The interest of projective geometry arises in several visual comput- ing domains, in particular computer vision modelling and computer graphics. It provides a mathematical formalism to describe the geometry of cameras and the associated transformations, hence enabling the design of computational ap- proaches that manipulates 2D projections of 3D objects. In that respect, a fundamental aspect is the fact that objects at infinity can be represented and manipulated with projective geometry and this in contrast to the Euclidean geometry. ON ULRICH BUNDLES ON PROJECTIVE BUNDLES ANDREAS HOCHENEGGER Abstract. In this article, the existence of Ulrich bundles on projective bundles P(E) → X is discussed. In the case, that the base variety X is a curve or surface, a close relationship between Ulrich bundles on X and those on P(E) is established for specific polarisations. This yields the existence of Ulrich bundles on a wide range of projective bundles over curves and some surfaces. 1. Introduction Given a smooth projective variety X, polarised by a very ample divisor A, let i: X ֒→ PN be the associated closed embedding. A locally free sheaf F on X is called Ulrich bundle (with respect to A) if and only if it satisfies one of the following conditions: • There is a linear resolution of F: ⊕bc ⊕bc−1 ⊕b0 0 → OPN (−c) → OPN (−c + 1) →···→OPN → i∗F → 0, where c is the codimension of X in PN . • The cohomology H•(X, F(−pA)) vanishes for 1 ≤ p ≤ dim(X). • For any finite linear projection π : X → Pdim(X), the locally free sheaf π∗F splits into a direct sum of OPdim(X) . Actually, by [18], these three conditions are equivalent. One guiding question about Ulrich bundles is whether a given variety admits an Ulrich bundle of low rank. The existence of such a locally free sheaf has surprisingly strong implications about the geometry of the variety, see the excellent surveys [6, 14]. Given a projective bundle π : P(E) → X, this article deals with the ques- tion, what is the relation between Ulrich bundles on the base X and those on P(E)? Introduction One of the goals of topology is to classify the topological spaces up to some equiva- lence relations, e.g., homeomorphic equivalence and homotopy equivalence (for algebraic topology). In algebraic topology, most of the time we will restrict to spaces which are homotopy equivalent to CW complexes. We have learned several algebraic invariants such as fundamental groups, homology groups, cohomology groups and cohomology rings. Using these algebraic invariants, we can seperate two non-homotopy equivalent spaces. Another powerful algebraic invariants are the higher homotopy groups. Whitehead the- orem shows that the functor of homotopy theory are power enough to determine when two CW complex are homotopy equivalent. A rational coefficient version of the homotopy theory has its own techniques and advan- tages: 1. fruitful algebraic structures. 2. easy to calculate. RATIONAL HOMOTOPY THEORY 3 2. AN INTRODUCTION TO COMPLEX ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY WITH EMPHASIS ON THE THEORY OF SURFACES By Chris Peters Mathematisch Instituut der Rijksuniversiteit Leiden and Institut Fourier Grenoble i Preface These notes are based on courses given in the fall of 1992 at the University of Leiden and in the spring of 1993 at the University of Grenoble. These courses were meant to elucidate the Mori point of view on classification theory of algebraic surfaces as briefly alluded to in [P]. The material presented here consists of a more or less self-contained advanced course in complex algebraic geometry presupposing only some familiarity with the theory of algebraic curves or Riemann surfaces. But the goal, as in the lectures, is to understand the Enriques classification of surfaces from the point of view of Mori-theory. In my opininion any serious student in algebraic geometry should be acquainted as soon as possible with the yoga of coherent sheaves and so, after recalling the basic concepts in algebraic geometry, I have treated sheaves and their cohomology theory. This part culminated in Serre’s theorems about coherent sheaves on projective space. Having mastered these tools, the student can really start with surface theory, in particular with intersection theory of divisors on surfaces. The treatment given is algebraic, but the relation with the topological intersection theory is commented on briefly. A fuller discussion can be found in Appendix 2. Intersection theory then is applied immediately to rational surfaces. A basic tool from the modern point of view is Mori’s rationality theorem. The treatment for surfaces is elementary and I borrowed it from [Wi]. -

