Dear parents, staff and students,

College Open Day. A big thankyou to all staff, students and ENROL NOW FOR 2009 parents who helped out at our annual Open Day last Sunday. We were lucky that the weather was better than predicted Years 7 & 11 and the College was looking at its best thanks to the many Enrolment packages available helpers at the Works Day on Saturday. The purpose of the day is not only to help with enrolments but also to display the from the College many good things that are happening in the College. It some- times gets very frustrating when people in the community want to paint a negative picture of our school and ignore the many good things that are going on and the many excellent students we have here. We need to celebrate the good news and the many positive achievements of our school community.

Enrolments for 2009. It is now time for any new enrolments for next year to be lodged. If you have family or friends who are intending to enrol students, please let them know that the forms should be completed as soon as possi- ble. Likewise if siblings are going to be enrolled for next year, this should be done now. Enrolment packages are available from the front office.

Parents and Friends. The term two meeting will be held in the staffroom at 7.30 pm next Tuesday evening, May 27th. All parent are most welcome to attend.

World Youth Day. We will be hosting around 450 pilgrims during the week of 14th to 21st of July. We are asking for community help in providing hospitality for our visitors. They will have to be given breakfast in the morning and supper when they return in the evening. They will be sleeping in classrooms but it would be good if we could pro- vide then with a few extra comforts of home while they are here. Two staff members will be staying over each night to look after the site and it would be good if we could get a roster of volunteers to assist them. Please contact the school office or me if you can help this event in any way. Our students who have registered as pilgrims have been asked to finalise financial arrangements if they are to re- ceive a subsidy from the College and the Catholic Education Office. No students wishing to attend should miss out because of financial hardship. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I encourage all students to make the most of the week by attending some of the celebrations.

From the Assistant Principal The support demonstrated by our volunteer students last Sunday at the ‘Open Day’ was tremendous. To see so many boys present, working in a diverse range of jobs and demonstrations was very pleasing. Without these boys giving up their time, days like last Sunday would not succeed. My grateful thanks go to all of these boys who demonstrated just how proud they are of their College. In preparation for ‘Open Day’, we also had a works day on Saturday. My thanks to the parents and boys who came on this day. The College looked splendid on Sunday morning; you did a great job. Last week Mr. White and I attended a meeting with parents from Christian Brothers Burwood to discuss the advantages of their sons attending Holy Cross when their College closes at the end of next year. We took along to this meeting Matthew Nicholls from Year 8, so that the Burwood parents had an opportunity to speak with one of our students first hand. I’d like to thank Matthew; he was an absolute inspiration to every- one. His personal presentation was excellent; he was polite, cheerful and friendly. Mr. White and I were very proud to have Matthew with us. He is a credit to his school and family. During the month of May a decade of the Rosary is said at lunch time in the Chapel each day. A number of boys have been attending this, but numbers have been low, even allowing for the number of reminders be- ing made. It would be encouraging to see more boys attending the Chapel to demonstrate their Catholic faith. Please encourage your son to attend; it only takes five minutes of his time.

Curriculum Matters Year 12 It is only 12 school weeks until the Trial HSC Examinations, which start on Monday 4th August. I am a little con- cerned at the present time that some students in Year 12 have lost focus. This concern has come from teaching staff that have raised issues with me about student’s poor participation in classroom activities; their failure to bring the necessary equipment to class; and failure to complete homework tasks. The HSC year is an extremely important year for these students in their educational development and setting themselves up for the future no matter what they may decide to do after school life. I will be discussing these issues and concerns with all Year 12 students next week and ask you the parents for your support in ensuring your son’s refocus and provide themselves the opportunity to achieve their best possible results in the HSC. Students in their HSC year presently have a Study Plan in place, which should include time for Homework, Assessments and Revision. They should also be reducing the time spent on social activities and work if possible. Parents please impress on your sons the need to study productively. I would also encourage Year 12 students to approach Ms. A Sheehan the Careers Advisor, now that they have received all their Semester 1 results. The re- sults can be entered into the UAI calculator and an estimate UAI produced. This will give students a good idea of how they are progressing and how much more is required.

Year 7 to 10 Semester 1 Examinations These started on Monday May 28th and will conclude on Tuesday June 12th. As a partner in your son's learning I would ask that you continue to encourage, support and assist him in his preparation for these exams, as this can be a very stressful time.

