    Contact: Jill Notini t 202.872.5955 x318 [email protected] MANUFACTURERS ANNOUNCE USE OF DOE MEASUREMENT FOR CLOTHES WASHER CAPACITY CLAIMS WASHINGTON, DC‐‐ (January 26, 2011)‐‐ Manufacturers of clothes washers have independently determined that, beginning on or before April 30, 2011, they will voluntarily communicate capacity to consumers using only the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clothes washer test procedure for drum volume calculations, including the most recent guidance on measuring drum volume, released by DOE during the summer of 2010. These manufacturers, listed at the bottom of this release, who are choosing to communicate drum volume for non‐energy purposes solely based on the DOE procedure, will not reference an “IEC equivalent” volume. This change will be applicable to all clothes washers sold as of that date regardless of when manufactured. Specifically, on or before April 30, 2011, each of the undersigned manufacturers have decided to revise their on‐line website information to reflect only washer capacity determined in accord with the DOE test procedure. Additionally, all print material, including product catalogues, published by these manufacturers after April 30, 2011 will include only washer capacities based on the DOE procedure. Finally, these manufacturers will communicate these capacities to retailers of washers and will encourage retailers to communicate washer capacities calculated in accord with the DOE test procedure following the April 30, 2011 date. The DOE procedure is currently used by all manufacturers to report energy and water consumption to DOE, and will be used in AHAM’s new energy verification program for clothes washers. The DOE procedure provides an accurate, uniform and repeatable measurement of drum volume for the purpose of calculating energy and water consumption for all clothes washer types.

Companies are also trying to add extra features to attract more customers and make life easier for customers. This project was initiated to solve the problem of splashing of residual liquid outside the dishwasher boundary, resulting from the feeding of cups and glasses into the top basket in a dishwasher. The mission of the project was to develop a compact splash guard which can hinder liquid splashes outside the dishwasher boundary without any modification in the existing dishwasher. Further, this project also contributes to ensuring the growth of ASKO within innovation, development and business expansion. The foundation for the project was based on Lean Product Development, accompanied by a set of tools and methods to find the best result while fulfilling the knowledge gap and saving project time. Clearly stated requirements guided the project to develop concepts. Concepts were generated and tested using a cardboard model and prototyping. At the end, a single concept was selected from the four secondary concepts using a Kesselring Matrix. Finally, the project resulted in developing a prototype model of dishwasher spillage guard that fulfills all the requirement and desires of the company and users with a compact design as a new accessory to the dishwashing machine. A cost comparison was conducted to identify if the dishwasher spillage guard could generate profits while solving a customer problem.

Manufacturers are continuously trying to develop, produce and sell product functions and environmental impact features with good profit. To continually develop new features that the customer How to halve the electricity consumption for a household dishwasher chain is willing to pay for is a key factor for a manufacturer to survive. In this study has a heat pump system been added as a new feature to a dishwasher. The first heat pump dishwasher was introduced on the market in 2014 and the heat pump system was only used to heat the dishwasher. Comparing that first heat pump dishwasher was a new closed drying method introduced in this study Peder Bengtsson where no humid air evacuates to the kitchen. Experiments and simulations showed that a dishwasher with an added heat pump system can decrease the total electricity consumption by 50% when cleaning and drying the dishware comparing to an on market conventional dishwasher. The willingness from the customer chain to pay extra for this heat pump dishwasher is because of the decreases in electricity consumption and the fact that no humid air evacuates to the kitchen. This willingness makes the heat pump dishwasher to a variant which have possibility to succeed on the future market.
