    Updated 4/1/11 for release 7.2 Getting Started with Smaart® v7: Basic Setup and Measurement This guide is an introduction to the basic measurement and operational concepts embodied in Rational Acoustics’ Smaart® v7. While in no way an exhaustive study, this document serves as a starting point for users to familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of Smaart’s single- and dual-channel capabilities, and provide instruction in the configuration and operation of basic measurement setups. Regardless of past measurement experience with previous versions of Smaart, or other analysis systems, users should take the time to familiarize themselves with the process of Configuring Smaart v7 for Measurement detailed in this document. Unlike previous versions which assumed a simple two-channel I/O, Smaart v7 can interface with multiple I/O devices simultaneously, each with multiple input and output channels. Accordingly, Smaart v7 makes no assumptions about a user’s measurement requirements and upon first run, begins its operation un-configured. As in previous versions however, following initial setup, Smaart retains its measurement configuration for subsequent sessions. Please note: in the case of the free/public demo version of the software, the Smaart measurement configuration is not retained from session to session, and must be rebuilt for each new session. Consider it practice. This guide assumes a reader with a basic understanding of professional audio equipment and engineering practices. It concludes with a list of recommended additional sources of information where users can further their understanding of these concepts. As such, this document serves as a concise step-by-step instructional guide to acquire measurement data, followed by several application-based examples. For in-depth explanations of the various program functions and controls, please refer to the in-app Help Files as well as the Smaart v8 User Manual, which contains extensive information parallel to Smaart Di. Please refer to the Smaart Di v2 Licensing Help Guide for instructions registering your license and activating the software. The Licensing Help Guide is availaBle in the Support section on the Rational Acoustics weBsite under “Smaart Di v2 Documentation”. 1) After launching Di, select your input device from the Input Device drop-list menu. Your device must Be connected and powered on before Smaart is launched to be recognized by the application. 2) If you are using Smaart’s integrated Signal Generator, route its output By accessing the Signal Generator Options (Options > Signal Generator or [Alt/Opt + N]) dialog and select your device and appropriate output channels. 3) The first two inputs of your selected device will auto-assign to Di’s 2 Spectrum engines. Use the in-engine drop-list menu if re-assignment is needed. The Spectrum engines correspond to the Measurement (Green) and Reference (Blue) inputs of the Transfer Function pair. 4) Use your mouse (or other pointing device) to select the triangular Run Button to begin generating Spectrum data. The circular Button to the left of the Run Button represents that engine’s trace color and show/hide state.

Measurement Configurations Figure 1 Device or Signal Measurement System Under Source System Test The block diagram in Figure 1 illustrates the basic configuration for both transfer function and delay locator measurements. Note that the signal is not generated by the computer. Typically a CD player or noise generator is used as a signal source for playback systems and/or during initial setup of a sound reinforcement system. During a live performance, the output of the sound reinforcement system console itself can be used as the signal source (see Figure 3 on page 2).
