Aya Medany Oly Becomes Member of Egyptian Parliament
19 JAN 2021 AYA MEDANY OLY BECOMES MEMBER OF EGYPTIAN PARLIAMENT Three-time Olympian and leading athlete ambassador Aya Medany OLY has begun a new career in politics after being appointed as a Member of the Egyptian Parliament. The appointment by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is the latest accolade for Medany (EGY), who is Chair of the UIPM Athletes Committee and sits on two Commissions within the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The former pentathlete, who competed in her first Olympic Games aged 15 (Athens 2004) and went on to compete at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, is a strong advocate for equal representation and rights in sport. Mrs Medany, who also works as a university lecturer assistant took the constitutional oath in the Egyptian Parliament in Cairo on January 12, embarking on a five-year term of service as a national politician. UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann led the tributes to the UIPM Executive Board Member, saying: “I was so delighted to get a call on January 7 from Sharif Elerian, President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation, to inform me that Aya had just been appointed as one of 100 members of the Parliament from the President of Egypt. “Immediately I called Aya and congratulated her and she said ‘you are the first person giving me congratulations. You called before my family and friends!’ “On behalf of the global Modern Pentathlon community I would like to express my deep respect and pride in Aya’s achievements, and I wish her a lot of success in this new political carrier. -
Aleksander Lesun Is the New World Champion
07 SEP 2014 WARSAW 2014 - ALEKSANDER LESUN IS THE NEW WORLD CHAMPION Aleksander LESUN (Russia) confirmed his status as the world's leading male pentathlete by winning Gold today in the Men's Individual event at the Warsaw 2014 Modern Pentathlon World Championships. Already ranked No.1 in the New Balance World Rankings, 26-year-old Lesun extended his lead as he completed a magical year in the perfect fashion in the Polish capital. The Belarus-born Russian had already won gold at the 2014 World Cup Finals and 2014 European Championships. In fact, Lesun now has three World Championship titles to his name, having won the Men's Individual event in Rome in 2012 and gold in the Team event a year earlier, in Moscow. After the disappointment of the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he finished fourth, he has responded like a true champion this year to achieve total domination. After receiving his Gold medal, Lesun (Rus) admitted that his next major goal was to win the Olympic Modern Pentathlon title, currently held by David Svoboda of Czech Republic, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He said: "I am knocking on the door of David Svoboda. I'm looking at Rio 2016. That's my plan." Lesun (Rus) had to pass a major examination of his fitness, concentration and composure to pull off this victory, with Amro El Geziry (Egypt) keeping him under very close observation all day. El Geziry won Silver and the Bronze went to Jan Kuf (Czech Republic), a result that rewarded two athletes who had been ranked outside the top 10 before coming to Poland. -
