  • Blackbird Case Study NRL Copy
CASE STUDY Australian National Rugby League turns to Blackbird to drive brand reach, engagement and monetization Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) is the most viewed and attended rugby league club competition in the world. 16 professional men’s rugby teams, including the enormously popular Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos, compete annually for the prestigious Telstra Premiership title. With the phasing out of SnappyTV, the NRL sought an alternative cloud video editing platform that could continue to significantly build the sport’s brand and reach by delivering engaging content to multiple platforms faster than any other solution on the market. After extensive research into available systems, the NRL chose Blackbird. Every weekend, live streams of the 8 games are run through the Microsoft Azure cloud from the NRL’s content partners’ production locations. Based in Sydney, the NRL’s digital team use Blackbird to rapidly clip, edit and publish highlights during and post-match to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Clips can be delivered to social platforms within 30 seconds – with emojis added and players and sponsors tagged for further engagement and reach. Idents, overlaid stills and animations and sponsor logos are easily added with geo and playback restrictions implemented to support international rights control. www.blackbird.video CONTINUED 800,000 fans globally with an NRL Watch account can enjoy premium video on-demand (VOD) content consisting of longer form match highlights, player interviews and behind the scenes content – all edited in Blackbird. With a cumulative TV audience of 116 million and over 2.9 million <30 Seconds fans regularly engaging with the sport on social media, the NRL clip from live game to social exceeded Australian Rules Football in popularity last year for the first time since 2010, boasting revenues of over $500m.

As tempest rages, questions cloud air ANNE DAVIES and MALCOLM KNOX | The Sydney Morning Herald | April 24, 2010 We still don't know how far the subterfuge went, write Anne Davies and Malcolm Knox. As the initial shock of the Storm's abrupt demotion from the competition subsides, the question of who knew will quickly be replaced with another question: who should have known? In the early phases of this latest crisis in rugby league, the name of the game is to blame a few wayward executives. The chief executive of News Ltd, John Hartigan, called it ''a couple of rats in the ranks'', naming the former Storm chief executive, Brian Waldron, as the ''architect of the whole shooting match''. David Gallop, the chief executive of the NRL, backed Hartigan's assessment. But Waldron, who has now gone to ground, has claimed ''there were people on the board who knew about everything that was going on'', arguing that the Storm was merely following a widespread practice in the league of topping up salaries. In the case of the Canterbury Bulldogs, whose salary cap infractions were exposed by the Herald in 2002, the entire board of the football club and some of the Leagues Club board were aware that players' salaries were being topped up. They even noted the top-ups in board minutes. What some directors may not have known was how the extra payments were being funnelled to players. The most egregious of these were promotional payments to the players from the Oasis development, a massive casino-style club being undertaken by the Leagues Club with Liverpool Council.

  • Kick Impact Characteristics for Different Rugby League Kicks
KICK IMPACT CHARACTERISTICS FOR DIFFERENT RUGBY LEAGUE KICKS Kevin Ball School of Sport and Exercise Science, Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia Kicking is becoming increasingly important in rugby league and one of the most important aspects of kicking is the nature of impact. This study examined impact characteristics for five rugby league kicks – the goalshot, the punt kick, the dropkick, the grubber and the ‘bomb’. Seven elite players performed these kicks while being videoed (6000Hz). Digitised data of nine points (five on the kick leg, four on the ball) were used to quantify parameters near and during impact. Rugby league kicks produced a smaller time in contact and a larger amount of work compared to kicks in other sports. Differences also existed between the five types of rugby league kick tested in terms of ball to foot ratio and foot and ball positioning at impact. These differences between kicks within the same sport highlight the need to evaluate different kick types separately within a sport. KEYWORDS: Ball to foot, Drop kick, Goalshot, INTRODUCTION: Kicking has become increasingly important in rugby league. Where once the kick was used to get out of defense and attacking kicks were predominantly ‘bombs’ (a high trajectory into the attacking scoring zone that gave attacking players time to get under it) recent years has seen the emergence of more precise kicks to wide receivers across the ground. The kicking game of National Rugby League team the Melbourne Storm is considered to be a key reason for their success in gaining four grand finals in a row and in 2007, more than a third of their tries were scored from kicks (Ball, 2007).

Matthew Lodge free to play as footage surfaces of US rampage smh.com.au/algo.html March 2, 2018 Matthew Lodge remains free to make his NRL comeback despite the emergence of shocking CCTV footage of his drunken New York rampage yesterday. Lodge is expected to make his debut for Brisbane in the NRL’s season-opening game against St George Illawarra at Jubilee Oval on Thursday night. It will be his first appearance in the top grade since June 28, 2016. Footage of the incidents, released to television outlets on Friday, shows Lodge attacking New York resident Joseph Cartright, who had come to the assistance of two women the former Wests Tigers prop accosted. Lodge is seen bearhugging Cartright before punching him in the head with a vicious right hook. Lodge follows up with a series of wild haymakers. The Broncos are standing by their previous statements on Lodge and a club spokesman said they were limited by the fact there was an ongoing civil matter, which could yet end up before an Australian court. It is believed club officials are under the impression he had reached out to his victims via correspondence two years ago to apologise. The couple’s lawyer Renan Varghese said neither he nor the victims had seen anything of the sort. Advertisement Speaking to Fairfax Media in August of 2016, Lodge said: "I’ve written a letter and apologised. What happened wasn’t really me and I assured them that nothing like that will ever happen again, from my part to them or anyone else.
