When the dominos began to fall in March and closures started, my initial reaction had been to hunker down and wait it out, thinking that we would be back to normal within a few months. We’re now six months in and the end is not yet in sight. We cannot go back to normal and so must find new ways to build and sustain community. I am happy to report that resourceful Windsor Park neighbours are finding ways to do just that. We have enjoyed musical events in parks and on front porches. Driveway wine tastings. Business meetings in the park. Socially distanced yard parties. Some have been sponsored or promoted by the community league, but many more have been spontaneous acts of neighbourliness. As these events have taken off, I admit to having been hesitant to offer official community league support, not wanting to promote potentially unsafe interactions. I am happy that my worries were groundless as we’ve always responsibly maintained safe social distancing throughout. I’m now the biggest fan! Although the onset of cooler weather will change what can be offered, I want to encourage Windsor Park neighbours to think of creative new ways to bring people together safely. Small or large, you will have the support of the community league and we’ll help get the word out. Neighbourhood Connector Penny Tucker, leader of Windsor Park’s Abundant Community Edmonton (ACE) effort, is a golden resource for new ideas and planning help. And Communications Director Gail Powley has provided invaluable support to WP neighbours with her periodic eNews bulletins. The work of the league continues despite difficulties in meeting in person in our usual space. The Executive has been meeting online and outdoors. We continue to follow several development issues including building code variance requests and bylaw complaints. The heritage street signs are being prepared for installation in the fall. There are many Covid safety concerns about re-opening the hall for limited use that require careful study and attention. We should be able to open the rink as usual, although there will likely be some precautions that must be observed. Although we can’t say when, I remain hopeful that we’ll soon be able to resume normal programming We’ll soon be scheduling our Annual General Meeting where we will elect members of the Executive. Please contact me if you might like to stand for election, or help with the mission of the league in another capacity. The league then also raised the possibility of demand for renting parking spaces on residential property given the neighbourhood’s proximity to the university. While the changes to parking were approved by City Council effective July 1, 2020, Councillor Henderson’s follow up motion to review the impact of the bylaw change on parking in residential areas near traffic generators also was approved. Meantime there should be less demand for parking near sports facilities and post-secondary institutions this year because of changes as a result of Covid. Zoning Bylaw Renewal: The City is
