Fifteen of his losses have come against some of the top NCAA I wrestling programs in the Country (Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Northern Iowa). Since taking over the MSU wrestling program in 1993-94, Makovsky’s teams have never finished lower than 17th at the NCAA tournament. Minnesota State wrestling teams have had only four head coaches in 45 years of competition. Rummy Macias was MSU’s first head coach when the grapplers first took to the mat for the Mavericks in 1950. Makovsky Rushing Macias Macias coached until 1988, taking a one-year leave of absence during the 1980-81 campaign where Chris Sones took over for the season. Macias handed the reins over to Gary Rushing in 1988 and Rushing guided the squad until 1993 when he accepted a full-time position as an instructor at MSU. Present head coach Jim Makovsky took over the coaching duties in 1993, and as only the fourth coach in team history, has continued MSU’s winning tradition.
