St. Paul Lutheran Church and School The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod Fifth Sunday After Epiphany February 10, 2019 As We Gather…During the season of Epiphany, which means “shine forth,” the Readings shine forth to us the real, biblical Jesus. So far this season we have seen how Jesus turned water into wine, how He taught with an authority never heard before, and how He cast out demons and healed the sick. Now this week we hear that Jesus calls disciples to be “catching people.” God calls. He calls individual people such as Isaiah and Peter, and groups of people such as the Twelve and the Church today. As God called Isaiah in a spectacular vision to speak God’s Word in a world marred by sin, so He calls us, the Church, to do the same. As Jesus called Peter to go from catching fish to “catching men,” so He calls us, the Church, to do the same. What God has done for all of creation in the death and resurrection of Jesus will not be kept silent. God calls us to speak the Gospel in a sin-marred world and to live in ways that demonstrate the power of the Gospel. Welcome! Guests: We are glad you are worshiping with us today! First Article Pastor & People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven Apostles’ Creed and earth. (5pm, 8 & 11am) Pastor: What does this mean? People: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes and ears, and all my members, my reason and my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. Pastor: For the needs of our local community, that businesses flourish for the good of all, that workers do their work with a sense of vocation, giving glory to God, that those with difficult jobs be assured that their labor is not in vain and that God is with them, that corruption and injustice decrease, and integrity, honesty, and responsibility increase, Holy God, People: in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
