Read our updates below to learn more about our own initiative, as well as collaborative efforts with other organizations. 1. Sick Cells met with 7 Congressional offices and expects to meet with at least one more to discuss a potential FY22 Congressional hearing on the 2020 NASEM Report on SCD. This brings our total number of meetings with offices to over 50 for 2021. Offices targeted in our July outreach include: a. Rep. Bill Foster b. Rep. Danny Davis c. Rep. Bobby Rush d. Rep. Barbara Lee e. Rep. G.K. Butterfield f. Rep. Michael Burgess g. Rep. Terri Sewell h. Rep. Robin Kelly Conversations with these offices have yielded a positive response to this initiative. Continuing discussions will focus on determining how to best work with other Members, agencies, and community-based organizations to maintain momentum on this report and its associated programs. 2. Sick Cells attended ASH’s quarterly policy meeting a. As a member organization of the American Society of Hematology’s SCD Coalition, Sick Cells continues to build relationships and collaborate on policy issues. 3. NORD announced a new RDAC in Louisiana a. Sick Cells was a signing organization on the RDAC request letters in Louisiana. The council is currently recruiting members. ILLINOIS CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION 117th Congress Two Senators represent each state in the U.S. Senate and are elected to serve six-year terms. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) of Springfield was elected to represent Illinois for a fifth term in 2020. Tammy Duckworth of Hoffman Estates (D) was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. (See pages 16-19 for U.S. Senator photos and biographies.) In the November 2020 general election, Illinois voters elected 18 candidates to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives for two-year terms. Thirteen Democratic and five Republican U.S. Representatives were elected to serve in the 117th Congress. The November 2020 general election was historical, with the most women ever elect- ed to serve in Congress. Democrat Marie Newman and Republican Mary Miller — repre- senting districts that were previously held by men — added to the increase of female Representatives. Newman definitively won the general election to represent the 13th District after defeating 16-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinksi (D) in the March pri- mary. Miller won the 15th District seat that was previously held by U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R), who served 12 terms in Congress and opted not to run for reelection. Since 1818, Illinois has had a total of 20 female U.S. Representatives. In 2021, seven are currently rep- resenting our state — a record-breaking total. This funding was a vital first step, but we will need to do more to help Americans stay informed and connected during this crisis. We urge you to include at least $2 billion in dedicated fiscal stabilization funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in the next COVID-19 response bill. Libraries are vital institutions not just for the resources they provide the American people, but the economic value they bring to communities, rural, suburban and urban. According to IMLS, Americans make more than 1.3 billion visits to public libraries each year. Libraries employ nearly 370,000 American workers and generate billions of dollars in economic activity, including the purchase of $4 billion in books and other materials annually. With libraries across the nation taking necessary steps to safeguard their employees and communities by closing their doors to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, we should do all we can to ensure library services continue, remotely for now and in-person in the future. Without an immediate robust infusion of federal support, libraries will be forced to make massive cuts, both in terms of staffing and purchases. These cuts would ripple throughout our communities, impacting support for education, workforce recovery, and access to computers and the Internet.

Durbin also serves as the Assistant Democratic Leader, the second highest ranking position among the Senate Democrats. Also known as the Minority Whip, Senator Durbin has been elected to this leadership post by his Democratic colleagues every two years since 2005.
