Ong Xiong, a 43-year-old Cottage Grove woman, is facing felony charges for drug possession. According to the criminal complaint, on Jan. 15 a Pine County Sheriff ’s Offi ce deputy was on a routine patrol on Tigua Road outside Pine City when he observed two vehicles leaving what was described in the report as “a known drug house.” One vehicle immediately pulled back into the driveway, but the other vehicle, a Honda Pilot, kept going. The deputy noticed the vehicle drifting over the fog line numerous times and also noticed a crack in the windshield. The vehicle turned on to Interstate 35 heading north where a traffi c stop was initiated.

BY LANCELOT E FURBER [email protected]

The Dragon Wrestling team headed to Mora for the Section 7AA Individual tournament on Friday, Feb. 21st & 22nd. Sophomore Tim Johnson qualifi ed for the MN State Wrestling Tournament this next weekend. Qualify- ing in dramatic fashion, Johnson lost his semifi nal match to the eventual champion Andy Knutson of Foley; howev- er he was able to wrestle back for a true second match. “Tim had a great day of intense matches it’s great to see him advance to the 2020 State Wrestling Tournament,” said coach Milo Allen. Heavy weight Jeb Wimmer also had a great tournament as he fi nished in fourth place. Wimmer has worked very hard this year and ended his season with a 15-14 record. He will be back next year to wrestle for the Dragons as a junior. Gavin Rockstroh navigated a very tough 138 pound weight class to earn fi fth place. Rochstroh lost to the eventual runner up in the semi fi nals and had to wrestle back for the fi fth placed fi nish. Overall he had a great season and fi nishes his sophomore year with a 17-10 record. This year the Dragons brought 12 wrestlers to compete in the two day state qualifi er. They had a large number of young guys this year who have stepped up in the varsity ranks. “All season we’ve been a young team and it’s been a large learning curve for many of the guys,” said Allen. A few Dragons who stepped up this year were Braxton Peetz, a seventh grader who took on the role of 106 pound- er. “Braxton did a great job coming in and learning what it meant to be a varsity wrestler,” Allen said. Others who came in to fi ll varsity weight classes in- cluded John Mead, Levi Johnson, Damion Torgerson & Collin Verret. All four of these Dragon athletes worked hard and earned the opportunity to wrestle in the tourna- ment this past weekend. The Dragons wrestled hard and fi nished the season strong.

Saturday Feb. 22, was a night Pine City hockey fans may never forget. It was the fi rst time the Dragons have ever hosted a section-semi-fi nal game. It was also the fi rst time fans had to be turned away because the Pine City Civic Center was fi lled to capacity, as family, friends and fans gathered as the Dragons defeated Chisago Lakes to advance to the section fi nals. This game did not disappoint. It was everything you expect from great high school hockey. It had everything: great goaltending, big hits, drama, goal scoring, special team plays, crowd involvement and even a Parker Sell “Hat Trick” on a short-handed goal. The game started with the Dragons scoring fi rst. Unfortunately, just seconds later goalie Alex was hit by a Chisago Lakes player as a weird shot from the corner hit him and bounced in. Still in the fi rst, Chisago Lakes netted a power play goal to go up 2-1. With just fi ve seconds left in the fi rst period, the Dragons answered scoring a power play goal of their own. The second period was dominated by the Drag- ons. With around two minutes left in the second period, Parker Sell to net his “Hat Tick (scoring of three goals in one game by a single player), on a short-handed goal. “This was the spark that we needed going into the third,” said coach Grant Nicoll. “The boys were electric in the locker room, and could not wait to get back out on the ice for the third.” Just a few minutes into the third period, George Miller netted a power play goal before Chisago Lakes could even touch the puck. This gave the Dragons a two goal lead. “A two goal lead, which some would say is the hardest lead to keep. I personally would take a 2 goal lead over a 1 goal lead any day’, said coach Nicoll. Late in the third period, Chisago Lakes again scored a goofy goal as the puck was going close to fi ve feet wide of the net and hit a player defl ected in through the pipes. The Dragons were able to dominate the remainder of the third period and the score stood at 4-3. The Dragons are now on to the section fi nal game on Thursday, Feb. 27, down in Blaine at Fogerty LANCE FURBER | THE PIONEER Arena for the fi rst time since 2002. They won a huge game, but it was the last game they will ever play in the PCCC. If I were to pick a way to fi nish, that is how I would script it,’ said coach Nicoll. “I could go on and on about these boys and the atmosphere, but I need to get ready for Thursday” Chisago Lakes 2 0 1 = 3 Pine City 2 1 1 = 4 Scoring Parker Sell - 3g (The Hatty) George Miller - 1g, 1a Seth Linnell - 2a Alex Laven - 26 saves on 29 shots WCMP will be streaming video for the Section 5A Championship game on Thursday night. PINE CITY 85, ONAMIA 39 On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Pine City boys basket- ball hosted Onamia and came away with a 85-39 victory. Pine City was really working on getting themselves ready for the playoffs; this included their rotation and preparation. Onamia had the best player on the fl oor in Josh Parrow and the Dragons knew they would have to give special attention to him. “He is a very talented basketball player who has an impressive skill set,” said coach Kyle Allen. “Luckily for us, we have some guys who LANCE FURBER | THE PIONEER take great pride in being Dylan Petersen tries to take aim while evading a stubborn Onamia defender. defensive stoppers.” Caleb Fromm and Tan- ner Wicktor got the green light to guard Parrow and they did a great job of chasing him around the court all night. In the fi rst half, it was an even game most of the time.
