Biking beats hiking

Bicycle popularity has taken on new dimensions at Ball State with the rapidly expanding campus and warm spring weather. Once shunned as a mode of transportation and sport, hundreds of bikes may be seen in front of residence halls and classroom buildings. Shared equally by males and females, undergrads and graduates, faculty and students, the bikes offer a common solution to the tight automobile parking situation.

Photographs: 1. "Wanna race 7' lhe popu larity of bikes has increased, in part, because of the growing campus and the distance be tween buildings. Some find it necessary to hitchhike or pedal just to make it to class on time. 2. Campus police suggest all bicycles be locked when unattended. lhe police provide a registration service to help recover stolen bikes. lhe service Is Intended to help reduce the number of :stolon bikos which numbered 198 last year. 3. Locking the bikes is aimed at preventing thefts, but the owner of this sporty model came out of class to find the rear wheel missing. 4. Observing bicycling courtesy, this coed walks her multi-speed bike across campus. cyclists normally use the streets and uncon gested sidewalks since no paths have been provided. 1 2 3
