Twitter is an online social networking/microblogging service that allows users to send and receive 140- character messages (Tweets). It's a quick and easy way to read, share, and comment on the latest news (“what’s happening”) related to subjects you care about.

History

Twitter started in 2006 and gained widespread popularity in 2008. The service came about because the founders wanted to find a way to send text messages between computers, much in the same way that they had been sending messages between their mobile phones. They wanted these messages to also be seen on , so they used the same protocols as the text messaging (SMS) services provided by AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.

The mobile phone companies use a control signal that’s 140 characters in length that tells cell phone towers to switch a call from one tower to another as the user moves to different locations (thus the 140 character limit.) When someone sends a Tweet it travels over the Internet and via cell phone towers to reach users on computers, Smartphones, and tablets.

Twitter tips

15

Intro to Social Media: Twitter  When you first create your account, your username (ex: @marthastewart) becomes part of your Twitter URL (http://twitter.com/marthastewart).  Your Twitter URL links directly to your profile page and is the easiest and quickest way for others to find you on Twitter.  Make sure you email this URL out to your fans, and share it whenever you talk about Twitter.  People who go to this URL and sign up for Twitter will start following you automatically. Use this link whenever possible to promote your presence on Twitter and gain more followers!

Make sure you appear in Search  Twitter user search ranks results for every user by name, username, and the bio on your profile.  In order for your account to appear in search results, make sure your username, real name, and bio are all filled out and contain key words that you would like to be associated with your Twitter account.  It is also important to tweet, retweet, and mention regularly to gain resonance amongst your followers so that search results are up to date. o Note that user search results are updated daily, so it may take 1-2 days for any changes to your name, username, to affect results for a given search term.

Find and follow others  It’s best to begin your journey by finding and following other interesting Twitter accounts. Look for businesses you love, public service accounts, people you know, celebrities, or news sources you read.  A good way to find more interesting accounts is see who those you know or admire are following.

Frequently check your account  Messages from others you follow will show up in a readable stream on your homepage timeline. Once you've followed a few people, you'll have a new page of information to read each time you log in. Click links in others' Tweets to view: photos and videos they have posted, the profiles of users mentioned in their message, or Tweets related to a hashtag (#) keyword they used.

Use your mobile device  One of the best things about Twitter is that it’s portable. Connect your account to your mobile phone or download a Twitter application to begin reading Tweets on the go. You can get updates about traffic problems in the middle of your commute, find out what the players are saying while you’re at the game, or catch up on the buzz about an event you’re about to attend. The possibilities are endless!  Using Twitter via SMS allows you to pick and choose which updates you want from those you follow, so you can get mobile updates from the accounts that matter to your life on-the-go.

Build a voice by retweeting, replying, and reacting  Use other people’s tweets to find your own voice and show others what you care about. Retweet messages you particularly connect with, or reply with your reaction to a Tweet you find interesting.  If you're a new user, others are more likely to notice your messages if they are retweets or replies.

Mention others  Consider mentioning other users by their Twitter username (preceded by the @ sign) in your Tweets. Twitter users like being mentioned! Try posting a message mentioning a celebrity or person you admire – they often respond to fans. You’ll see their response on your Mentions tab.
