NOTE: I have just received in the post an envelope addressed to the Epacris Study Group, posted from Hobart on May Znd, 2010. Unfortunately the envelope was slit along the bottom and was totally empty. There was no information regarding the sender, but ifyou have sent such a letter in recent days, please let me know, and perhaps cancel any cheque sent. Fortunately all turned out well in the end, as the next morning an Epacris Study Group renewal form was delivered with a $5 note stapled to the corner. Our very nice Post Office manager advised that it had been found on the floor of the district sorting office. He went on to explain that many of today's envelopes have a very effective self-sealing strip and if there is any air left in the envelope when the seal is fastened envelopes can 'pop' at the bottom as they go through the rollers of the sorting machines. This is certainly something I had not personally considered previously, but I felt it is very useful information for us all to be aware of. All of my letters will be squashed down firmly in future to avoid this potential problem. -

The purpose and scope of the document This document is the culmination of over 10 years investigation into the proposed importation of a European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, into Australia in managed hives for pollination purposes. While originally use in a wide range of field and greenhouse crops was envisaged, the proposal has been narrowed down to pollination of greenhouse crops, particularly tomatoes, in fully enclosed structures. -
Parramatta's Archaeological Landscape
Parramatta’s archaeological landscape Mary Casey Settlement at Parramatta, the third British settlement in Australia after Sydney Cove and Norfolk Island, began with the remaking of the landscape from an Aboriginal place, to a military redoubt and agricultural settlement, and then a township. There has been limited analysis of the development of Parramatta’s landscape from an archaeological perspective and while there have been numerous excavations there has been little exploration of these sites within the context of this evolving landscape. This analysis is important as the beginnings and changes to Parramatta are complex. The layering of the archaeology presents a confusion of possible interpretations which need a firmer historical and landscape framework through which to interpret the findings of individual archaeological sites. It involves a review of the whole range of maps, plans and images, some previously unpublished and unanalysed, within the context of the remaking of Parramatta and its archaeological landscape. The maps and images are explored through the lense of government administration and its intentions and the need to grow crops successfully to sustain the purposes of British Imperialism in the Colony of New South Wales, with its associated needs for successful agriculture, convict accommodation and the eventual development of a free settlement occupied by emancipated convicts and settlers. Recently, this conceptual structure has been criticized on the grounds that flowers attract a broader spectrum of visitors than one might expect based on their syndromes and that flowers often diverge without excluding one type of pollinator in favorofanother. Despite these criticisms, we show that pollination syndromes provide great utility in understanding the mechanisms of floral diversification. Our conclusions are based on the importance of organizing pollinators into functional groups according to presumed similarities in the selection pressures they exert. -

Karen A. Johnson iii iv Abstract Relationships between plants and their pollinators are thought to have played a major role in the morphological diversification of angiosperms. The epacrids (subfamily Styphelioideae) comprise more than 550 species of woody plants ranging from small prostrate shrubs to temperate rainforest emergents. Their range extends from SE Asia through Oceania to Tierra del Fuego with their highest diversity in Australia. The overall aim of the thesis is to determine the relationships between epacrid floral features and potential pollinators, and assess the evolutionary status of any pollination syndromes. The main hypotheses were that flower characteristics relate to pollinators in predictable ways; and that there is convergent evolution in the development of pollination syndromes. -
Wa Orchid Spectacular 2017 Four Day Tour
WA ORCHID SPECTACULAR 2017 FOUR DAY TOUR Tour 1: 7–10 August 2017 Tour 2: 8–11 August 2017 Notes for attendees The four day tour will comprise two identical trips staged one day apart. The first trip departs from Perth on Monday 7 August and will be led by Andrew Brown author of ‘Orchids of Western Australia’ and ‘Field Guide to the Orchids of Western Australia’. The second trip departs on Tuesday 8 August and will be led by Garry Brockman co-author of ‘Field Guide to the Orchids of Western Australia’. The daily itinerary is tentative and may be subject to change. If we hear of particularly good orchid populations that are not currently included it may be modified to incorporate them. Some currently listed locations may also be removed if it is found they do not contain good orchid populations this year. It is anticipated, however, that most locations listed here will be visited during the trip. We will do four planned orchid stops most days but, if time permits, will also do one or two additional opportunistic stops. The amount of time spent at each planned orchid stop will vary depending on the number of orchids seen but will usually be around 45 minutes. Opportunistic stops will generally be around 30 minutes. We will also have two comfort stops each day, some of these coinciding with orchid stops. Orchids listed for each site are the ones that we are most likely to see but are not guaranteed with species/numbers seen dependent on seasonal influences in 2017. -

This has been what I call a Melbourne winter – frequent rainfalls which have left the ground sodden and difficult to work. I’ve been trying to get a bobcat in to do some cleaning up for months and have to keep cancelling the bookings. The paddocks are saturated and dams are overflowing. This all bodes well for an excellent spring. As soon as the weather warms up our plants will jump out of the ground with vigour. The Solstice luncheon in June was very pleasurable. John and Barbara have consolidated their gardens and built up new beds ready for a spring planting. A soft carpet of sawdust creates a pathway between the beds allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of an amazing number of species of plants including many unusual ones being trialled. The garden has grown very large over the years and we spent quite a bit of time meandering through the collection. Lunch was delicious as usual and we all had some fun with a game of ‘Pass the Parcel’ which introduced us to a few personal secrets. The Presentation Dinner in Glen Innes for Jean Mott was a wonderful affair. About 32 people attended and the Crofters Cottage proved to be a perfect venue. Graeme Ingall presented Jean with her badge and some native flowers brought up from the Central Coast and he and Penelope Sinclair gave some excellent speeches about Jean’s great contribution to promoting native plants in the Glen Innes district over the years. -

Many of the plants are not sold and have to be returned to the owner sometimes in a damaged condition due to the rough handling received in the melee at the table. -
