O PALEOLITIKU SRBIJE I Karakter, Mesto I Značaj Paleolitika Srbije O PALEOLITIKU SRBIJE BRANKO GAVELA Univerza, Beograd I Karakter, mesto i značaj paleolitika Srbije nisu bili određeni ni prak tično ni teoretski sve do sredine našeg veka. Paris 1925: Mac Curdy G.. Human Origins I, 1924’; Obermaier H., Jugoslavien, A Paleolithikum, u Ebert, Reallexikon der Vorgeschichte, s. v.; Sku- til J., Balkânské paleolitikom. Obzor preliistoricky XIV. Praha 1950. Govoreći neposredno i o pojavi orinjačke kulture u ovoj oblasti, Childe njenu pojavu ovde pripisuje pojavi novih antropoloških elemenata: »The latter (tj. the Aurignacien, prim. B. G.) is represented over a wide area throughout our province from Transylvania and the Balkan to Central Germany... but the same industry is encountred in many caves or rock-shleters from those round Belgrade and Ciclovina in the Transyl vanian Alps to Ofnet in Bavaria, Wildscheuer on the Lahn and Karlstein in Eifel.«4 5 Kao što se vidi u podacima ovoga autora, inače odličnog poznavaoca praistorije Podunavlja, ističu se, u njegovoj oceni balkansko-podunavskog orinjasijena, dva momenta koji zaslužuju izvesnu pažnju: orinjačka indu strija, otkrivena u nekim pećinama ili podkopinama (»abris«) i njihovo lokalizovanje oko Beograda. • Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Leicestershire and Rutland: Progress and Potential by Anne Graf
Leic.Arch. Sept 2002 11/10/02 7:54 AM Page 1 Lower and Middle Palaeolithic Leicestershire and Rutland: progress and potential by Anne Graf Drawing on archaeological and geological research, recent finds, museum collections and borehole evidence, this paper describes the changing local landscape and environment round the Cromerian-period Bytham river valley, possibly the major early entry route to Britain from Europe; the succeeding pro-glacial Lake Harrison and present-day post-glacial rivers; and highlights deposits with Palaeolithic archaeological potential. Palaeolithic tools of quartzite, comparable with other Midlands raw materials, and of andesitic and Charnian tuff may suggest occupation from around 600,000 BC, while flint tools suggest at least intermittent post-Anglian occupation, followed by probable abandonment from after 160,000 BC until possible Devensian re-occupation by Neanderthalers post- 60,000 BC. Introduction The last twenty years have seen very exciting results for the Palaeolithic period in Leicestershire and Rutland. This paper discusses these results, which are placed in the contexts both of the local landscape changes, and of the growing national understanding of key Palaeolithic issues. The paper aims to provide a summary of current knowledge of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupants and their environments and landscapes in these two counties, and to highlight potential for further investigation. The local, and many national, sites, to which references can be found in the bibliography, are presented in the timechart in illus. 1, with their relative positions within current archaeological and geological divisions and phases. Throughout the timechart and the rest of this paper ‘thousand [years] ago’ will be abbreviated to ‘ka’, while the oxygen isotope stages now used for international date correlations (see below) will also be abbreviated, so that, for example, OIS-16 indicates oxygen isotope stage 16.

Again, in a subject such as Prehistory, so closely connected with various branches of written History, Geology, Ethnology, and Later Archaeology, it is very difficult to know when to be ultra-elementary, and when to assume a slight general knowledge of one of these allied subjects. Thus, in the chapters which deal with purely geological problems, a student of Geology wishing to learn something of Prehistory will find some of the most elementary geological ideas ex- plained at length, as all are not geologists.

EXCAVATIONS AT GRIME'S GRAVES. 73 EXCAVATIONS AT GRIME'S GRAVES DURING 1917. BY A. E. PEAKE, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. Read at Saffron Walien, February Ulh, 1919. In 1917 the work at Grime's Graves was carried out by Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Lingwood and myself, and was limited to sections and floors, as the war prevented us from obtaining outside labour. For permission to excavate, we are again much indebted to the Trustees of the Weeting Estate, Mrs. T. S. Hall and Mr. C. Cockburn. The following paper gives the results of the work, and in it are figured some of the new implements. The Grime's Graves culture shows a wide variety of forms, and I think it is important to illustrate as many of these as possible. This vast factory must have sent out implements far beyond the present boundaries of Britain, and no doubt many implements found on the Continent will be traced to this source. Very few industries have been sufficiently illustrated in the past, and this has led to erroneous conclusions when collections are not. accessible. The series selected for illustration in the present paper add a number of new forms to those already figured in previous numbers of these Proceedings, and in the Report of the work of 1914, and emphasise the great variety of forms made in this culture. The list is not yet complete. It is essentially a flake industry, the flakes being worked up into implements. The broken I.evallois flake is, however, far and away the commonest piece made on this site.

  • Contextualizing Curational Strategies at the Late Lower Paleolithic Site of Holon, Israel
Contextualizing Curational Strategies at the Late Lower Paleolithic Site of Holon, Israel ARIEL MALINSKY-BULLER Institute of Archaeology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, ISRAEL; [email protected] submitted: 23 January 2014; accepted 24 September 2014 ABSTRACT Technological organization entails the ways in which hunter-gatherers shape, make, use, maintain, recycle, and discard stone tools. Those decision-making processes are dependent upon the mode of occupation and land-use patterns. These issues are widely discussed in both ethnographic and Paleolithic literature; however, it has rarely been demonstrated technologically in Lower Paleolithic contexts. In this paper, using the case study of the Late Lower Paleolithic site of Holon in Israel, I address questions regarding the selection of particular curational strat- egies differently employed for various parts of the assemblage. Tool maintenance and the byproducts of such strategies will be described and articulated within the organization of technology at Holon. In addition, I will examine the micro-environmental setting in which these curational behaviors exist. In Holon, the complexity of the curational organization can be regarded as a chosen tactic, rather than an obligatory response to a deficiency in raw material. Thus, the results of this study exemplify how possible functional needs modify the known techo- typological repertoire. The nature of this interplay has rarely been described within Middle Pleistocene contexts. INTRODUCTION retain only those aspects associated with mobility and set- ithic technologies can serve as proxies of the organiza- tlement patterning. Another complicating aspect that needs Ltional aspects of adaptive strategies in hunter-gather- to be considered in regard to the concept of curation is that er societies.

Barshay-Szmidt, Laura Eizenberg and Marianne Deschamps 1- Introduction 1 Gatzarria Cave is an important site for many reasons regarding the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition.
