926, Garland "Gob" Buckeye, the 260-pound southpaw hurler for the Cleveland Indians, had a fine 3.10 ERA in 166 innings in that heavy-hitting season.

  • Le Roy Butler Biography
LE ROY BUTLER BIOGRAPHY LeRoy Butler is a former American football strong safety who played his entire career with the Green Bay Packers (1990-2001). Born on July 19, 1968, Butler spent his childhood in Jacksonville, Florida. His parents separated when he was a toddler, and his mother, Eunice, supported Butler and his four siblings by working first as a secretary and later as a nurse. The family lived in a small apartment in the crime-infested Blodgett Homes housing project on Jacksonville’s west side. As a child, Butler’s problems went beyond poverty and crime. He was born so pigeon-toed that doctors had to break bones in both of his feet when he was only eight months to correct the problem. Walking was a major challenge for Butler, who spent much of his early youth in a wheelchair. Between the ages of six and eight, he was had to wear leg braces. He spent much of his early childhood gazing out the window watching neighborhood children play kickball—something he could not even imagine doing. At the time, doctors predicted that Butler would be lucky if he ever walked normally. Certainly, the notion of becoming a professional athlete was in his foreseeable future. As fate would have it, when he was eight years old Butler discovered he no longer needed his leg braces— quite by accident. When his older sister, raced out of the apartment one day, she inadvertently knocked Butler out of his wheelchair, sending his leg braces flying as well. Picking himself up, Butler discovered that he could not only walk normally, but he could also run pretty well.

The thrills and fascinations of his athletic exploits were chronicled by the mass media beginning in 1917 through the 1920s in a way that addressed the central themes of the mythic Great American Novel. Killinger’s personal and public life matched the cultural medley that defined the nation in the first quarter of the twentieth-century. His life plays outs as if it were a Horatio Alger novel, as the anxieties over turn-of-the- century immigration and urbanization, the uncertainty of commercializing formerly amateur sports, social unrest that challenged the status quo, and the resiliency of the individual confronting challenges of World War I, sport, and social alienation.
