Beginning June 1, the network is introducing a new summer line-up full of laughs with two nights of original sitcoms, including “The Soul Man,” starring Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash, returning series “The Exes,” starring Donald Faison, Wayne Knight, David Alan Basche, Kelly Stables and Kristen Johnston and “Retired at 35” starring George Segal, Jessica Walter, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Johnathan McClain and Josh McDermitt. June on TV Land will also feature “TV Land Presents: The AFI Life Achievement Award Honoring Shirley MacLaine” and the launch of acquisition “That ‘70s Show.” Below is a detailed look at TV Land’s summer programming: ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING “The Soul Man” SERIES PREMIERE: Wednesday, June 20 at 10pm ET/PT “The Soul Man” stars Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash and revolves around R&B superstar-turned-minister Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine (played by Cedric). However, his family is not exactly eager to give up the fabulous superstar life for their new humble one.

    The Hunger Games: An Indictment of Reality Television An ELA Performance Task The Hunger Games and Reality Television Introductory Classroom Activity (30 minutes) Have students sit in small groups of about 4-5 people. Each group should have someone to record their discussion and someone who will report out orally for the group. Present on a projector the video clip drawing comparisons between The Hunger Games and shows currently on Reality TV: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdmOwt77D2g) After watching the video clip, ask each group recorder to create two columns on a piece of paper. In one column, the group will list recent or current reality television shows that have similarities to the way reality television is portrayed in The Hunger Games. In the second column, list or explain some of those similarities. To clarify this assignment, ask the following two questions: 1. What are the rules that have been set up for The Hunger Games, particularly those that are intended to appeal to the television audience? 2. Are there any shows currently or recently on television that use similar rules or elements to draw a larger audience? Allow about 5 to 10 minutes for students to work in their small groups to complete their lists. Have students report out on their group work, starting with question #1. Repeat the report out process with question #2. Discuss as a large group the following questions: 1. Norfolk Festevents is bringing nationally known chefs straight from New Orleans to Norfolk to serve up the heart and soul of Louisiana food dish by dish at the 25th Annual AT&T Bayou Boogaloo & Cajun Food Festival starting Friday, June 20- Sunday, June 22, 2014 in Town Point Park in Downtown Norfolk, VA. Norfolk’s annual “second line” with New Orleans’ unique culture spices it up this year with the addition of multiple New Orleans chefs that are sure to bring that special spirit to life in Town Point Park. Cooking up their famous cajun & creole cuisines are Ms. Linda The Ya-ka-Mein Lady, Chef Curtis Moore from the Praline Connection, Chef Woody Ruiz, New Orleans Crawfish King Chris “Shaggy” Davis, Jacques-Imo’s Restaurant, Edmond Nichols of Direct Select Seafood, Chef Troy Brucato, Cook Me Somethin’ Mister Jambalaya and more! They have been featured on such television shows as Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations”, Food Networks highly competitive cooking competition “Chopped”, “Food Paradise” and “The Best Thing I Ever Ate”.

    Andy Richter – actor, writer, comedian and sidekick of Conan O’Brien Andy Richter is an actor, writer and comedian. He’s best known for working with Conan O’Brien on three different talk shows over the years. He often plays dumb guys on t-v shows, but he’s super smart. He was born in Indiana but grew up mostly in Illinois. His first inkling of depression came at a very young age and it involved a record player. “My parents divorced when I was four. I remember being a child and listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge over Troubled Water. I didn’t fully understand it, but I would play it over and over. My Dad stayed in Bloomington and my Mom took us to her parents in Illinois. I would play a slide show in my head of Bloomington and of our house and make myself so sad. So I learned this kind of luxuriating in sadness and depression. I must have been deriving some kind of comfort.” Most kids that age don’t act like that. But Andy had an affinity for depression. Along with finding a connection to misery, he found a connection to comedy. It was the Carol Burnett show. “Honestly, it was imitating the Carol Burnett show and making my Grandmother and my brother and my family laugh. And also being an incorrigible smart-ass. As my mother said ‘I get paid for doing what I used to get sent out into the hall for in grade school.’” Andy said as a kid, his depression went from mental state to physical symptom.