Important Dates 2nd -13th June – Year 7-10 Semester 1 Assessment/Examination Block 2nd July – Year 9 and 10 Parent and Teacher Interview Evening. Reports will distributed on this night

Year 8 Camp

Our camp experience was conducted at The Tops Conference Centre, at picturesque Stanwell Tops, during the last week of term 1. Reports that the weather would not be great caused a little anxiety. Imagine, over 100 teenage boys, cooped up in- side, for three days and nights! Fortunately, we were blessed with good weather while it rained back at school.

The theme of the camp was to Push the Boundaries. The activities, Mission Impossible and Survivor focussed on team building and reliance on your mates to get quite complex physical and mentally challenging tasks done. Other activities were designed to remove us from our comfort zone physically. For instance the Leap of Faith; harnessed 20 meters above the ground, stand- ing on a telegraph pole, then leaping out to grab onto a ring 22 meters from the ground. This activity helped to show that when you take risks, in a safe environment, encouraged by your friends, just about anything is possible. The Giant Swing, the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, is a favourite feature of our camp. Again, pushing the boundaries, taking us out of our comfort zone to see what we are capable of.

An army marches on its stomach, we certainly marched on ours. Happily, the friendly staff at The Tops catered for us with great food, and lots of it! This helped to fuel us for lots of team building and physical challenges.

Mr Samyia organised another award winning Trivia Challenge; a feature of our camps over the past two years as one of the evening activities. Mr Rekrut, planned and presented a very moving Paraliturgy, one we will never forget.

I would like to thank all the parents who allowed their sons to participate on the camp, also the teachers who gave up time with their families to give our students a truly memorable experience. Thanks to Mr Samyia, Mr Lum, Mr Hardy, Mr Rekrut and Mr Kelton, well done gentlemen! To the intrepid campers of Yr 8 2008, thanks for your cooperation and enthusiasm. Well done!

Rugby League Under 16’s - 15th May 2008 Holy Cross (34) Vs St Domonic’s (6)

For the second week in a row the team came out in the first 10 minutes and scored two quick tries, from some great attacking plays and brutal defence. Before the match the team strived for no mistakes football and we did- n’t make one mistake in the first half. I have never seen this in a school boy game before. We were up 22-0 at the end of the first half and looking like a team who could beat anyone.

The second half wasn’t so mistake free, we dropped simple passes and the whole team relaxed in defence. St Dom’s scored the first try in the second half, we woke up a bit after this but not to the same level as the first half.

Ryan Kain in his new position busted the defence and ran 80metres to score a try. Joel Brooks had a great game with the ball and his kicking game was excellent, scoring 3 tries himself and setting up 2 other tries. Luke Coster and Joshua Colechin had strong games in defence. Michael Poniris promoted to front row had an excellent game in attack and defence.

The next couple of weeks will be hard with St Gregory’s and Blacktown coming up, but if we play like we did to- day then we can beat these teams.

Tries - Joel Brooks x 3, Ryan Kain, Joshua Stanton Goals - Marcel Ferris x 3, Joel Brooks, Jarryd Clarke Points - 3 – Michael Poniris, 2 – Joel Brooks, 1 – Ryan Kain, 1- Luke Coster

Mr Damian Chase 15’s Rugby League 8/5/08

The 15s travelled to St Gregory’s for a 1.00pm kick off. The game started well enough with the players controlling the ball and doing the little things right. As the half progressed the players went away from this and as a result found themselves down 22-6 at half time. A lack of communication in defence continually allowed the St Greg- ory’s team to make breaks that we struggled to contain. Alex Kerti was having a great game at Hooker with strong defence and continually leading the team in attack. The second half continued in much the same way as the later stages of the first half, with the Cross boys failing to control the ball and not talking in defence. Despite a couple of opportunities the Cross boys did not trouble the scorer for the rest of the game. The final result was 44- 6 to St Gregory’s. Every one needs to attend training if the team is to improve on this performance. 3 points to Alex Kerti, 2 points to Curtis Sironen and 1 point to Frankie Tassone and Thomas Chylinski.

