The “Mighty Handful” were five composer friends, including Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Their music tells stories from Russian history and folktales in operas, ballets, and purely musical works that helped make their nation’s culture unique and distinct. In the opinion of these architect-critics, the so-called Ostankinshchina style (named after the late 17th-century Church of the Trinity at Ostankino) seemed to deform the aesthetic purity of medieval Russian church architecture, even as it lessened the spiritual meaning of the church itself. In response, a number of architects, such as Aleksei Shchusev and Vladimir Pokrovskii, explored new paths in church design by combining a study of early medieval Russian forms with new technological methods. They were titled ‘Farewell to St. Petersburg’. Not only was Mily Balakirev great friends with Glinka, but he was also greatly influenced by the composer. Of the compositions Balakirev paraphrased, Skylark is unequivocally his most famous with its extraordinarily beautiful yet intrinsically sad melody. Whilst teaching at the Moscow Conservatory in 1873, Tchaikovsky completed a collection of six pieces titled, Six Morceaux, Op.19. The last of those six is the ‘Variations on an Original Theme’ in F major. A set of twelve variations, the piece itself is quite compact. Predominantly noteworthy is the eleventh variation which Tchaikovsky titles Alla Schumann, paying homage to one of his favourite composers. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is nothing short of exciting. Regarded as the composer’s most famous piano work, it has influenced many different orchestrations and arrangements of the piece by other composers.

Performing it on stage remains the most insightful source for understanding the work and its complex beauty. Through playing it more and more, my perception of Pictures became more concrete and detailed. At the same time, it was clear how firmly it could withstand different interpretations. This work can be approached in infinite ways in order to solve the technical challenges and to accomplish the ultimate goal of holding the piece together on the stage. Mussorgsky’s cycle stands alone in its grandeur and truly represents the enigmatic nature of Russian music. His “unpolished” style of writing – Mussorgsky was considered an amateur by his distinguished colleagues such as Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – contributes to the dramatic effect of the composition. Vladimir Ashkenazy, in his preface to the Wiener Urtext edition of Pictures at an Exhibition, perfectly sums up the profundity and importance of the work: Perhaps the most important and crucial point in understanding this piece is that although it was conceived initially as a programmatic cycle, the result is music that not only goes far beyond mere descriptive qualities but in fact gives us a penetrating insight into the dark and brooding spirit of Mussorgsky - or for that matter of Russia itself.
