A Conversation with Santa BY JUDY ZULE

Getting an audience with Santa Claus isn’t difficult. After all, a child can do it. But an actual interview is something else entirely. This simple Q&A required a series of phone calls and repeated emails before clinching a moment of Santa’s time. Santa’s schedule becomes crowded with mall visits, parades and preparation for the big night. Apparently, even before Christmas, he chalks up a lot of frequent flyer miles. And somewhere along the trajectory of 24/7 electronic

Did you always want to be a Santa? SC: I didn’t grow up wanting to be anything. I am Santa. (He tugs at his beard, which, for the record, remains firmly attached.) Next trick question, in an effort to get him to admit that he’s a retired school bus driver working weekends: BGHL: What do you do for a living in the off-season? SC: There is no off-season. I’m a toymaker. That’s what I do. If nothing else, Santa is determined to carry on a charade, but I’m beginning to think perhaps he really is something—if not magical at least sincere. Obviously, it’s time to double down. BGHL: Santa, there has been a lot of controversy. Who’s your favorite reindeer? Donner? Rudolph? Blitzen? Rather than answer that question outright, he hems and haws about the Santa necessity of a team effort and compares reindeer to offspring wherein parents don’t have favorites. BGHL: OK, then. Besides Rudolph, how do you tell them apart? SC: Don’t you read? (An eye roll for the illiterate journalist.) I “whistle, and shout and call them by name.” How can a jolly old elf act so reasonable and a seasoned reporter appear so inept? It seems that Santa has the upper hand. Fortunately, preparation (read: Google searches) turned up an interesting backstory that probably isn’t even true. Santa’s reindeer are uniquely suited to their mission. Rangifer tarandus are in the same family as caribou, and that means they can forage frozen landscapes with ease. Tundra is their food of choice, and combined with a circulatory system that steals from the extremities to heat the animals’ organs, there is no doubt that reindeer are hardy creatures. But upon further investigation, it seems those rugged animals with their beefy antlers may not always be what they seem. When it comes to those eight reindeer hauling Santa and his magic sleigh, there is the question of gender. Are Santa’s reindeer male or female? It’s difficult to really tell by their names, because for each Donner, there is a Vixen. For each Comet, there is a Cupid. Maybe the science will shed some light. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, male reindeer spend October mating with as many females as possible, and this depletes their energy and their fat reserves, so naturally, they wouldn’t have the energy to make the trip. Females on the other hand keep warm thanks to extra layers of fat that they store on their back legs. So females would have more energy for the trip. And female reindeer keep their antlers until early spring, whereas male reindeer drop their racks in late autumn. Does this mean that iconic image of Santa Claus and his sleigh illuminated by the big yellow glow from the light of a full moon is actually the perfect poster for girl power? The female reindeer, it seems, is both large and in charge—at Bowling Green | Elizabethtown | Franklin | Glasgow | Lexington least of Santa’s sleigh. A: The crawl space is not an area where many homeowners dare to venture. It is often dark, damp and cold—uninviting, to say the least. Unfortunately, this seldom- visited underbelly of the home can reduce the indoor air quality of the living areas above, causing moisture-related problems to the structure of the home and increasing utility costs. While the holidays make us appreciate the cozy confines of indoor spaces, the winter months can take their toll. Sometime last year during the long nights and cold winter weather, two Bowling Green homeowners decided to stop wishing for warmer adventures, and begin to plan for them instead. With help from builder Tim Graham of Design Builders, Inc., each family reimaged their backyard spaces to enhance the home’s livability. Bill and Jennie Edwards wanted a pool and a cabana, while Lisa Richards and her husband David decided on a covered porch with a unique design that forms a private perch above and a storage area below. Despite the similarities and despite having used the same builder, each project is distinctive.