Mr Keith Rugg 14’s Rugby League 8/5/08

This team also travelled to St Gregory’s but they seemed to be affected by the trip. The team struggled to control the bigger St Gregory’s forwards and as a result found themselves down 18-0 at half time. A lot of dropped ball and poor communication in defence created the problems. A slight change of tactics at half time saw the team be the first scorers after the break. This raised the energy of the players for the rest of the half. In what became a real struggle for both teams, it seemed whoever had the ball ended up scoring. Again the size of the St Gregory’s for- wards eventually wore the Cross boys down and they lost 42-18. The score line did not do justice to the effort the players put into the game. 3 point to Angus Compton, 2 points to Luke Brooks and 1 point to Max Di Marco and Mason Farrell.

Mr Keith Rugg Under 14’s Rugby League 15/5/08

Under 14's vs Parramatta Marist 40 - 0 Win Holy Cross fielded a side that was ready to play and from the first few sets it was clear to see that Parramatta were just hanging on. and Nathan Milone were excellent in attack with Luke Brooks setting up Mason Farrell and Max Dimarco for easy long range tries. Another big success story was Michael Min who after his third game of league could prove a great asset towards the end of the year. With a bit of training and growth this side could really challenge in the future.1st Grade League HCC vs Marist Eastwood Holy Cross won on forfiet 20 - 0 as Eastwood failed to show up. They could smell a mercy rule drub- bing by the boys in Maroon and Gold. Next week is the CCC Carnival and there will be no games. Holy Cross has a record 7 representatives participating in the tournament. After that in two weeks time Holy Cross will go head to head with Patrician Brothers Blacktown. It should be a great game at Royal Frank St.

RUGBY LEAGUE 13a Rugby League 8/5/08

Ryde travelled to St Gregory’s to play this game. The team started well and had the upper hand for the first 4 or 5 minutes. It did not take long for the team to put some points on the board. Rydes impressive front row completely dominated the St Gregory’s team. They were backed up by a determined trio in the back row. The forwards stamped their authority on the game and the team was never headed. Tremendous defence by Misieli Vaiker stopped the main attacking weapon of the St Gregory’s team. The final result was a 40 to 10 win. 3 points to Seo Tatola, 2 points to Ola Moala and 1 point to Misieli Vaiker

Mr Keith Rugg Under 13’s Rugby League 15/5/08

Under 13's HCC v Parramatta Marist 48 - 8 Win. The game started of with and even flow of possession, however once Holy Cross controlled the football it was only a matter of time before Josh Khoury, Olla Moala and Chris Moana would dominate and score tries. Holy Cross were to big and to strong for Parramatta. Although Holy Cross were far from their best it was a solid performance. Holy Cross remains undefeated in this division and looks like all roads lead to Blacktown. Plenty of work to do before they face against the old enemy.

Mr Tim White Rugby League Referee’s Course 2008

29 students from Year 10 and 11 participated in completing the Level 1 schoolboy Referee’s Course on Monday 12th May. Doug Keen the NSW referees coordinator put the students through the course on this day. He said the students were the best group he has to complete the course. To complete the course students were to attend the final component of the course on Monday 19th May at Bal- main Leagues Club. A number of students attended and are now qualified to Rugby League Referee’s. The first day the students will use these skills are at the Sironen Sevens Primary School tournament next week. Good Luck boys.

MCS Cross Country Report 2008

A relatively small group of 20 students represented the College at the MCS Cross Country Carnival last Tuesday 20th of May. The squad was hit by illness and injury in the few days prior to the carnival. As a result of this, not all teams had the full quota of runners. In what turned out to be excellent conditions for a cross country carnival the boys all competed as best they could.

Individual results for the day: 12 Years Luke Johnston 23rd 13 Years Stephen Zagaras 9th Drew Manley 24th Matthew Woods 15th Chris Mather 32nd Sunny Joannou 19th Harry Cosgrove 35th Jayden Wheelhouse 37th 14 Years Kirk Mitchell 32nd 15 Years Clayton Musumeci 4th Benjamin Cox 42nd James Poniris 9th 16 Year Ellie Salloum 5th Justin Aria 11th Kyle Bown 6th Matthew Jordan 34th Sam White 21st 17 Years Michael Candy 3rd Joshua Hall 3 Joel Mc Fadden 6th

Team results for the day: The 13 years team finished 2nd overall. They will receive their silver medals at the next College assembly. The 15 years team finished 3rd overall. The 16 years team finished 4th overall The Junior boys, aged from 12s to 16s, finished 4th in the Junior team Championship.

