The first thing that has probably struck you with regard to this Bulletin is the magnificent illustration of the Red Back Kingfisher by wildlife artist Christopher Pope on the cover. Australia is very fortunate to have both a diverse and beautiful range of birdlife. Christopher’s skill enabled him to capture the incredible detail of the Australian Kingfishers issue due out 26 October. I believe this is one of his best stamp issues to date, and possibly my favourite of 2010. Of course, there are a number of other very special stamp issues © Copyright 2010 Australian Postal in this edition. To begin with, we commemorate the opening of the Corporation. All rights reserved. FEEDLOTTING - reducing the feed bill Revolutionising the northern muster Beef CRC awarded for national innovation Winter 2007 Contents Innovation awarded for boosting Australia’s beef industry . .3 Cutting costs for Australia’s feedlot sector . .4 Revolutionising the north Australian cattle muster . .6 A spotlight on Struan the hub of South Australian livestock research . .8 Do fertile bulls breed more fertile progeny . .10 Tackling ticks, head on! . .12 Building a better Thai beef stir-fry . .13 Editor’s Note Beef CRC Publications . .15 Welcome to the Winter edition of National Beef Calendar of Events . .16 the Beef Bulletin. In this edition we highlight the hard work of Beef CRC researchers across Australia. Some of this work aimed at improving the profitability and productivity of Australia’s beef industry was only recently recognised with a national award for excellence. The north Australian cattle muster is also under the Beef Bulletin spotlight with research to revolutionise northern herd management. The solution? A single calf drop, timed to perfection, matched to environmental or production cycles, year after year, all achievable with the use of smart genetics. With grain finishing quickly becoming the norm across the Australian supply chain and with little respite from high grain prices on the horizon what can be done to make more beef using less feed? Beef CRC researchers have an answer in sight following their discovery of more than 100 DNA markers linked to feed efficiency, one of the most crucial factors of lot feeding. The pages of the Winter Beef Bulletin will also take you to an idyllic spot between the renowned Australian wine regions of Padthaway and Coonawarra in South Australia.

Pioneering Natural Value NAB Agribusiness Calendar 2015 The 2015 NAB Agribusiness Calendar celebrates NAB’s ongoing support for natural value. A healthy economy and healthy environment go hand-in-hand, and natural value is all about taking advantage of new opportunities that arise from an increased focus on natural capital and the environment – whether that be water and energy efficiency or advances in pest and waste management. That’s why NAB has established a Natural Value strategy, which focuses on better understanding and managing our own natural capital risks, and backing businesses to do the same. Australian farmers recognise more than anyone the importance of balancing environmental and sustainability concerns with their business operations. There is no shortage of exciting opportunities ahead as we see Australian agribusinesses increasingly taking advantage of sustainability issues that were once considered solely a risk, and leveraging new business opportunities that arise. Having supported Australian farmers and agribusinesses for over 155 years, we understand the important role our farmers play in the progress of natural value. I’m proud NAB was one of the first banks in the world to sign up to the Natural Capital Declaration to build on our understanding of the value natural capital brings to our economy. As we look to 2015, we wish all farmers a prosperous and successful year, and our team looks forward to working with you to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
