However, potential risks on the ships that were not under IMO regime should be concerned more seriously especially after the two Asian casualties of Eastern Star and Sewol occurred in recent years. The purpose of this research is to apply a recognized accident investigation method to identify and analyse the causes of these tragedies and give some recommendations based on the outcome of the research. After comparing with several popular investigation methods, AcciMap was chosen as a harmonized approach to make the research due to its advantages in organizational factors analysis and corresponding recommendations exportation. The research contributes progresses in the application of AcciMap in two significant events and provided some measures to prevent repetitions of such disasters. However, further research is needed to further develop the method due to the constraints in the approach itself but also due to weakness in information collection and research limitations as well.
