  • Tony Abbott 'Thumbing His Nose' at Voters, Says Laurie Oakes Date November 6, 2013
Tony Abbott 'thumbing his nose' at voters, says Laurie Oakes Date November 6, 2013 Tom McIlroy Reporter at The Canberra Times Canberra press gallery veteran Laurie Oakes says the Abbott government is "thumbing its nose at voters" through a lack of transparency and communication. You can’t thumb your nose at the voters’ right to know and you can’t arrogantly say ‘we’ll let the voters be misinformed and we won’t help journalists get it right'. That’s just a disgusting attitude. The respected Channel Nine reporter and political commentator told Fairfax Media that Prime Minister Tony Abbott and senior ministers were breaking their election promise of greater accountability for voters. "They’re busily trying to avoid the media as much as possible and to control the media and so far they’re getting away with it but I don’t think they will get away with it for too long," he said ahead of the release of his new book Remarkable Times: Australian Politics 2010-13. "You can see the way the story of the expenses rorts is gathering speed, and that horse bolted because Tony Abbott and his Special Minister of State Michael Ronaldson didn’t move to nip it in the bud. "They could have killed it off but they’ve got this attitude of not feeding the news cycle so it got away from them." The criticism follows disquiet from journalists and commentators at the lack of access to Mr Abbott and senior ministers including Attorney-General George Brandis and Treasurer Joe Hockey. Mr Oakes said the government should learn from the experience of British Prime Minister David Cameron, who sought to control media reporting more tightly after his 2010 election, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

  • Press Release the Hon
PRESS RELEASE THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MP, LEADER OF THE FEDERAL COALITION A TEAM TO BUILD A STRONGER AUSTRALIA The incoming Coalition Government will restore strong, stable and accountable government to build a more prosperous Australia. This is the team that will scrap the carbon tax, end the waste, stop the boats, build the roads of the twenty first century and deliver the strong and dynamic economy that we need. First term governments are best served by Cabinets with extensive ministerial experience. Fifteen members of the incoming Cabinet have previous ministerial experience. The four members of Cabinet without ministerial experience have made significant contributions to the Shadow Ministry. The simplification of ministerial and departmental titles reflects my determination to run a “back to basics” government. The Australian people expect a government that is upfront, speaks plainly and does the essentials well. The Cabinet will be assisted by a strong team of ministers with proven capacity to implement the Government’s policies. Parliamentary secretaries will assist senior ministers and be under their direction. Good government requires a strong Coalition. As Deputy Prime Minister and as Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Hon Warren Truss MP will be responsible for ensuring the Government delivers on its major infrastructure commitments across Australia. Mr Jamie Briggs MP will be the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development with specific responsibility for roads and delivery of our election commitments across metropolitan and regional Australia. The Hon Julie Bishop MP will serve as Minister for Foreign Affairs and will be a strong voice for Australia during a time when Australia is a member of the United Nations Security Council.

  • War Memorial? the Case of the Australian Ex-Pows Memorial
What makes a ‘National’ War Memorial? The Case of the Australian Ex-POWs Memorial LACHLAN GRANT Public History Review, vol 12, 2006, pp92-102 ar memorials play an intricate role in forming Australian national identity. As public monuments in remembrance of a generation lost, W their importance to the social fabric is the centrality they play to rituals and ceremonies that mark formal aspects of one of Australia’s most important national days.1 War memorials represent the biggest communal arts project ever attempted. They seldom attract attention because they are so common amidst the urban landscape.2 War memorials within Australia represent both individual communities, within the towns and suburbs, and the nation, within the major monuments in the national and each state capitol. How, then, can a war memorial within a local community be considered a national memorial? Why does a war memorial need ‘national’ status and how is this legitimised? These issues confronted Ballarat’s Australian Ex-POWs (POWs) Memorial and revealed how government bureaucracy and party politics can influence the future and potential public significance of a war memorial. Initially, I thought that the issues confronting the Australian Ex-POWs Memorial were related to place of POWs within Australian national history and the difficulties of incorporating the POWs experience within the Anzac legend.3 Such difficulties had been inherent in the memorial’s design which incorporated both modernist and traditional approaches to memorial architecture that highlight the tension between the ex-prisoners’ stories and their place in the Anzac tradition. On one hand the modernist element in the design highlighted their differences.
