In Argentine ant-free sites, most of Myrmarachne exhibited all-blackish colouration. In Argentine ant-infested sites, on the other hand, blackish morph de- creased, and bicoloured (i.e. partly bright-coloured) morphs increased in dominance. Invasive Argentine ant drives away native blackish ants. Disappearance of blackish model ants supposedly led to malfunction of Batesian mimicry of Myrmarachne. Introduction It has attracted attention of biologists that many arthropods morphologically and/or behaviorally resemble ants [1]-[4]. Resemblance of non-ant arthropods to aggressive and/or unpalatable ants is called myrmecomorphy (ant-mimicry). Especially, spider myrmecomorphy has been described through many literatures [5]-[9]. Myr- mecomorphy is considered to be an example of Batesian mimicry gaining protection from predators. -

Insect migrations involve millions of individuals and are often spectacular. However, in general, virtually nothing is known about their structure. With anthropogenically induced global change, we risk losing most of these migrations before they are even described. We used stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) measurements of wings of seven species of butterflies (Libytheana carinenta, Danaus gilippus, Phoebis sennae, Asterocampa leilia, Euptoieta claudia, Euptoieta hegesia, and Zerene cesonia) salvaged as roadkill when migrating in fall through a narrow bottleneck in northeast Mexico. These data were used to depict the probabilistic origins in North America of six species, excluding the largely local E. hegesia. We determined evidence for long-distance migration in four species (L. carinenta, E. claudia, D. glippus, Z. cesonia) and present evidence for panmixia (Z. cesonia), chain (Libytheana Citation: Hobson, K.A.; Kusack, J.W.; Mora-Alvarez, B.X. Arthropods of Elm Fork Preserve Arthropods are characterized by having jointed limbs and exoskeletons. They include a diverse assortment of creatures: Insects, spiders, crustaceans (crayfish, crabs, pill bugs), centipedes and millipedes among others. Column Headings Scientific Name: The phenomenal diversity of arthropods, creates numerous difficulties in the determination of species. Positive identification is often achieved only by specialists using obscure monographs to ‘key out’ a species by examining microscopic differences in anatomy. For our purposes in this survey of the fauna, classification at a lower level of resolution still yields valuable information. For instance, knowing that ant lions belong to the Family, Myrmeleontidae, allows us to quickly look them up on the Internet and be confident we are not being fooled by a common name that may also apply to some other, unrelated something. With the Family name firmly in hand, we may explore the natural history of ant lions without needing to know exactly which species we are viewing. In some instances identification is only readily available at an even higher ranking such as Class. Millipedes are in the Class Diplopoda. There are many Orders (O) of millipedes and they are not easily differentiated so this entry is best left at the rank of Class. A great deal of taxonomic reorganization has been occurring lately with advances in DNA analysis pointing out underlying connections and differences that were previously unrealized. For this reason, all other rankings aside from Family, Genus and Species have been omitted from the interior of the tables since many of these ranks are in a state of flux. -

Schaefer Abstract The broad-headed bugs (Alydidae) are divided into two subfamilies, Alydinaeand Micrelytrinae, each divided into two tribes, Daclerini and Alydini, and Micrelytriniand Leptocorisini, respectively, The farnily has 53 genera and about 250 specieins; the Neotropics, there are 21 genera. Alydids are small (8-20 mm), slen- Itr,with a triangular head; nymphs of alydines mimic ants, the adults of some Micrelytrinialso rnirnic ants. The most studied species in the Neotropics is the aly- dineNeomegalotomus parvus (Westwood), usually associated with legumes, and maybe a pest on soybean. Other common genera include Hyalymenus Amyot & Serville,Stenocoris Burmeister, Cydamus Stâl, and Trachelium Herrich-Schâffer. Studieson taxonomy and bioecology on alydids of the Neotropics are needed. 18.1 Introduction AlydidaeAmyot and Serville, 1843, were treated as a subfarnily of the farnily Coreidaeand even as a tribe (Schaffner 1964); now it has been treated as a farnily, ~ether with Coreidae, Rhopalidae, Hyocephalidae, and Stenocephalidae, in the !UperfarniCoreoidealy (Schaefer 1964). Thisfarnily contains 53 genera and approximately 250 species, mostly tropical Irsubtropical,in all regions of the world. There are only two genera that span both dleOldand the New World, Alydus and Megalotomus. These genera are Holarctic, IInAlydus extends from Alaska through Canada into Mexico (Brailovsky and Flores 1979;Froeschner 1988; Maw et al. 2000). Se registran 12 de Papilionidae y 27 especies de Pieridae, de las cuales 4 y 15 respectivamente son nuevos registros para el estado. -

Box 1429, Palatka, FL 32177 [email protected] Maria Minno Eco-Cognizant, Inc., 600 NW 35th Terrace, Gainesville, FL 32607 [email protected] ABSTRACT The Arogos skipper is a rare and declining butterfly found in native grassland habitats in the eastern and mid- western United States. Five distinct populations of the butterfly occur in specific parts of the range. Atrytone arogos arogos once occurred from southern South Carolina through eastern Georgia and peninsular Florida as far south as Miami. This butterfly is currently thought to be extirpated from South Carolina and Georgia. The six known sites in Florida for A. arogos arogos are public lands with dry prairie or longleaf pine savanna having an abundance of the larval host grass, Sorghastrum secundum. Colonies of the butterfly are threat- ened by catastrophic events such as wild fires, land management activities or no management, and the loss of genetic integrity. The dry prairie preserves of central Florida will be especially important to the recovery of the butterfly, since these are some of the largest and last remaining grasslands in the state. It may be possible to create new colonies of the Arogos skipper by releasing wild-caught females or captive-bred individuals into currently unoccupied areas of high quality habitat. INTRODUCCION Los Coreoidea son representados en Nicaragua por solo tres familias: Coreidae, Alydidae y Rhopalidae. Son en general fitófagos y a veces de importancia económica, atacando algunos cultivos. Morfológicamente pueden identificarse por presentar los siguientes caracteres: antenas de 4 segmentos, presencia de ocelos, labio de 4 segmentos, membrana de las alas anteriores con numerosas venas. Los Coreidae se caracterizan por un tamaño mediano a grande, en general mayor de un centímetro. Los fémures posteriores son a veces engrosados y las tibias posteriores a veces parecen pedazos de hojas, de donde deriva el nombre común en Nicaragua "chinches patas de hojas". Los Alydidae son alargados, delgados, con cabeza ancha y las ninfas ocasionalmente son miméticas de hormigas. Son especies de tamaño mediano, generalmente mayor de un centímetro. Los Rhopalidae son chinches pequeñas, muchas veces menores de un centímetro y con la membrana habitualmente con venación reducida. -

Females have a narrow black border on the wings and a dark spot in the middle of the front wing. Males are season- ally dimorphic with winter forms being larger and with darker markings ventrally (Opler and Krizek 1984). Eggs The eggs are cream colored when laid but later turn to orange.
