Death of a Salesman By Arthur Miller Revision Notes Summary and Analysis of the play Act I - Opening scene to Willy’s first daydream Summary The play begins on a Monday evening at the Loman family home in Brooklyn. After some light changes on stage and ambient flute music (the first instance of a motif connected to Willy Loman’s faint memory of his father, who was once a flute-maker and salesman), Willy, a sixty-three-year-old travelling salesman, returns home early from a trip, apparently exhausted. His wife, Linda, gets out of bed to greet him. She asks if he had an automobile accident, since he once drove off a bridge into a river. Irritated, he replies that nothing happened. Willy explains that he kept falling into a trance while driving—he reveals later that he almost hit a boy. Linda urges him to ask his employer, Howard Wagner, for a non-travelling job in New York City. Willy’s two adult sons, Biff and Happy, are visiting. Before he left that morning, Willy criticized Biff for working at manual labour on farms and horse ranches in the West. The argument that ensued was left unresolved. Willy says that his thirty-four- year-old son is a lazy bum. Shortly thereafter, he declares that Biff is anything but lazy. Willy’s habit of contradicting himself becomes quickly apparent in his conversation with Linda. Willy’s loud rambling wakes his sons. They speculate that he had another accident. Linda returns to bed while Willy goes to the kitchen to get something to eat. -

OnStage OnStageA Publication of the University of Dallas Drama Department v ONSTAGE The fall of 2018 has been a busy one for the Drama Table of Contents Department at the University of Dallas. We celebrated our fiftieth anniversary with over two hundred alumni 1 The Avant-Garde and the and faculty; among them were Patrick and Judy Kelly, the founders of our department. We had an afternoon Western Tradition of toasts, tours, and slideshows of past productions to 3 “Preface to Three Plays “ celebrate half a century of student theater. 4 Jungian Archetypes in The Skin of Our Teeth The University of Dallas also hosted the third biennial Dallas Shakespeare Conference in October. For us, that meant pausing The Skin of Our Teeth rehearsals for a week to 6 Perspectives from UD rehearse a staged reading of The Tempest. Our cast consisted of university students, Faculty faculty members, and professional actors from the Dallas area, and we performed to over 8 Thinking Outside the Box two hundred and fifty guests. Theater: An Interview with Director and Designers Throughout all of our events, work on The Skin of Our Teeth has been progressing steadily. The finished play is the result of the time and energy of dozens of students 11 Thornton Wilder: Transforming and professionals working in the scene shop, the costume shop, the drama department the American Stage office, the light and sound booths, and, of course, in rehearsal. Productions at University of Dallas are never an isolated event; they are woven into the classes, student life, and 13 Redemption in The Skin of Our Teeth research projects of the student body. -

The Skin of Our Teeth Character List Large roles (appear in each act, substantial line memorization required): Mr. George Antrobus – The father of the all-American family. In the first act he invents the wheel; in the second he is elected president of the human race; in the third act he returns from war seeking ways to rebuild society. Sometimes arrogant and power-hungry, he is capable of learning and wisdom. Suited for adult or upper school student. Sabina Fairweather. The maid of the Antrobus family, she serves as an Everywoman character who is often confused by the wild goings-on of the play and (sometimes selfishly) seeks ways to live an ordinary, individually happy life. Sabina also steps out of character as “Miss Somerset,” the actor supposedly playing the role. Upper school student or adult. Mrs. Maggie Antrobus. A pillar of strength, she is concerned with the well-being of her children above all. Adult. Henry Antrobus. The family’s son. Initially a smaller role as a boy who struggles with school, in the last act he comes into serious conflict with his father, symbolizing the potential darkness within people. Upper school student. Gladys Antrobus. An affectionate young girl in Act I, she grows up yet remains positive. Somewhat smaller role than other family members. Upper school or middle school student. Additional roles (use of actors in more than one act will depend on auditions). Announcer (Act I and II; possibly two different roles). TBD whether announcer is on or offstage. A Production Analysis of Arthur Miller's the Price
BELL, LOUIS P. A Production of Arthur Miller's The Price. (1976) Directed by: Dr. Herman Middleton. Pp. 189 The purpose of this thesis is to study the background surrounding the playwright and the play itself in preparation for a production of the play, and then present a critical evaluation of the production. Chapter One deals with the following: (1) research of the playwright's background, (2) research of the play's back- ground, (3) character description and analysis, (4) analysis of the set, (5) the director's justification of script, and (6) the director's interpretation of that script. Chapter Two consists of the prompt book for the pro- duction, performed October 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, in Taylor Theatre at the University of North Carolina at Greens- boro. Notations include: (1) movement, composition, and picturization, (2) details of characterization and stage business, (3) rhythm and tempo, and (4) lighting and sound cues, production photographs are also included. The third chapter consists of critical evaluations in four areas. They are: (1) achievement of Interpretation, (2) actor-director relationships, (3) audience response, and (4) personal comments. American realism & expressionism: Death of a Salesman /Arthur Miller Arthur Miller: born in New York in October, 1915 into a Jewish-Polish family. During the Great Depression (1929) his father’s business was ruined and the family moved to a house in Brooklyn, which is thought to be the model for the Loman house in Death of a Salesman. Miller was a hard worker as a teen: he held multiple jobs to financially help his family-- his family constantly struggled with money. On a mix of scholarship and his hard-earned money, Miller attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a degree in English in 1938. During his time at University, he was awarded a prize for play writing along with Tennessee Williams. <---Tennessee Williams is one of Miller's greatest inspirations; we will discuss him later on (his most famous play is A Streetcar Named Desire..."STELLAAAAA!!!!!") He returned to New York and began a career writing for a radio broadcast. He married his college sweetheart in 1940 and they had two children; this marriage did not last very long, however--they were divorced within 5 years of marriage. While the majority of the male population at time was drafted into the US military (WWII), Miller was exempt due to a minor injury to his kneecap. Miller filled his romantic void by marrying THE Marilyn Monroe in 1956: the two worked often together in film/dramatic projects. Unfortunately,they were divorced in 1961. In 1957, Miller was brought before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and was called upon to explain his Communist tendencies while involved in the Federal Theater Project (as well as his other political activities) .<---this was VERY common during the time (not much of a scandal) -This project was a New Deal agency (relief, recovery, reform...created by Roosevelt) created to provide jobs in the theater. -

American Literature Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller This summer, you will read one of the most famous American plays ever written. When you return to school in August, you will have an inclass writing on your chosen work. It will be your first test grade. Let us tell you a little bit about Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller. Death of a Salesman was written in 1949 by American playwright Arthur Miller. The play was the recipient of the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony award for the best play of the year. It has since been honored as one of the most important plays of the Twentieth century. The play deals with several important themes, among them, and perhaps most famouslythat of the American Dream gone wrong. Try to figure out what Willy’s understanding of the American Dream is, and how it goes so terribly wrong for him and his family. Another important theme is that of abandonment. Willy has experienced a series of abandonments in his lifetime, leading him deeper and deeper into despair and bewilderment. Here are some suggestions for you in order to help you read the play more effectively. 1. Write a short description of each of the main characters in the play. Find one good quote for each of them. Let your quote be one that really gets to their character, or their role in the play. 2. Try to figure out what triggers the “memory scenes” in the play, and what Arthur Miller achieves by using them as he does.