Graham got high marks from both homeowners for his ability to help guide the process from start to finish. For example, when Lisa Richards first discussed a potential addition, she actually wasn’t thinking of a porch. She really just wanted someplace to store her pool furniture. But after she and her husband ruled out a pool house as too large a footprint, Graham suggested this unique design with a porch area above, “hiding” the storage space beneath. The original home was built in the 1970’s, so Graham had to match elements that would compliment the architectural detail and try to create a space that seemed like it was part of the original design. For her remodel project, Jennie Edwards faced a similar challenge. And although her home is not yet 20 years old, she was surprised to learn that the brick used on the façade was no longer available. That discovery prompted an all-points bulletin for the closest match. She credits Graham as well as his field crew with making the addition a successful project and says everybody involved offered valuable insights. Originally she had considered extending the breakfast nook and building their den off the kitchen. Instead, they took the entire project outdoors. By locating the sitting area off to one side, Jennie was able to keep her original screen porch, which now serves as a transitional space to the backyard. In addition to keeping her screened porch and adding a pool, Jennie knew she wanted two specific things from the construction project—a wood burning fireplace and a bathroom that guests could easily access. The new bathroom is just off the new porch. It shares a wall at the back of the house, which lends depth and architectural interest even in the small space But the wood-burning fireplace, as it turned out, wasn’t such a good idea. Instead, Graham

So now, rather than storing wood and dodging sparks, they can flip a switch and get the same warm ambiance of an outdoor fireplace without the hassle. Despite being nicknamed “the Project Manager” by her husband for her ability to navigate the chaos of a remodel, Jennie says she really was grateful for Graham’s patience and his wealth of knowledge. Her advice to others is simple: Before you build your dream house, first go through a renovation or an addition. There are so many decisions to be made and it helps if you’ve already done it at least once.

BG HOME & LIFESTYLE • WWW.BGDAILYNEWS.COM DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015 • 45 are tied up with these programs and the excitement of waiting for them to air on TV. It reflections didn’t feel like Christmas was coming until I had seen these shows. I think the content had very little to do with why they were so exciting. I think it’s because we gathered as a family to watch them together. Watching TV together was not something we did much of, so these nights always felt extra special. We all settled into the small TV room, my dad in his chair on my right and my mom in hers on my left. My younger brother, and eventually another one, and I sat on the floor, waiting in great anticipation for Sam Evolving Traditions BY Dayna Del Val the Snowman to come gliding toward us and begin the story. We laughed at Hocus Pocus, the precocious “She thinks I’m cuuuuuuuuuuuute!” and Frosty the Snowman were going to be on? rabbit in Frosty. We got scared by the “Happy birthday!” For those of you from the “rent it, own it, TV- Abominable Snowman and cheered when it When you read these this time of year, on-demand” generation, you don’t know that turned out he was a “Mighty Humble Bumble,” don’t you know immediately what stories they we used to only be able to see a program when according to Yukon Cornelius. are from? Don’t they take you right back to it actually aired on television. If you missed What mattered on those nights was being childhood and waiting in anticipation for the Rudolph, you had to wait another whole year together, anticipating the season to come and nights that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer before you could see it again. dreaming about the toys that were inevitably (see "Rudolph turns the Big 5-0" on page 12) Somehow, many of my holiday memories advertised during the breaks. Snuggling into our warm little house to watch something as a family was just one of the ways that we got ready for Christmas, but it was clearly an important one, because I still fondly recall those annual nights all these years later. Last year, I was working on something in the kitchen and turned on the TV. Imagine my delight when it turned out to be the night for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I turned it up and called my husband and son in to see what was on, thinking they might sit down and enjoy it with me. They acknowledged it and moved back to whatever they had been doing. I wondered that we had not been anticipating this night, but then I realized that because we had always had a VCR or DVD player, my son and I had never set aside the night that any of these shows were on TV when he was little. If he wanted to watch Frosty, we just slipped the tape or disk in and watched it. I had a little moment of sadness at this lost tradition, but then Clarice came to tell Rudolph she thought he was cute, and my heart soared with him. I enjoyed the program by myself and fondly remembered those nights from my own childhood.
