Will the Circle Be Unbroken? Will the Circle Be Unbroken? Will the Circle Be Unbroken? Bringing Bluegrass to the Masses, Circle Media Thrives as Modern Music Television By Stephen Pitalo Television has long been a source for older generations to receive great music that speaks to their heritage, while also catering to younger music fans by introducing them to classic country music as well as modern takes on traditional bluegrass. That connectivity has brought bluegrass to the masses for decades, from the early days of television showcases through the era where Porter Waggoner, Johnny Cash, and the Mandrell Sisters all hosted their network programs. Picking up the torch for that mission is Circle Media, which also serves as the best example of two great companies combining to serve one monumental vision. Opry Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc., and Gray Television teamed up to create a premium linear television and OTT (over-the-top) streaming channel dedicated to celebrating country music and the country lifestyle, and bluegrass programming have become a thriving component of that combination, now known as Circle Media. “The Opry and Gray TV saw an opportunity in the marketplace to ‘super-serve’ country music and country lifestyle fans,” explained Teresa George, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships for Circle. Gray’s extensive distribution network in key markets all over the United States works in tandem with the tremendous library of current and heritage content that Ryman Hospitality has been acquiring and preserving for decades. This synergy of artist relationships, iconic venues, and music industry connections proved invaluable. Circle Media and Circle TV currently serve the bluegrass music fans across the country by carrying The Dailey & Vincent Show and other programming with a bluegrass flair. “We are proud to present programming that features prominent bluegrass artists, including Opry Live, Backstage at the Opry, as well as Ditty TV’s Americana Connection and Concert Series,” said George. Bluegrass fans can access great music and performance content that includes Authentic America, Backstage at the Opry, Honky Tonk Ranch, Better Half, Craig’s World, My Opry Debut, Songs from the Cellar, The Southern Weekend, and Stand Up Nashville! Viewers can also watch episodes of the legendary series that brought country and bluegrass to television audiences across the country and around the world, Hee Haw! Having seen the potential for highlighting country music artists and the passions, hobbies, and love of the music they share with their fans, Circle Media began providing programming for country fans and opportunities for artists like the media landscape has never experienced before. “The future for Circle? To continue to create more quality programming and continue to increase our distribution so that more people have access to it,” said George of the more- than-100 affiliates (and growing) across the country that carry Circle Media. And as for the current COVID-19 pandemic, George also said that Circle Media is proud to continue entertainment safely during this time. “We are doing a live Opry performance every Saturday night – even without audiences – during the COVID restrictions — to keep the almost 95-year tradition of the Opry going!” During this current global pandemic, the Grand Ole Opry has worked closely with Nashville’s Director of Health to bring the show live to millions around the world while following strict safety protocols under the guidance of local health professionals. The Opry, with the help of its membership and wider artist and industry community, continues to bring millions of fans around the world together to keep the music playing without an Opry House audience in attendance. Embracing today’s technology, the Opry will be broadcast and streamed with a small production team for the time being. Under these conditions, Circle Media and the Grand Ole Opry aired its annual pre- Memorial Day Salute the Troops Opry performance Saturday, May 23, with Craig Morgan, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Kellie Pickler, with the Opry paying special tribute to the essential workers who are on the frontline against the war on COVID-19. Those tuning into the Livestream on the Circle All Access YouTube and Facebook channels also saw a special Memorial Day Weekend episode of “Circle Sessions with Craig Morgan,” who is an Opry member, TV host and Army Veteran who paid tribute to his past and his future with his new album, God, Family, Country, released May 22 on Broken Bow Records. After the Opry Livestream, Circle was proud to premiere a special edition of “Circle Sessions: At Home” with various stars. .

  • Deana Carter Danny Myrick
Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Danny Myrick DANNY MYRICK is an award winning songwriter and musician based here in Nashville.

  • JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911-1963) Music Publisher
JAMES RAE “JIM” DENNY (1911•1963) Music publisher, booking agent, long•time manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and promoter of Nashville’s music industry, was born in Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, TN. As a young man, Denny found work as a mail clerk with the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, parent organization to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. With growing interest in country music, Denny was running the WSM Artists Service Bureau by 1946, booking Opry talent and other WSM acts. Denny eventually managed the Grand Ole Opry itself. Denny, along with his predecessor, Jack Stapp, is responsible for updating the face of the Opry. As promoters and developers of talent, they helped to transform the Opry from a popular barn dance to a showcase of country superstars, ensuring its growth and long•term success. During their tenure, the cast grew enormously, most major stars became Opry members, and an Opry appearance became a must goal for many performers. In 1954 Denny and Opry star Webb Pierce formed Cedarwood Publishing Company, for a time the most important publishing house in Nashville. Driftwood Music, a companion firm, was a partnership between Denny and Carl Smith, another Opry star. These business interests led to conflict of interest allegations by WSM and eventually Denny’s dismissal. With his knowledge of WSM operations, Denny achieved immediate success as a booking agent. The Jim Denny Bureau served most of the artists Denny had signed while at the Opry. Billboard magazine estimated that, by 1961, the bureau was handling over 3,300 personal appearances worldwide.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.