Those boys that finished in the top six, (5 of the College students), will now progress to the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Carnival in early June at Eastern Creek raceway.

Mr Kelton and I would like to thank the boys for their efforts on the day and they way they behaved at the venue. They are a great bunch of students to take away for a carnival. Well done to all students who worked so hard to participate in the appropriate manner.

Good luck to those who are attending the NSWCCC Carnival in a few weeks time.

FOOTBALL Under 14’s Football 8/5/08 St Dom's 1 - Holy Cross 0

A great effort from the boys this week. They came out strong and dominated the majority of the game. An unlucky goal and a bit of confusion at the back gave St Doms the lead. Once again we struggled to find the back of the net with plenty of opportunities missed.

Mr Ryan Acosta, U14 Football Coach Year 7 Football 8/5/08 Well done to the boys on a hard fought game and a 1-1 result against St Dominic's Penrith. All boys displayed great team spirit and continue to demonstrate genuine skill development. Special mention must go to Charlie Towers who had a great game as keeper to replace our regular but injured goalie. Charlie's safe hands under pressure kept us in the game. Well done!

Christina van Domburg, Year 7 Football Coach U14 Football 15/8/08 The 15s travelled to St Gregory’s for a 1.00pm kick off. The game started well enough with the players controlling the ball and doing the little things right. Mr Ryan Acosta This week in football: The thrills and spills of Year 10 opens soccer.

Round 7 - Thursday, May 15th Holy Cross 1 : St. Patrick's 1 A subdued start for the Crosseroos; St. Patrick's of Dundas proved a worthy opponent as they attacked and defended in great numbers, chasing the ball, pressuring our midfield. St. Pat's opened the scoring early in the second half as their nimble forward took advantage of a defensive cross-up to find net. Our men were not to be outdone however, as they worked hard for the equalizer. Terry Georgokopoulos helped the midfield to settle and George Oustambasidis had a strong game creating many scoring opportunities. The turning point of the match came when keeper Joseph Mustica deflected away a dangerous shot with the help of the crossbar denying St. Pat's the insurance goal. Joshua Hall responded by slamming home the equalizer. Rocks on defence James Zagaras and Stefan Matheos helped ensure a draw in this hard-fought match.

Man of the match- Joshua Hall, 2- Joseph Mustica, 3- George Oustambasidis

CCC Cup first round - Wednesday, May 21st Holy Cross 2 : Marist Kogarah 0 A great match-up beckoned as our beloved Crosseroos hosted the undefeated team from Marist Kogarah. Our men were pumped from the start and within 4 minutes Paul Borghonzian's pass found Davide Petralito who pa- tiently potted home the first goal. Bad news struck only a minute later when Terry Georgakoulos was red-carded for an accidental trip of a Kogarah player. Despite having to play the rest of the match with only 10 men, our squad were further motivated by this adversity and responded immediately by pulling together and defending superbly. Winning a corner, Anthony Zovko's masterful cross was headed in by Kyle Bown for a 2-0 lead before half-time. Although Koga- rah gained some territorial edge in possession in the second half, keeper Joseph Mustica gave excellent direction for our defenders to keep the goal area clear.

Man of the match - Davide Petralito, 2- Joshua Hall, 3- James Zagaras

Round 8 - Thursday, May 22th Holy Cross 0 : St. Gregory’s 1 On a high after yesterday's 2-0 win in the CCC Cup, the Crosseroos had an opportunity to climb into a share of top spot on the table with a win over league-leading St. Gregory's of Campbelltown. Unfortunately the visitors jumped off to a quick start and a 1-0 lead, forcing our men to play catch-up for the rest of the match. Although HCC grew stronger as the game progressed, we were unable to finish our passes and convert our chances. Joseph Mustica had another strong outing in goal with his leadership, clearing away crosses, calming his teammates, and occasionally leaving goal to assist our defenders. Overall it was a disappointing result, but we still have control of our own destiny. We will have to win our next three matches against Eastwood, Scholfields and Fairfield to ensure a semi-final berth.

Man of the match- Joseph Mustica, 2- Terry Georgakopoulos, 3-Angelo Campanella
