Boxing, Governance and Western Law
An Outlaw Practice: Boxing, Governance and Western Law Ian J*M. Warren A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Human Movement, Performance and Recreation Victoria University 2005 FTS THESIS 344.099 WAR 30001008090740 Warren, Ian J. M An outlaw practice : boxing, governance and western law Abstract This investigation examines the uses of Western law to regulate and at times outlaw the sport of boxing. Drawing on a primary sample of two hundred and one reported judicial decisions canvassing the breadth of recognised legal categories, and an allied range fight lore supporting, opposing or critically reviewing the sport's development since the beginning of the nineteenth century, discernible evolutionary trends in Western law, language and modern sport are identified. Emphasis is placed on prominent intersections between public and private legal rules, their enforcement, paternalism and various evolutionary developments in fight culture in recorded English, New Zealand, United States, Australian and Canadian sources. Fower, governance and regulation are explored alongside pertinent ethical, literary and medical debates spanning two hundred years of Western boxing history. & Acknowledgements and Declaration This has been a very solitary endeavour. Thanks are extended to: The School of HMFR and the PGRU @ VU for complete support throughout; Tanuny Gurvits for her sharing final submission angst: best of sporting luck; Feter Mewett, Bob Petersen, Dr Danielle Tyson & Dr Steve Tudor; -

GOODWIN: Pinklon Thomas Sr., dad of ex-heavyweight champ, celebrates 100th birthday Page 1 of 2 The Daily Tribune (http://www.dailytribune.com) GOODWIN: Pinklon Thomas Sr., dad of ex-heavyweight champ, celebrates 100th birthday Thursday, May 22, 2014 One hundred years ago, the great heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis was born in Alabama. A few days after he was born, Pinklon Thomas Sr. was born, also in Alabama, before moving to Pontiac in the 1940s. There’s a connection here, even though Pinklon Thomas Sr. never boxed in his life. But his son sure did — that’s Pinklon Thomas Jr. — and he eventually won the heavyweight boxing championship, just like Joe Louis did. While Louis left us a long time ago, Pinklon Sr. is still with us, as a host of relatives, friends and supporters helped him observe his 100th birthday last Sunday at Franklin Road Church of Christ in Pontiac. “It was a fantastic day,” said Pinklon Jr., who spent the evening “kicking it with Boss Man.” Indeed, the tributes poured in for Pinklon Sr., a centenarian, U.S. Army veteran and one of a family of 16 children. He has lived through more than a dozen presidential administrations. Mattie McKinney Hatchett, a member of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel, boxing’s first lady Jackie Kallen, former manager of a number of world boxing champions, and Pontiac Mayor Dr. Deirdre Waterman made appearances and gave their tributes. “She (Waterman) was really, really so nice,” said Pinklon Jr., who did a lot of the grunt work in putting the occasion together, much of which was a long distance production from his home in Orlando, Fla. -
