While these studies elaborate on the effect rapidly expanding public aid had on literary production of the period, many have tended to undervalue the lingering influence on midcentury storytelling of private charity and philanthropy, those traditional aid institutions fundamentally challenged by the Great Depression and historically championed by conservatives. If the welfare state had an indelible impact on US literatures, so did the moral complexity of the systems of charity and philanthropy it purportedly replaced. In my dissertation, I theorize modern charity as a cultural narrative that found expression in a number of different writers from the start of the Great Depression and into the early 1960s, including Harold Gray, Ralph Ellison, W.E.B. Du Bois, Flannery O'Connor, and Dorothy Day. Rachel Carr has always been a friend, whether waiting too long for hotel pizza or iii having lunch at the same time as me every day without us planning. Kyle and Alex Eveleth taught me how to layer in cold weather and were always there to help. Jake Ferrington is a fountain of positive energy and helpfulness, and an excellent baker and dog walker to boot. Catherine Brereton and Susan Stewart were always there for advice on parenting teenagers, baking inspiration, and lovely conversation. I will always remember talking with Noor Alattar about the paradoxes of American democracy and how our families were doing. I think I learn something helpful every time I speak with Claire Lenviel, whose work ethic and intellect give me something to aspire to. Alex Menrisky was a reliably good reader, excellent neighbor, and pleasant cubicle mate. Bianca Spriggs is brilliant and a fabulous teaching group partner whose coloring book is my daughter’s favorite. Cate Gooch’s comments on an early draft were so convincing that I completely scrapped and rewrote the entire thing. Katie Waddell taught me how to fold cloth napkins, let my visiting family stay in her apartment during a blizzard, and was always willing to talk to me. Anyone would be lucky to have Craig Crowder as their neighborhood socialist and baseball buddy. Craig Slaven and Ben Wilson was always fun to talk to about Jesus and them southern books. President Jenna Goldsmith always made sure I paid attention to the important things. Hurray for two reasons: who doesn’t look forward to the promise of warmer days ahead, and who doesn’t appreciate the sweetness of pure maple syrup dribbled over a stack of pancakes? Yet, how many of us are aware that we could be tapping our own maple trees about now–if we are fortunate enough to have maples on our property? A recent program about everything you ever wanted to know about maple sugar farming was recently presented at the Deep River County Park Visitor Center by Historic Programs Coordinator Joanna Shearer, and the Beacher was there to learn and pass on a few tips for maple sugaring wannabes. Let’s get the trivia out of the way and tell you right now that Vermont is NOT the number one state for maple sugar pro- duction. New York claims that title. But here in the Midwest, Michigan ranks high as a maple syrup producer. Parke County Indiana, home of the most covered bridges, is a large syrup-producing area. And locally, Deep River Park produced nearly 500 bottles of the sweet syrup last year.

Photo: WPA The Great Depression was an economic crisis that began in 1929. Many people had invested money in the stock market and when it crashed they lost much of the money they had invested. People stopped spending money and investing. Banks did not have enough money, which led many people to lose their savings. Many Americans lost money, their homes and their jobs. Homeless Americans began to build their own camps on the edges of cities, where they lived in shacks and other crude shelters. These areas were known as shantytowns. As the Depression got worse, many Americans asked the U.S. government for help. When the government failed to provide relief, the people blamed President Herbert Hoover for their poverty. The shantytowns became known as Hoovervilles. In 1932, Hoover lost the presidential election to Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt created programs that helped lift the U.S. out of the Depression. By the early 1940s, most remaining Hoovervilles were torn down.     POP CULTURE clusively with daytime. The show features no gunfights or car chases; there are moments of leisurely, uneventful conversation between the younger and older generations. It is a curious inversion: Where once daytime TV fled prime time, prime time now copies daytime. The evidence is every- where, from the success of The Forsyte Saga and Upstairs Down- stairs (soap operas with extra starch) to major television serials like Rich Man Poor Man, Roots, and Captains and Kings. Spec- taculars aside, even a regular offering such as Family reflects a soap-opera sense of continuity. The major characters suffer. They have affairs, consider marriage, drop out of school, worry about mortality It goes too far to say that daytime dramas are genuinely realistic. The necessities of the form require too many brushes with the kinds of crises that most families would suffer only a few times in a generation. But both soaps and game shows have certainly tried to move television closer to what Paddy Chayefsky called "the marvelous world of the ordinary." What daytime TV has given prime time is the possibility of exploring characters not through the prism of fantasy, but through a focus closer to the way most of us spend our lives. And that is no mean contribution. TAKING COMICS SERIOUSLY by Arthur Asa Berger New art forms are often greeted with derision. Doctoral Dissertations. 466. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/466 Rough and Ready Relief: American Identity, Humanitarian Experience, and the Commission for Relief in Belgium, 1914-1917 Thomas David Westerman, Ph.D. University of Connecticut, 2014 This dissertation examines a group of American men who adopted and adapted notions of American power for humanitarian ends in German-occupied Belgium with the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB) during World War I. The CRB, led by Herbert Hoover, controlled the importation of relief goods and provided supervision of the Belgian-led relief distribution. The young, college-educated American men who volunteered for this relief work between 1914 and 1917 constructed an effective and efficient humanitarian space for themselves by drawing not only on the power of their neutral American citizenship, but on their collectively understood American-ness as able, active, yet responsible young men serving abroad, thereby developing an alternative tool—the use of humanitarian aid—for the use and projection of American power in the early twentieth century. Drawing on their letters, diaries, recollections as well as their official reports on their work and the situation in Belgium, this dissertation argues that the early twentieth century formation of what we today understand to be non-state, international humanitarianism was partially established by Americans exercising explicit and implicit national power during the years of American neutrality in World War I.
