Clinician: Rebecca Burkhardt

Rebecca Burkhardt joined the UNI faculty as Director of Orchestral Activities in 1988. Besides her duties as Music Director of the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra she is CONDUCTOR Music Director for the UNI Opera Theatre. From Dialogue of the Carmelites and Madame Butterfly to Fiddler on the Roof and HAIR, her theater performances encompass the gamut of music-drama and musical comedy. She has appeared as guest conductor of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, Opera Illinois and as Music Director of the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra and the Dubuque Youth Symphony. Most recent engagements include Conservatory Orchestra at Aunlay-sous-Bois (France) and Florida Gulf Coast University orchestras. She performed as guest clinician and conductor for the Iowa All-State Orchestra and conducted that same ensemble at the 2005 National Governor's Convention in Des Moines. As conductor of the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, she has toured Russia, Costa Rica and New York City. A native of Texas, Dr. Burkhardt earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Horn Performance from Southwestern University (TX), a Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas, and her Ph. D. at the University of Texas, Austin.

Clinician: Ross Winter

Ross Monroe Winter is currently serving at Instructor of Violin at the University of Northern Iowa. His career spans multiple genres in the orchestral, chamber music, and solo fields as well as work in film and television. VIOLIN Currently he is a member of the Richmond Symphony (VA) and the IRIS Orchestra in Tennessee, and is an alternate with the National and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. He has previously been a member of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Boston Philharmonic, and has performed with the New Jersey and Alabama Symphony Orchestras among others. During the summers, Ross serves as Chair of Violin Studies at the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy, as well as performing as Principal Second Violin of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra. Devoted to chamber music, he is a founding member of the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble, which is ensemble-in-residence at WCVE Public Radio and formerly at the Lake George Music Festival.

Clinician: Todd Williams

Todd Williams began his musical studies as a Suzuki student, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music VIOLIN degree from the University of Minnesota in violin performance. He also completed extensive Suzuki training at the University of Minnesota, studying with Mark Bjork, and was an intern for the Suzuki program at the McPhail Center for the Arts in Minneapolis.

Before joining the UNI Suzuki School faculty in 2003, he was a faculty member at the St. Paul Conservatory and taught Suzuki at the ABC Montessori International School in Bloomington. He is a member of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony.

Clinician: Julia Bullard

Julia Bullard teaches viola, string pedagogy, and string methods and techniques at the University of Northern Iowa. Bullard is the Associate Director for Graduate Studies in the School of music. From 2003-2010, Bullard VIOLA also served as Director of the UNI Suzuki School. She is an active solo, chamber and orchestral performer both in the US and abroad. She has also presented master classes at Herzen Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia; the University of Costa Rica in San José, Costa Rica; and the State University of New York at Fredonia. Bullard has served on the board of the Iowa Viola Society and as President of the Iowa String Teachers’ Association. Bullard received the D.M.A. degree from the University of Georgia, where she was the Director of the Pre-College String Program. She received her M.M. (string pedagogy and music history) and B.M. (performance) degrees from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.

Clinician: Jonathan Chenoweth

Cellist Jonathan Chenoweth received his training at the Oberlin Conservatory and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Before coming to UNI in 1991, he performed as a member of several professional ensembles CELLO including the Dakota Quartet, the Soviet Emigre Chamber Orchestra, the Richmond (VA) Symphony, and the contemporary music group Bis. He has been a soloist at festivals in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont. He has taught at universities in Pennsylvania, Missouri, and South Dakota.

At UNI, Dr. Chenoweth is head of the String Division and coordinator of chamber music activities.

Clinician: Alexander Pershounin

Alex Pershounin has performed extensively throughout Europe and United States in both classical and jazz settings and has been featured as a performer and composer DOUBLE BASS on such internationally recognized music events as Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, Europe’s Jazz Contest in Belgium, and New Orleans Jazz Fest, among many others. His performing credits include collaboration projects and appearances with world-class artists ranging from Bob Berg, Mulgrew Miller, Conrad Herwig, and Benny Golson to Itzhac Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and Ray Charles, to name just a few. He also has recorded several commercially released compact disc albums and music to four full-length motion pictures. He holds DMA and MFA degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and MFA and BM degrees from Russia’s most prestigious music institution: Gnessins' State Academy of Music in Moscow.

Clinician: Gretchen Brumwell

Gretchen Brumwell is the adjunct instructor of harp at the University of Northern Iowa. She serves as principal harpist of Orchestra Iowa and is an active performer throughout Iowa. As a soloist, she has appeared with Orchestra HARP Iowa, the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony, the Ottumwa Symphony, the Oskaloosa Symphony, the Iowa City Community String Orchestra, and the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra.

In addition to her work at UNI, Ms. Brumwell serves as harp instructor at Coe College and the Orchestra Iowa School, where she directs the Advanced Harp Ensemble. She received her M.M. in harp performance from Rice University. While at Rice, she was a regular substitute with the Houston Symphony and the Houston Ballet Orchestra. Her teachers include Paula Page, Mary Bircher, and the legendary Alice Chalifoux.
