    Malibu 90265 Introduction by Taylor Coffman FROM THE SANTA MONICA PIER, it’s a six-mile drive up Pacific Coast Highway to Tuna Canyon Road. Not far along this northwest-to- westerly route lies the site of the Beach House, as William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies called their grand mansion of the 1920s and ’30s, once the film colony’s most palatial home. Past that, in Pacific Palisades, lies the Bel-Air Bay Club; and then PCH reaches Sunset Boulevard, the world’s only street so-named. On the ocean side is the fish restaurant known as Gladstone’s Malibu. But it’s a false start: the border of that famous town lies almost a mile ahead still. Thelma Todd’s house and the section of Pacific Palisades called Castellammare are next; tucked away nearby, invisible from the main road, is the Getty Villa (J. Paul Getty greatly admired Hearst). Then comes the more working-class enclave of Sunset Mesa, or Parker Mesa. Right past it is the last part of what, overall, amounts to outlying Los Angeles and its coveted Westside, namely, the place where Topanga Canyon Boulevard reaches Topanga State Beach, once a Bohemian seaside haunt but now a bittersweet memory. Go another half mile, past the City of Malibu sign, and watch for a larger sign next to Tuna Canyon Road. It announces “Malibu 27 Miles of Scenic Beauty.” Years ago, in this same spirit of local pride, the old Malibu Township was often said to extend for twenty-six miles. In reality, twenty-nine miles (and even closer to thirty) is more like it in embracing the total Malibu coastline, the long shorefront of what I like to call greater Malibu, the storied land of postal ZIP code 90265.

Mount Etna is another volcano in the Campanian arc. It is Europe’s most active volcano. Mount Vesuvius last erupted in 1944. This was during the Second World War and the eruption caused great problems for the newly arrived Allied forces. Aircraft were destroyed, an airbase was evacuated and 26 people died. Three villages were also destroyed. 1944 was the last recorded eruption but scientists continue to monitor activity as Mount Vesuvius is especially dangerous. Did you know..? Street In ancient Pompeii, there were many types of entertainment. One popular pastime was the theatre where people went to watch plays. This theatre had space for 1,000 spectators. Odeon – small theatre The Romans worshipped many gods. This temple is dedicated to Apollo, the god of music, and was built on a high platform to make it look more impressive. Temple of Apollo The House of the Vettii was one of the most impressive and richly decorated houses in Pompeii. It was named after the owners, Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus. House of the Vettii The Romans use mosaics to decorate wealthy houses and public buildings. Each mosaic used thousands of tesserae (small pieces of tile or stone) to create a picture or pattern. Mosaic Another popular way of decorating rooms was with wall paintings (frescoes). This one, in the Casa del Menandro (House of Menander) shows a hunting party. Can you see the dogs and the man with a bow and arrow? Paintings in Casa del Menandro Myths and legends were a common source of inspiration for Roman artists. This painting depicts Narcissus who was so beautiful that he fell in love with his own reflection.     Villa Monterey Townhouse Historic District Historic Significance and Integrity Assessment Report Background In March of 2007, representatives of the Villa Monterey 1-9 Homeowners Associations initially contacted the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) about designating their townhome neighborhood as a historic district. The residents were advised that no research and analysis had been undertaken on townhouses and their historic development in Scottsdale to date. Consequently, there was no basis for making judgments about the relative significance, integrity and, consequently, eligibility for designation of the Villa Monterey neighborhood on the Scottsdale Historic Register. The homeowners shared information they had gathered about the history and importance of their townhouse neighborhood, offered support in further research work and urged the HPC’s consideration of their request. The HPC decided to include efforts to evaluate this historic residential population as part of their annual work program and directed staff to begin work on a context study related to the historic influences its development. An historic context report was completed by Linnea Caproni, an ASU public history graduate student, in 2009. As the work on the historic context report was being finalized, a city-wide survey was initiated of the existing townhouse developments, which were built during the period 1950 -1974, to identify the best representative examples of the historic influences and architecture that distinguishes this property type. The survey field work was conducted by Historic Preservation (HP) staff, program interns and the HPC. Some 5871 townhouses were studied as part of this work. These townhomes were located in fifty-six separate development complexes that were made up of eighty-one recorded subdivision plats.

LOS ANGELES—The Art of Ancient Greek Theater, on view at the Getty Villa from August 26, 2010 – January 3, 2011, is the first exhibition in the United States in over fifty years to focus on the artistic representation of theatrical performance in ancient Greece. Assembling international loans of antiquities from many museums and private collections, the exhibition illustrates the ways in which dramatic performance was depicted in the visual arts of ancient Greece between the fifth and the first centuries B.C. The exhibition is being presented in conjunction with the Getty Villa’s annual outdoor theater performance, Sophocles’ Elektra. “Ancient art and theater share a strong and enduring connection–one that is inspired by mythology and the social, cultural, and political realities of life in ancient Greece and Rome,” says David Bomford, acting director of the J.
