University Archives - Moving Image Collection This directory lists reproductions of films and videos depicting people, places and events associated with the history of the University of Florida. Each title is linked to a finding-aid that describes the production's content. Video productions of the University of Florida News and Public Affairs office are listed in a separate directory. Productions are stored in a variety of formats for duplication and viewing purposes. For viewing purposes in the Special Collections Research Room, films are available in either VHS or DVD. Futch: <i>Seminole History: A Pictorial History of Florida State Univers What is missing? There are only a handful of photographs of blacks, Conchs, Indians and poor whites. Tourists viewed these people as quaint and occasionally photographed them. But the commercial photographers included here do not record their histories. Another sad side of Florida tourism is the destruction of the natural environment. During the 1880s one riverboat traveler remarked, “From the lofty decks of the steamers a great deal is seen, but every moment one is hurried ruthlessly away from some spot where there is every temptation to linger, and then left to while away hours at some landing where preceding crowds have gathered every flower, and alarmed every bird with pistols and parasols” (p. 57). Worse than these Victorian travelers were hunters. -

The African American–led Civil Rights Movement challenged discrimination in higher education at a time when state and federal government leaders saw strengthening public higher education as necessary for future economic growth and development. -

It is an honor to be here to provide a brief overview of the history of governance within the University of South Florida System, from our institution’s establishment in 1956 to recent years. CURRENT VIEWS (3) Throughout its history, the University of South Florida has served as a pioneer and leader in our rapidly evolving state. As Russell M. Cooper and Margaret B. Fisher noted in their 1982 history of our institution, the University of South Florida was the first university of its kind to be conceived, designed, and constructed from scratch in the 20th century.1 OLD MAP It is hard to believe, but in the year 1900, Florida had a population of less than 530,000, by far the smallest of any Southern state. At that time, Florida was the only state east of the Mississippi to lack a comprehensive system of public higher education. PRE‐BUCKMAN There were a few seminaries and small institutions—many of them could have fit in this room—but it was not until the passage of the 1905 Buckman Act (named for Senator Henry Holland Buckman), BROWARD that Florida truly had a system of higher learning. -