Is spacetime as physical as is space? Mayeul Arminjon Univ. Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, Grenoble INP, 3SR, F-38000 Grenoble, France Abstract Two questions are investigated by looking successively at classical me- chanics, special relativity, and relativistic gravity: first, how is space re- lated with spacetime? The proposed answer is that each given reference fluid, that is a congruence of reference trajectories, defines a physical space. The points of that space are formally defined to be the world lines of the congruence. That space can be endowed with a natural structure of 3-D differentiable manifold, thus giving rise to a simple notion of spatial tensor — namely, a tensor on the space manifold. The second question is: does the geometric structure of the spacetime determine the physics, in particular, does it determine its relativistic or preferred- frame character? We find that it does not, for different physics (either relativistic or not) may be defined on the same spacetime structure — and also, the same physics can be implemented on different spacetime structures. Introduction The study of circles is one of the interesting objects in differential geometry. A curve γ(s) on a Riemannian manifold M parametrized by its arc length 5 is called a circle, if there exists a field of unit vectors Ys along the curve which satisfies, together with the unit tangent vectors Xs — Ϋ(s)9 the differential equations : FSXS = kYs and FsYs= — kXs, where k is a positive constant, which is called the curvature of the circle γ(s) and Vs denotes the covariant differentiation along γ(s) with respect to the Aiemannian connection V of M. For given a point lEJIί, orthonormal pair of vectors u, v^ TXM and for any given positive constant k, we have a unique circle γ(s) such that γ(0)=x, γ(0) = u and (Psγ(s))s=o=kv. It is known that in a complete Riemannian manifold every circle can be defined for -oo<5<oo (Cf. [6]). The study of global behaviours of circles is very interesting. However there are few results in this direction except for the global existence theorem. In general, a circle in a Riemannian manifold is not closed. Here we call a circle γ(s) closed if = there exists So with 7(so) = /(0), XSo Xo and YSo— Yo. Of course, any circles in Euclidean m-space Em are closed. And also any circles in Euclidean m-sphere Sm(c) are closed. -

An amazing amount of geometry of X is encoded in the long exact cohomology sequence of the exponential sequence of sheaves on X: exp £ 0 ! Z !OX !OX ! 0; where exp takes a holomorphic function f on an open subset U to the invertible holomorphic function exp(f) := e(2¼i)f on U; notice that the kernel is the constant sheaf on Z, and that the exponential map is surjective as a morphism of sheaves because every holomorphic function on a polydisk has a logarithm. These are notes on divisors from Ravi Vakil's book [2] on scheme theory that I prepared for the Foundations of Algebraic Geometry seminar at Harvard. Most of it is a rewrite of chapter 15 in Vakil's book, and the originality of these notes lies in the mistakes. I learned some of this from [1] though. Recall: Definition 0.1. A line bundle on a ringed space X (e.g. a scheme) is a locally free sheaf of rank one. The group of isomorphism classes of line bundles is called the Picard group and is denoted Pic(X). Here is a standard source of line bundles. 1. The twisting sheaf 1.1. Twisting in general. Let R be a graded ring, R = R0 ⊕ R1 ⊕ ::: . We have discussed the construction of the scheme ProjR. AN EXPLORATION OF COMPLEX JACOBIAN VARIETIES MATTHEW WOOLF Abstract. In this paper, I will describe my thought process as I read in [1] about Abelian varieties in general, and the Jacobian variety associated to any compact Riemann surface in particular. I will also describe the way I currently think about the material, and any additional questions I have. I will not include material I personally knew before the beginning of the summer, which included the basics of algebraic and differential topology, real analysis, one complex variable, and some elementary material about complex algebraic curves. Abelian Sums (I) The first thing I read about were Abelian sums, which are sums of the form 3 X Z pi (1.1) (L) = !; i=1 p0 where ! is the meromorphic one-form dx=y, L is a line in P2 (the complex projective 2 3 2 plane), p0 is a fixed point of the cubic curve C = (y = x + ax + bx + c), and p1, p2, and p3 are the three intersections of the line L with C. The fact that C and L intersect in three points counting multiplicity is just Bezout's theorem. Since C is not simply connected, the integrals in the Abelian sum depend on the path, but there's no natural choice of path from p0 to pi, so this function depends on an arbitrary choice of path, and will not necessarily be holomorphic, or even Date: August 22, 2008.
